Heads Up Be Aware There Is No Currency Insurance Available For Sales Values Above $20.00 Thru eBay
Appears most currency sellers are unaware of the risk they are taking selling any kind of currency over $20.00 here on eBay BECAUSE shipping with anything but Registered Mail which is not available thru eBay leaves only the eBay Standard Envelope available with the MAX CLAIM PAYOUT of only $20.00 per item.
Been here for 25+ years with about 7,000 sales and maintain 100% positive feedback. Have sold a number of antique coins here in the past only to find out recently after selling a 1922 US silver dollar that sold at auction for $54.00 (had toning starting), shipped USPS Ground Advantage with $54.00 insurance thru USPS and then lost by USPS that per USPS rules/policies max amount they will pay for the claim filed is only $15.00.
The eBay Standard Envelope does allow up to $20.00 insurance on a single item and up to $50.00 on combined orders but, NO SINGLE ITEM CAN BE VALUED OVER $20.00 AND THERE ARE SIZE RESTRITIONS WITH A TOTAL WEIGHT LIMIT OF JUST 3 oz. If a buyer's combined purchases push the total order value over $50.00 or contain items individually worth more than $20.00, you have to use a different USPS shipping service and the ONLY option available WITH INSURANCE for values above $20.00 is REGISTERED MAIL which is NOT AVAILABLE here at eBay.
USPS: 4.0 Claims 4.1 Payable Claim - m. EXCEPT for REGISTERED MAIL the MAXIMUM INDEMNITY for negotiable items (defined as instruments that can be converted to cash without resort to forgery), CURRENCY, or BULLION is ONLY $15.00. On eBay's label page when you add Additional liability coverage if you read the rates and exclusions found on the link provided you can find 4.0, 4.1 and m.
FedEx: Does have a high-value jewelry shipping program but, COINS and GOLD BARS are EXCLUDED. On eBay's label page when you try add Additional liability coverage a WARNING says "Package contents are not eligible for additional insurance".
UPS: PROHIBITED ITEMS includes BANK BILLS, NOTES or CURRENCY. On eBay's label page when you try add Additional liability coverage a WARNING says "Package contents are not eligible for additional insurance".
ShipCover (available option at eBay label page for some sales) Insurance disclosures page II. THE INSURANCE DOES NOT INSURE: A. COINS, BULLION, loose diamonds or stones, stocks, bonds, CURRENCY, deeds, evidences of debt, travelers checks, money orders, gift certificates, gift cards, calling cards, lottery tickets, admission tickets, or any other negotiable documents.
SO HERE AT EBAY'S SHIPPING LABEL PAGE NO CURRENCY INSURANCE FOR SOLD ITEMS WITH VALUES ABOVE $20.00 IS EVEN AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE.
THE ONLY WAY TO INSURE ANY CURRENCY VALUED OVER $20.00 FOR SHIPPING IS WITH Registered Mail WHICH IS NOT AVAILABLE THRU eBay AND, NEEDS PROPER AMOUNT OF INSURANCE PURCHASED.
ANY USPS SERVICE USED HERE AT eBay EVEN WITH PAYING EXTRA FOR THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OF INSURANCE IF IT GETS LOST IN TRANSIT THE MAX PAYOUT IS ONLY $15.00.
I see thousands of listings here for antique coins up to $3,500.00 and almost all list the shipping as USPS Ground Advantage, a few list with USPS Priority Mail services (also $15.00 max for claim payouts by USPS) and a very rare few who do ship Registered Mail. Registered Mail costs much more, requires special packing and has to be done at a USPS post office.
One listing says > FREE SECURE USPS INSURED SHIPPING! Free USPS Ground Advantage - Item is a > 1822 Antique 90% Silver Capped Bust Half Dollar Coin US $650.00 or Best Offer. If sells for $600.00 and ships USPS Ground Advantage with $600.00 insurance and USPS loses it the max payout is only going to be $15.00.
Stay well versed, up to date and safe out there fellow sellers.

·4 months agoIf you deal in jewelry, coins, and bullion, you should buy a blanket insurance policy from Lloyd's of London or another insurance company that specializes in collectibles. It's not as expensive as you might think.

OP4 months agoYes you can use USPS certified mail but it can also get lost (and they do). If lost before arriving for signing and you shipped a $2,900.00 coin with insurance certified mail because it was not Registered Mail the max claim payout is still going to be just $15.00. Very risky.
Not sure what you are getting at with free shipping with built in costs. If coin is worth hundreds to thousands of dollars and the only way to insure for full value is Registered Mail and this is not available at the eBay site if it gets lost the max claim payout is still just $15.00? Again there is no option at all at eBay to insure currency for more than $20.00. Very risky.
$20.00 and under doesn't always need tracking. To be fully protected from fraudulent "Not Received" claims, sellers must use tracking. 25 years ago this may have been a option but today with all the scammers? Very risky.
Again, the only shipper that even allows full value currency insurance is USPS and requires it be shipped Registered Mail with proper amount of insurance.
Thanks

·4 months agoThere are other insurance exclusions which many Ebay sellers are unaware of, until they are faced with a product which is lost or damaged.
Fortunately, the actual rate of loss or damage by carriers is low.

Correct, which as noted is how I found out about currency insurance.
As noted the actual rate of lost or damage has been quite low but appears to be picking up with all 3 big carriers (I have used them all).
Thanks

·4 months agoYou can do certified mail USPS.
You can do free shipping as well where cost is built into item for sale or auction.
And anything under $20. doesn't always need tracking
