Freight Forwarder Loophole is Killing the eBay Platform (A Formal Case for Reform)
Fellow Sellers,
I am posting this today because we are at a breaking point. The current "Strategic Ambiguity" regarding 3rd Party Freight Forwarders is not just a seller problem—it is a platform-ending risk that is driving our best inventory and our future customers straight to Amazon.
Below is the Formal Policy Grievance I am submitting to eBay Executive Leadership. I am sharing it here to gather your feedback and to document the systemic failures we are all facing.
THE "PLATFORM EROSION" REPORT: 2026
RE: Mandatory Reform for 3rd Party Freight Forwarder Protections
1. The "Support Roulette" & The Admission Paradox
We are currently operating in a "Support Roulette" environment. If you call eBay 10 times, you get 10 different answers.
The Contradiction: Some agents demand a "Buyer Admission" before voiding the Money Back Guarantee (MBG), while other agents correctly admit that logistical facts (delivery to a known hub) should be enough. This inconsistency coaches scammers to stay silent while sellers are left holding the bag.
2. The "New Seller Meat Grinder" & Feedback Ransom
International predators are using automated tools to target sellers listing high-value electronics (Apple, cell phones).
The Trap: They swoop in using a 3rd Party Freight Forwarder to bypass shipping exclusions.
The Ransom: While veterans spot the red flags, we are often trapped by feedback extortion. If we don't succumb to unauthorized partial refund demands, we face a negative feedback hit that eBay refuses to remove under current ambiguous rules.
3. The "One and Done" Effect: The Amazon Migration
When a seller—especially a new one—loses an expensive item to an international scammer through a freight forwarder, they don’t just leave the deal; they leave the eBay platform. They move to Amazon as both a seller and a buyer. eBay is effectively gifting its lifetime user value to its biggest competitor.
4. The USPS "Black Hole"
Logistical reality has changed. The USPS has restricted tracking services and "Help Requests" for commercial 3rd Party Freight Forwarder hubs. If the national carrier recognizes these hubs as "restricted," eBay must follow suit. Liability must terminate at the 3rd Party Freight Forwarder.
5. The "Double-Dipping" Fee Hypocrisy
eBay has no problem identifying a buyer as international when it’s time to collect the International Transaction Fee, yet they deny us the tools to block those same buyers based on their registration country. You cannot charge us for an international risk while simultaneously telling us that risk doesn't exist for protection purposes.
THE DEMAND FOR CHANGE
We are demanding that eBay implement the following Logistical Integrity Features immediately:
Defect-Free Cancellation: A hard-coded "3rd Party Freight Forwarder" reason with zero defects and auto-feedback removal.
Automated MBG Voiding: A registry of known hubs that automatically voids MBG protection upon domestic delivery.
Registration-Based Blocking: If we are charged an international fee, we must have the right to block that registration and receive automatic immunity from SNAD claims.
Carrier Support Parity: Automatic closure of "Item Not Received" cases once a package hits a verified 3rd Party hub.
Fellow Sellers: How many of you have spoken to multiple agents and been told you were "unprotected" unless the buyer admitted to forwarding in a message? How many of you have been "swooped" on by a Doral, FL or Wilmington, DE address on a high-value item?

·7 months agoThere is a high risk associated with buying or selling iPhones and other big ticket electronic items online.
There is a higher risk associated with buying iPhones or items on Ebay because Ebay does not require manufacturer authorization or a manufacturer's warranty in effect from its sellers.
There is no exclusion from buyer protections for shipments on other sites like Amazon for shipments to freight forwarders.
Ebay and Amazon have made different decisions. Selling these products online is high risk, Buying these products online is high risk. Your desire for greater protection is understandable, but your solution need not be seen as desirable by Ebay and your statement of risks to Ebay may be wrong and exaggerated. Ebay does not lose many of these sellers because they could not qualify to sell these items on Amazon or Walmart.
I would not buy smartphones online from anyone other than a manufacturer authorized reseller who was required to be one by the site. I will no longer sell electronics online because it is too high risk for a low volume seller.
You are in a high risk business, and it will continue to be a high risk business no matter where you choose to sell online.

·7 months agoI've not had any issues with the freight forwarders. But you might be taken more seriously if you cut down on the hyperbole.
If ebay isn't cutting it for you, maybe start your own platform with all of the ideals you desire.

·7 months agoLots of hyperbole in your preamble. Platform ending risk????
I've shipped numerous items including high value items to freight forwarders. Never had a problem to this point (knock on wood). I am on the look out for anything that goes to "Doral" or "Wilmington". The vast majority of my freight forwarding addresses have been in Oregon.
Not saying there aren't potential problems but as with any online selling platform there are always some risks.

·7 months agoYour reply gives excellent advice; however, just curious, why would you have a problem with Doral (FL) or Wilmington (DE) that you do not have with a freight forwarder in Oregon?
Freight forwarders choose those locations because they're located in states that do not impose a state sales tax. The ones in the eastern US usually ship to European locations and those in Oregon ship to Asian locations, generally speaking.

There is a known issue with the zip code in Doral. Something to the effect that items sent to one zip code end up being delivered to another zip code and thus no delivery confirmation. (that's how I remember the issue)
Have also heard (no personal experience) of a number of scammers shipping through Wilmington.
