You didn't state the carrier but will assume it is USPS. It is actually easier for the receiver to file the claim with USPS but most don't know how to do so and it falls to the seller. You should go ahead and refund the buyer but as others said have them hold onto the package. If you can get their cooperation you may get USPS to reimburse you for the item. I have filed a few damage claims with USPS and the only ones I was able to get approved were those where I had the buyers assistance.
When the buyer takes the item into USPS for inspection if the PO approves the claim they will likely keep the item and the packing or offer a partial refund to fix the item and allow the receiver to keep the item.
As noted in the other post, you should ask the buyer to hold onto the entire package in case their PO wants to look at it as part of the claim process.
on the usps website. Know that the buyer may be required to 'show' the package to a postal inspector and they cannot ship it to you. If buyer doesn't want to do that- that's your problem, too bad but you must refund them.
Ask the buyer for a few pictures of the item and package, then refund the buyer. Have the buyer hang on to the item and package so it can be inspected. You file a claim with the carrier on their web site.

·1 year agoyou can file if you want but it is almost for sure a waste of time.
The last one I filed arrived to the buyer with a USPS sticker on it saying that they caused the damage.... denied claim.
