Fedex, and UPS are integrated shippers with porch pirates.
Porch pirates pirates follow Fedex, and UPS trucks because they deliver mostly packages. That's the most organized way for porch pirates to operate. That's the business model of porch pirates other than random opportunistic theft. I've had a much higher percentage of missing packages stolen minutes after receiving the delivery notification from Fedex, and UPS.
USPS delivers mostly mail, and some packages. Following them isn't practical because the pirates don't know what they are delivering without more, or insider information. Insider information thefts can happen with Fedex, and UPS too. I've had a smaller percentage of packages missing when shipped by USPS than from Fedex, and UPS. I live in one of the highest crime neighborhoods on Earth, and there is opportunistic theft here even of groceries left on the porch for minutes. Especially in the spring, and summer as homeless criminals get released more then because the authorities have gotten criticism for releasing homeless prisoners in the winter. But even then a higher percentage of thefts are of Fedex, and UPS deliveries.
I don't buy from sellers using Fedex, and UPS any more. I don't use them for my selling either.
Ebay could proactively stop using Fedex, and UPS as integrated shippers. Fedex, and UPS could proactively put trackers on bait packages, and follow them with security forces randomly, and in areas where there is a high incidence theft. They could even just advertise they do even if they don't. It might help.
But the only proactive activity I see is youtube doorbell cams showing the extreme hazard of porch piracy with conflict with criminals, illegal, and dangerous explosive boobytraps, and glitter bombs. But no activity at all from businesses whos business model is founded on shipping.

Ask shipper to add signature required at your expense.
Follow carrier's real time map tracking and sit on the porch when the truck gets close.
Have all packages held for pickup at the carrier's terminal.
Rent a box and have all packages delivered to a retail pack/ship store for pickup.

OP2 years agoThere's a lot of misunderstanding here. I pointed out the ring cam videos as representing bad solutions. Confronting organized criminals is a bad idea. USPS, and high crime neighborhood is not the problem. UPS, and fedex are. Porch pirates follow them in high crime, and low crime neighborhoods because they only carry packages. There are a lot of other ways they are exploited but I won't turn this into a primer on how to be a porch pirate.

I got an email saying within a 2 hour window when item will be delivered after I knew it was out for delivery.
The tracking is FREE. Just sign in to get email updates.
Plus he always rings my doorbell.
I get FedEx packages all the time. There is email updates daily.
USPS and UPS have a key into our building for leaving packages
Amazon is the one who throws packages on our porch. LOL

·2 years agoBottom line is; It is NOT the responsibility of the shipper for YOU to have a secure location for the packages to be delivered to, that is YOUR responsibility. If you know you live in a high crime area, then it is YOUR responsibility to address the situation, not the shipper.

If this described my home, I would either install a package delivery box or lease a personal mailbox at a delivery location (e.g., UPS Store).

·2 years agoRing cameras work as well as signage to go with it. If you get packages shipped via USPS, you always can put a hold on your mail to pick up in person at USPS. If you are getting something of value shipped to you, take the time to set up a safe place for delivery. (Work, PO Box, Mail Box Ect. Retail Pickup) Get to know your couriers and ask them if they have any suggestions to help. (Lock boxes outside your door or hidden spaces)
It is not Ebay's or any Shipping Company's responsibility to make sure your address is a safe location to ship to. If you want to have items shipped to your address, either make it as safe as you can or decide if its better to buy locally without the hassle and stress. YMMV
