eBay used wrong shipping weight
I sold an item. The item weighed by itself, before even boxing and packing, 5 pounds. The shipping label eBay provided, showed a weight of 1 pound 13 oz. But I boxed and took to the PO anyway. The PO would not accept the package because it weighed so much more than the label specified. I've tried everything to contact eBay with no luck. I just keep being shown topics to choose from, which none apply. I've tried the chat feature, but just keep being asked to pick a topic, which doesn't apply. I keep explaining the problem anyway, but just immediately am shown topics to pick from which have no relevance. I've chosen to refund buyer, but the amount eBay shows to credit me is short because it's deducting the label I paid for. How do I resolve this?

·1 year agoYou probably should check the shipping information on the items you have listed to be sure the correct weights/dimensions are entered.

·1 year agoWhen you go to print the label, always note the size and weight the comes up. Make the proper changes at that time. Sometimes I need to use a different box then I originally planned for, I make that box size change at that moment before printing the label. If you knew the weight was at least 5 lb, but saw 1 lb 13 oz you needed to change it. Doesn't matter how the default reads.
Cancel the label, and print a corrected label, as other have said You will also never be notified of the credit from USPS, so you need to look for it. It can take up to a month or so. USPS wants to make sure the label is not in use at all.

There is a redundancy built in, so you have one more opportunity to double check weight & dims for accuracy.
Apparently when you set up the original listing you didn't fill out the shipping section. You went with whatever auto-populated that field. You had a second chance to correct it as the previous poster opined.
Always double check every bit of info on your listing prior to going live. You will find "helpful" auto-population of fields in shipping method/cost, item cost et al. Often way way off the mark.
Lesson learned. We all learn them one way or another.

·1 year agoWhen you list an item for sale, you need to check and double check the listing.
It is stated in the listing that the seller is responsible for the listing information.
You should cancel the label and purchase a label with the correct dimensions and weight.
Then you should ship the item to the buyer.
As a new seller there are many things to learn and some have a cost with them but they are the ones you will not do a 2nd time.

@nobody*s_perfect lays it out for you. You will be refunded your original label cost but it will take some time for the credit to appear. I think the last cancel/refund i did took a few weeks but it was years ago. YMMV
It would also be good to let them buyer know your mistake and possible delay in getting their purchase. Especially this time of the year, keep them posted for good customer service. IMHO
-Good luck

OP1 year agoI let the buyer know and told her to request a refund, which she did. But my refund eBay shows doesn't include the shipping label cost. I've been unable to let eBay know that they sent an incorrect label, so why would they ever refund that cost? So I've never clicked the button to allow the refund.

·1 year agoNo, that is not what everyone is telling you to do. You can go to the Shipping labels page under Orders in your Seller hub find the order. Next to it is a drop down menu where you can Cancel or void a label. It takes up to 3 weeks to see the refund for a label cancellation. You didn't have to cancel the sale, just the label to repurchase a label with the correct weight.
eBay didn't send you an incorrect label.YOU incorrectly weighed and measured your item.

OP1 year agoI did NOT weigh and measure my item. It is a commonly sold item, so eBay already had that info. I was never asked for it, they just issued a label with the incorrect weight.

·1 year agoOnce again.
1. the "auto-populated" info is a suggestion not an obligation. By going live with it you accepted it.
2. You asked for it by pushing the "print label now" button on the screen
3. As such, "they" did not issue a thing. You selected it.
I agree, auto-populated fields are confusing and frustrating but not unnavigable. At the end of the day as the seller, going live means standing by all the info in the listing, whether you verified it or not.
Best of luck with shop and sales.

·1 year agoEbay doesn't know what size box you'll use or how much the final weight will be.
You need that information before listing the item so you can enter the correct information in the listing.
Before buying your labels, you can update that information so you get the correct label.

·1 year agoYou used eBay's estimate and it was wrong. In the future, input your own, accurate information about package weight and dimensions rather than relying on eBay's estimates which are inaccurate as you have seen.

@Anonymous
Correct... eBay didn't send an incorrect label, they sent the label you requested/bought. The refund comes from USPS.

OP1 year agoYes, but eBay set the weight for the label without any input from me. Are you saying that if I take the label to the PO they'll give me my money for it?

·1 year agoI'm lost here. eBay has no idea what your item weighs.
Best guess is that you entered the wrong weight when creating the listing. OR, a weight that was in somebody else's listing remained when you copied it.
Either way, it doesn't matter.
When you make a label, you set or change the weights and dimensions yourself, as you are making the label.
If that was done wrong? Just cancel the label and start again.

·1 year agoYou are responsible for setting up your listing, and also for checking the label preparation form to ensure that the package weight is correct. This is your error. Accept responsibility for it, and ship your item. And next time you set up a listing, pay close attention to the Shipping section of the listing form.
No, you cannot get money back from your local Post Office. You purchased the label online and you have to cancel it online.
