Ebay shipping prices MUCH HIGHER than actual USPS prices
Summary: wowitszak shared their experience with unexpectedly high shipping costs when using eBay, noting that they paid $38 to ship a package they expected to cost $13. They felt it was a mistake due to rushing and expressed frustration with the situation, questioning the viability of using eBay for future sales. Another participant, princ_9215, added their experience of being charged $108 for shipping by eBay, while the post office quoted $32, highlighting a similar issue with inflated shipping costs on the platform.
I listed a pair of used shoes, had all my shipping details correct(weight etc), and quoted a flat rate of 13$ for the buyer. Unfortunately, I wasn't paying attention when paying for the label because I ended up paying 38$ to ship a 1-3lb USPS priority mail package--which I have personally shipped for roughly 10$ several times. I assumed the 38$ was the money left over from deducting shipping funds because the sold price was around 50. Why did I pay this absolutely foolish price?? Have never once paid more than 15$ to ship anything of any size on eBay, and I wish I had focused when printing this label but I was rushing at that moment. Obviously, there's no way to get reimbursed for this and it's my fault for not being thorough but this leaves me with a rather poor feeling.... I will definitely not consider eBay before any other seller platform if this is what I gotta pay for convenient shipping

·3 days agoeBay just charged me $108 to ship something from Rockford Illinois to Dallas Texas and I asked the post office when they waited how much it should cost and they said $32 that's over $70 they overcharge me

·2 years agoYou were using a flat rate of $13 for anywhere in the US. It is a risk to use a flat rate rather than calculated shipping, especially for something a bit heavier such as shoes. I don't know if that was the problem in this case but it is a good idea to use calculated shipping with the total weight and dimensions of your package. That way someone in the next state will pay less than someone across the country.
Since your listing stated ‘standard shipping’ you could have used ground advantage instead of Priority.

Why are you shipping in such a large box? If your measurements are correct (as you claim they are), you're being correctly (sur)charged. 17" x 7" x 17" gets surcharged.

·2 years agoI find eBay's prices for USPS prices to be spot on with USPS commercial pricing on their website.
If your costs are turning up higher you might want to consider getting a new scale for weighing items and measuring device for dimensions, because something is off if you think eBay charges more.

·2 years agoHi @wowitszak
Review your listings, change to Calculated shipping not Flat rate. I know that coast to coast shipping can easily jump up from my own experience ...
You made a mistake somewhere, here are your sales for the last 90 days ... note the big difference in shipping costs ... $ 13 on the one and over $ 27 on the other. In most cases this is from operator error as @albertabrightalberta mentioned.

OP2 years agoIn this image, the previous listing(didnt go through btw) was eBay-provided shipping calculation. In the recent transaction(the one this post is about) I specifically set a price of $13. As far as the other concerns addressed it isn't accidentally expressed, I have the label its USPS priority mail as expected. The weight and dimensions are also as expected(attached). sent from Illinois to Washington state https://publuu.com/flip-book/451262/1017533

·2 years ago@wowitszak Consider changing to USPS Ground Advantage, it has $ 100 of built-in insurance and you can add more if needed, just like Priority Mail. Longer distant rates are lower than Priority Mail.

·2 years ago17 x17 x7 is what did it to you. You paid for dimensional weight .
fern*wood
·2 years agoIf that is true, you need to find a smaller box for your shoes.
mr_lincoln
·2 years ago@wowitszak
Actually, the "dimensions" are way too big for a pair of shoes. 17 x 17 x 17 =4913 cubic inches and carriers typically start Dimensional weight (now called Cubic rate by USPS) at 12 x 12 x 12 = 1728 cubic inches. So again, this is your mistake and your error and as mentioned in my post up thread, you need to check your listings and correct them.

·2 years agoAs was pointed out...if your shipping label was $38, you probably accidentally chose priority express.
Take a deep breath....ebay shipping label prices is one thing they do have pretty accurate....
Just void the label, and start over, choosing the right options (weight, size, service)
wowitszak
OP2 years agolittle late for the second option, its delivered and I don't rlly care for the hassle of a return even if that was viable. but I cannot identify any user error here the information on the label is correct as it should be, Ive shipped countless shoes and know what to expect from weight, price, and service. That price just doesn't make sense

It sounds like user error to me.
You either input the wrong weight, the wrong measurements of the package or the wrong service.
wowitszak
OP2 years agoto my knowledge and verifying info on the completed listing and label, none of this occurred.

·2 years agoIf your weight & dimensions were accurate, then did you select the correct service level? There is a big price difference between USPS Priority vs USPS Prirority Express.
wowitszak
OP2 years agoThe service is indeed priority mail. There is no wording of express on the label. The weight on the label is up to 3 lbs, and dimensions are fine as verified from label and countless previously shipped shoes.

·2 years agoUSPS charges a "dimensional weight" for packages that are over 1 cubic foot (i.e., 1728 cubic inches). Their formula for dimensional weight is volume (in cubic inches) divided by 166. If those dimensions are correct (i.e., 17 x 17 x 7 inches), then the postage rate would be based on a "dimensional weight" of 13 pounds rather than on the weight that shows on a scale.
The eBay price for a Priority Mail label for those dimensions would range from $12.67 to $45.00 depending on the recipient's location.

You can request to void the label if incorrect within 120 hours of purchase, then correct whatever caused the error.
label refund will take 2-3 weeks or longer.
$38 looks like possibly a Priority Mail Express rate.
wowitszak
OP2 years agoThe package's status is delivered so I don't believe that is an option. And yes I believe that is close to an express rate which is more baffling because this definitely was shipped through USPS priority mail and not any other service.

·2 years agoIt looks like based on the label you purchased you were charged the correct amount for a 17 X 7 X 17 package.
You were charged the DIM Weight Price not the 3 pound rate.
Is you box actually 17 X 7 X 17 or is there a typo? If you have been shipping this size box before it seems unlikely you could have shipped for $10 to $13.

OP2 years agoFrom all i'm looking at and verifying it must be an invisible one. although I did make the mistake of not paying close enough attention as mentioned in post, I rushed to print this label and didn't allow logic to kick in of why there was a 38$ number at all stated. rip
