eBay Shipping Overcharge: $179.43 for a Bubble Mailer Under 4 oz
Summary: magnetcountry is experiencing an issue with an overcharge on an eBay shipping label, where a cost of $5.40 was unexpectedly billed as $179.43. Despite contacting eBay multiple times with documentation, they haven't received a resolution. 1786davycrockett suggests contacting USPS, as they may be responsible for the overcharge, possibly due to a scanning error. babyers88 notes that any shipping adjustments should be visible in eBay messages, and ferncliff-39 recommends contacting eBay's Instagram team and checking eBay for shipping cost adjustments. magnetcountry mentions not receiving any notification email about the overcharge.
Hi everyone,
Has anyone experienced a similar issue with eBay and been able to get it resolved?
For my 6/14/26 sale, this was an item under 4 oz shipped in a bubble mailer. When I created the shipping label through eBay, the cost shown was $5.40. However, when I later checked my statement, I was charged $179.43 instead.
I’ve contacted eBay 4–5 times over the past 4 months and provided all requested documentation. I was told it was a glitch related to USPS rate changes, but I’m still waiting for the credit.
I contacted ebay again today (10/2/26), and they confirmed the issue had already been escalated and advised me to contact eBay again.
Is there someone at eBay who can review this case and help resolve it?
Thank you!

How are you contacting eBay exactly - have you tried the Instagram team yet:
https://www.instagram.com/ebayforsellers/
What does your account show for "shipping cost adjustments" here:
https://www.ebay.com/ship/lmng
If it's there, there should be a link/instructions to file a claim with USPS for a refund, although yours may be too old to be shown anymore.

·5 days ago · EditedANY shipping cost adjustments are in your ebay messages on ebay and are impossible to delete, you can "archive it" but you can never truly delete it, so it's there.....
in messages there is a "from ebay" on the left select that, then scroll till you find it
it will say: "your name", there's an update on your shipping labels
if there is nothing there, then you inadvertently paid that amount when you created the label. In which case there is nothing you can do at all.
***also messages from ebay are not "searchable" in ebay messages, so you will need to scroll thru them but there should only be payouts and misc stuff, ebay doesn't spam messages so it's pretty limited.

If you received an email through your eBay account regarding a USPS postage undercharge, you should not be contacting eBay -- you should be contacting USPS.
Go back to the original email which you had received about the overcharge, and either use the USPS email to contact the post office, or use the 800 telephone number listed in the email.
This problem happens often when a smaller package attaches itself to a larger package during the USPS processing process -- the USPS scanner only sees the top package, and processes the weights of both packages, then makes the price adjustments.
This happened to me years ago, and I simply phoned the 800 telephone number provided in the email. After a few of those annoying "Press this or press that or press the other," I was finally connected to a real human being, who opened up an appeal case for me (using the code number inside the original email), advising me that I would probably receive a refund within a couple days.
And, a few days later, I received a USPS refund.
Whatever you may have been told by those eBay reps, ignore that nonsense -- they're simply trying to get you off the phone.
You can also take the original USPS receipt, and/or the email which you received, and bring both (or either) to your local post office to file a claim.
Good luck.

OP5 days agoI never received an email notifying me about the overcharge. I only became aware of it when I received my credit card statement.

Check your "spam" and "trash" emails for May and June -- it's possible that you did receive such an email, but were totally unaware of it.
