Ebay insurance disappeared after package was lost with USPS
I am absolutely horrified. I sold a camera for $1700, went through the prompts to purchase a label, I selected USPS Priority Mail. It then prompted me if I would like to add insurance, I selected the prompt, added $1700 as amount, also choose to have adult signature. The system then broke out all my costs, label, insurance, adult sig, expense and final amount that I would receive. The total for shipping and insurance was $45+. I then selected next to print out the label. ALL GOOD RIGHT!
Well the package went missing in Memphis Distribution Center. On the 19th without a notice, Ebay stated the package was lost and case closed, Even though it stated on my tracking that is was still in transit.
I called USPS only to find out that I have no insurance with USPS on this except $100.
I then went into Ebay to find my insurance only to have NOTHING!, just stated that I had only paid $19 for my Shipping label. EVEN THOUGH IT WAS VERY CLEAR THAT I SELECTED THE INSURANCE, AMOUNT AND EVEN THE TOTAL WAS LISTED.
Now it shows a total that never includes the extra insurance. It's as if EBAY has scammed me and their program just took off the insurance automatically once the system knew the product went missing.
I am absolutely horrified and I will never ever use Ebay again. This must be a scam from Ebay to its customers. So now I am out of $1700 at the worst time for my finances. I am past furious.

OP1 year agoLadies and Gentlemen, I think I may know what happened.
I purchased Insurance and the Label with the option to pay after the sale ended.
Since the package got lost and the transaction was canceled, the insurance portion was never charged since I opted to take out all fee's at the end. The only real purchase was the label that I printed.
So since I never purchased insurance up front, and the sale was canceled. Hence I am out of insurance since it was never paid for.
I have been a good law abiding Ebay citizen on Ebay, I have always spoke clearly and precisely to all the items I have sold. Now I will never use this system system again since they have treated me so badly with out any care whatsoever, and this is only a lost package. Now I have a $1700 camera lost without insurance. I suggest everyone NEVER buy insurance or a label from Ebay. Buy it separately.

Here's mine from a label printed earlier today:
Service Summary
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoEbay is now wanting to charge me for the service fee of $276. I instructed the seller on Ebay text to cancel the order due to it being lost by USPS. Ebay insurance was not initiated after I selected all the correct prompts and printed the label only to disappear after the item was lost in the mail. Now they want to charge me. So not only have I lost a $1700 camera now they want to charge me the service fee. This is a racket! I tried to issue the buyer a refund last week only to have the option not work, unable to issue refund. Tried several times.

·1 year agoConfused…what is the service fee for?
stephenmorgan
·1 year agoIf eBay forces a refund because the seller was required but did not do it voluntary they will charge you their commissions.
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoUnderstood, However I was unable to refund the seller, tried multiple times. When I selected Refund seller, the option states I was unable to do this. Probably because the item was still in transit.
stephenmorgan
·1 year agoI would be talking with eBay about this and pointing out how many times you tried to refund. Sometimes you will get a sympathetic agent and they can waive the Fees as long as you have not had many issues in the past.
You probabley did not save a screen shots when you refund attempts failed. If you did, that should be a easy decision not to penalize you with the fees.
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoI have been working with the buyer the whole time, both of us were unable to do anything to cancel the sale. I instructed the seller to call Ebay to cancel it since she is the buyer. It's on the chat message instructing her to do this. Ebay didn't have to force anything, the seller wanted the camera. We both waited of weeks. Doesn't EBAY promote they take care of both Seller and Buyer. So if they intervene to help this lost package situation, the BUYER gets screwed. HOW IS THIS HELPING THE BUYER? Shouldn't EBAY want to resolved this. EBAY acts as if I did something wrong, as if I lost the package in the mail. When it's clearly sitting in Memphis TN
stephenmorgan
·1 year agoThe rules and procedures are just that and that is the way it is. However, sometimes the rules and procedures are misinterpreted or misapplied and then a wrong decision is made. When this happens you have to convince eBay they were wrong to get the decision reversed.
Since the buyer and yourself exchanged messages on eBay trying to resolve this, then this should show eBay you were trying but their system failed to allow you to cancel and refund.
On the insurance I do not think there is anything can be done about that. If something failed when you thought you purchased it, well it was up to you to make sure you purchased it.
I am still not sure what you are talking about with "The money was never paid because I chose to have payment taken out on sale." Payment on eBay for shipping is taken when you buy the service. Shipping could be paid with a Credit Card if you have your account set up to do it this way. But it does not matter, you card would be charged as soon as you purchased the shipping.
stephenmorgan
·1 year agoAre you the seller or the buyer?
As seller if you were required to give a refund and did not give it within the timeframe allowed, then eBay will give the refund on your behalf. If they have to force a refund from you then they will charge you their commissions. If the refund is given by the seller then eBay will not charge their commissions. Basically there is a severe penalty for not doing as eBay wanted.
On your other post you mention
"I purchased Insurance and the Label with the option to pay after the sale ended."
Not sure what that is because you should have been charged the shipping fees when you purchased the shipping services.
Your Order Detail will show you exactly who the monies were paid to. Your Transactions Reports will also show you how the monies were distributed on your behalf and who it went to.
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoI had selected Shipping and Insurance, Insurance alone was $48, Label was 19.xx, Signature was 5.xx, all itemized. Hit accept, option to pay up front on on sale. I chose on sale. However the insurance was never billed or even itemized after the package went missing or missed the deadline. It's as if, Ebay insurance was canceled after the item went missing.
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoThe money was never paid because I chose to have payment taken out on sale. Hence, no payment up front, big mistake. Once the order was canceled, the insurance payment went away since it was never paid. Option only to pay on sale of item
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoI am the seller. I could not give a refund, option was not allowed, due to item being in transit. It's been in transit for now two months. Probably in a USPS employee's house by now.

·1 year agoIf there is any question about insurance, you should file a package intercept with the USPS and get that package back if possible. It is probably still in the system and not actually lost, though eBay considers it "lost" in that time frame. It will probably pop up in the system in a few weeks (no guarantee of course, but possible). If the USPS still has it, you want to file that package intercept and get it back.
If the package is still in the system and not lost, and ends up being delivered to your buyer, you could be out your money and item (your buyer might be honest, tell you that it arrived and offer to rebuy the item, but you can't rely on that, if they are dishonest they can get the camera free and you have virtually no recourse.)

THE USPS CAN NOT BE TRUSTED with expensive items. These need to be shipped by other carriers
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoI know that but since I had insurance I thought it was OK
slati_2013
·1 year agoAdding insurance can be a bit confusing on eBay. Because the default insurance is ShipCover, then you have to swap it out for the USPS insurance and then make sure that the amount for the sale is correct. Sometimes it messes up I so I always make sure I have USPS insurance and the right sale amount selected.
Also it is easy to tell you have insurance because the shipping total will go up by about $35 more for an amount like $1700. If I am reading you right, you did indeed pay something close to $50 for the label meaning it included the insurance but when the label was paid for the insurance was not included.
I use PayPal for my shipping labels so I get a notification from PayPal for every label bought, that way I can prove to eBay what I paid in a case like this. As many people keep asking, are you positively sure when you clicked to purchase the label you saw the $48 you think you paid? Do you have a copy of the label? When you printed the label, it would have said on it, "USPS Signature Tracking" and at the top left underneath the label info, it should say "Insured". If you are not seeing "Insured" then somehow your purchase of the insurance simply did not go through. On eBay when doing anything, you really have to keep you eye out for stuff like this because defaults can get turned on or off, or previous settings maintained.
eBay is not going to scam you. They purchase the label for you from the USPS. They can't manipulate it. Something simply went wrong. If the insurance purchase went through, you would have seen it on the printed label. They can't go back and remove it.

·1 year agounless I am confused, shipcover insurance is not going to show as a USPS label cost on the label.

·1 year agoYou can look at 'shipping labels' purchased on ebay.
If you paid $19; then you didn't do something correct (like approve when purchasing) so you have NO insurance.

You didnt notice at the time of printing the label that you were only paying $19 for shipping? Sounds like the options you selected for extra insurance didnt go thru? Were you asked to confirm those options and did you do that?
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoYes I was asked to confirm these additional items, which I selected yes. Total break down all listed with final cost. I selected it to be taken out of the final sale.

·1 year agoYou don't need to have saved a screenshot. If you go to the order, click on the order number (it's formatted as xx-xxxxx-xxxxx), you can go the the bottom right side of the transaction and click on "view more details." On that page, you can further click to see exactly what you paid for shipping.
It sound to me as if you calculated the insurance cost but didn't click through to purchase it. I don't believe you were charged for the additional insurance although you do have $100 coverage that's included with GA (ground advantage) and priority mail.
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoIt was 19 for cable and an additional $48 for the insurance.

·1 year agoDoesnt the insurance show on a UPSP priority pkg label? A bar code or something?
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoNothing...I have the label with items but no insurance.
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoNo it does not, but it did show on the breakdown of how much I would get paid itemizing all the options, the next screen was to print the label. I confirmed the insurance, it prefilled with the amount of 1700, I selected the additional adult signature. I never knew to check the label to see if it has the insurance portion. I assumed that since I had checked and confirmed all the additional options it would be in the system.
bonjourami
·1 year agoDid you get a receipt when you shipped the pkg?
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoNope...does not show, even though it totaled out the whole itemized list, including 1700 of insurance. When I printed the label, I even asked the guy at the mail center, it's got insurance right? yes he said. But it didn't only had $100. So the system showed the whole amount, I never thought to question it since it itemized all the fee's.
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoNo..it was itemized when I selected the label, everything looked good, but remember since I selected to pay, the insurance on receipt of money. It was an option. No money upfront, no insurance. I bet you if the item went through and I received my money the system would have taken out their 48 for insurance.
slippinjimmy
·1 year agoProbably this^^^^
If USPS there was no added insurance you probably bought insurance via ShipCover and that is who you file the claim with (they may want to you use the $100 insurance built in by USPS as they will not cover any included carrier insurance).
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoI checked, it does not give me any options under the items I sold for insurance. It's as if I never had it or selected it even though it showed on the breakdown I had, with totals, all options and end figure. Super clean, simple.
stuff4divas
·1 year ago@nigelbrn what method of payment did u use for the $45+ ? can u pull up that info to prove payment?
mtgraves7984
·1 year ago@stuff4divas
Wasn't thinking ShipCover (but of USPS), and 17 (hundred) x 2.83 (per hundred)= $48.11... so, the OP's "$45+" would work. 🤔
bonjourami
·1 year agoBut he says he only paid $19 for the label.

OP1 year agoIt showed I paid the label and the insurance. Now after its lost it only shows I paid the label.
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoYes correct, I do think it was $48 something. I would have never shipped anything without insurance or adult sig, especially when its this amount.
mtgraves7984
·1 year agoWowzer. This is one I've never heard of. So, your transaction record showed $45+ for shipping, but now shows only $19?
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoCorrect...it's as if my options to select the optional insurance vanished. To me it was as if I never selected those option, even though it gave me the total breakdown showing insurance.
bonjourami
·1 year agoWhy would it be a scam from Ebay? They dont pay out the insurance, USPS does.
If the USPS insurance you purchased for your eBay package isn't showing, check your original mailing receipt, outer packaging, or printed electronic label record for evidence of insurance. If you purchased the shipping label through eBay, you might have automatic insurance, and you can file a claim with USPS.
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoI don't believe that is correct, Ebay has their own insurance called "slipcover insurance", even though it gave me the whole break out, I never thought I needed to screen shot it as reference. Big mistake. USPS states there is no insurance on it, but it showed on the system.
nigelbrn
OP1 year agoThe amount is not on the label receipt or for the amount I selected in the Ebay system. Just the default $100 for items over a certain amount. I never knew that the insurance was printed on the label. It's as if the Ebay system didn't work or glitched in adding the insurance. Scam, because, it all disappeared on the Ebay system. Why would it itemize and my approval of insurance only to disappear.
