E-bay fee 31.4%
I just sold a network card for $5.99 plus shipping. E-bay charged a $1.88 selling fee on the $5.99. This comes out to a 31.4% total selling fee. When you talk to them, they alway deny that they are charging this much. This is scandalous!

·2 years agoAs others have shown you how fees are charged the amount of $1.88 is correct. It's all in writing. You need to evaluate if selling low end items is worth it to you. Unless you have many items of less than $6 or less to sell it really isn't worth it as far as making money. You are basically getting rid of stuff.

What was the total amount the buyer paid?

OP2 years agoHello. $11.17 Total ( $5.99 for network card; $4.47 shipping; and $.71 sales tax). I received $4.11 after the $1.88 selling fee was taken off the $5.99 (5.99 - 1.88 = 4.11).

·2 years agoIf the full fee is coming out of the item that means you are charging the buyer the commercial shipping rate. That means you should increase your price to cover the fees on the shipping value.
Or you could increase shipping by charging the buyer the retail rate and that typically gives cushion for the fees on shipping.
You could argue that the fees on shipping are unfair.
However let me ask you this. If the seller instead sold it with free shipping for $10.46 +0.00 shipping.
Are you thinking you should pay leas fees than them? Because that's what you are basically saying .

Yes. Precisely. That's the way eBay's fees work, the way the math is done.
Simple adding and subtracting, probably 4th or 5th grade level numbers.
That does NOT mean that eBay's selling fees were calculated on only $5.99, the price of your network card.
Try this mathematical calculation: Start with the $11.17 total that was paid by your buyer.
Multiply $11.17 by .1325 = $1.48. (That's eBay's Final Value Fee Percentage, 13.25% for most categories.)
Add $0.40, which is eBay's Per Order flat fee on sales total prices that are $10.01 and over.
$1.48 + 0.40 = $1.88. That's the total of eBay's selling fees on that transaction: 13.25% of the total amount paid by your buyer plus $0.40.

·2 years agoThat's the online discounted rate; the actual label cost @wlipscomb2013 .
The question is whether you want to charge buyers retail rates or discounted rates. Keep in mind that you have access to discounted rates when you purchase labels on eBay regardless of how much you charge the buyer.
Since eBay charges a fee on total cost buyer pays (item + ship + tax), by charging discounted shipping rates you are losing money on every single package. If you want to make up for that you can add a handling fee or increase your item costs - or simply charge retail rates for a built in cushion instead of passing on the discounts.
The setting to offer buyers discounted rates can be found on your shipping preferences page under the carrier specific discounts setting: https://www.ebay.com/ship/prf

·2 years agoYou know they did not charge 1.88 selling fee just on the 5.99...You are smarter than that...especially since you MUST have noticed your previous sale was even more "scandalous" percentage wise......

·2 years agoeBay charges the final value fee percentage based on the buyer's total payment, including shipping and sales tax. So if you divide that fee by just the item selling price, that will inflate the percentage, especially when the shipping cost is almost equal to the selling price.

·2 years agoWhen selling low cost items although the "fees" are the same it will always be a higher %age of the sale.
Your fee% does not change, but the ratio of the amount of the fee compared to the amount of the sale will always vary based on selling price.

·2 years agoA fee of .30 or .40 for the item sold....with your shipping it went over $10. so it might be .40. Others here might be able to answer that.
And then the eBay percent fee.
Tax is added but taken off of course so that will not be included.
The eBay fee is item + shipping...not just the item.
And if an International buyer made a purchase with an outside credit card even though it is an USA address that is an extra fee.
Plus if it was promoted there is another fee. For others here: is the promoted fee on only the item or item plus shipping?

Yes. Currently, eBay's "Per Order" fee is:
30 cents per order when the Total Amount of the Sale is $10.00 or less.
40 cents per order when the Total Amount of the Sale is $10.01 or more.
This "Per Order" fee is charged to the seller in addition to the Final Value Fee (FVF), which is a percentage of -- again --
the Total Amount of the Sale.
BTW, "james", eBay's international fee has nothing to do with "if an international buyer [makes] a purchase with an outside credit card." OP is already confused enough on the FVF calculation. Inaccurate information is not helpful.

·2 years agoEbay generally charges 13.25% on the total price of the sale including the shipping and sales tax. Not just the price of the item.
Did you also happen to have this listed promoted? There are additional fees if you promoted your item.
If you go to the Payments tab in Seller Hub, you can find the exact breakdowns.

·2 years agoNot correct; you sold a Card for $10+ (with Shipping included, which is the same as $10 Free Shipping which is what y ou are charged on, not to mention ALSO the Sales Tax the buyer paid);
You are doing the math wrong.
Also; are you doing any 'promotions'? which is a percentage MORE (at least 2%)

·2 years agoI don't think you're looking at the right listing if you're seeing $10 + ship.
This is the item that sold for $5.99 + ship:

You're lucky you got it sold. That would have been in my slot card scrap bin.

·2 years agoThe fee was not charged on $5.99. It was charged on the total amount buyer paid (item + ship + sales tax).
