Charged additionally for underpaid shipping label!
I was charged additionally for underpaid shipping label. I paid for a package weight 1lb 10oz (1 pair women's jeans) while the actual weight was 1lb 8oz. I always allow for few ounces over on my packages, and today I got a notice about shipping label adjustment. The amount was small (-$1.14) but still was taking out of my account. Regardless the amount it does not make it right. Did anyone have similar issues? I wonder who is doing this: EBay or USPS. I did not find any way to report this issue.

·1 year agoI get plenty of label adjustments. It isn’t a scam or a way to make more money when you are using USPS. I get just as many refunds as I do charges. Sometimes, I have cut a weight a bit too close. Sometimes I just fat finger, the weight or the dimensions. Often, it is just a mistake in the USPS weight measurement. No way I can send an LP box set that weighs 13 ounces, but that is what the USPS told me, so I received a refund. Overtime, I’m about even with charges and refunds – Certainly not enough for me to worry about it either way.

·1 year agoAnother thing would be shipping with a Carrier like UPS or Fedex.
For the next 364 Days ship 1 package out each day and add 5 lbs.
On day 365 ship out a package under 5 lbs.
Total Refunds on Overpaid Packages will be 0. On Day 365 you will receive an Underpaid Fee.
They can take an take again !

·1 year agoI shipped a box marked 22 X 12 X 4 right on the box.
I get an overcharge, Quickly i dialed 1-800-UPS and the Operator said your box was 22 x 12 x 5.
I replied do you have a measurements and scale center. He said no, the Driver determined it to be Oversize by 1" THAT'S 1 INCH. FOR $2.88
The Driver must have used his middle finger to measure my box.
Just Another way of legally stealing, like Paying Insertion Fees on Items and your nowhere near your Insertion Fee limit.

·1 year agoHey @nh_sales_lv . Here's the thing with Uline boxes (and most every brand's boxes): the dimensions printed on the box are interior measurements. Carriers bill based on exterior measurements.

·1 year agoThat may be the Case but Printed Dimensions should be Accepted as the Standard. You can't have Drivers making Executive Decisions over 1/4" of fluff. That's not their Role.

·1 year agoHi @yoonix1 . Is it possible the package was shipped from a different zip code than your ship from address?
Specifically, does the PO where you shipped it have a different first 3 digits of the zip code?
There is exactly $1.14 difference for a 2 lb Ground Adv package to zone 4 vs zone 5 with eBay discounted rates.
If you shipped from a different zip, that would account for the difference because the PO zone to your buyer is zone 5 while your ship from zone to your buyer is zone 4.

Look at the cost adjustment details on that page and copy/paste what it says.
There's an easy way to dispute cost adjustments online through USPS, however I'm guessing that would be a waste of your time as the specific amount tells me the adjustment is probably legit.
Edit to add: the zone 4 rate for 2 lb Ground Adv is $6.53 and the zone 5 rate is $7.67 = difference of $1.14
Also, since you're charging buyers retail rates, if the buyer was in zone 4 they would have paid $11.40 shipping. Even factoring in eBay fees there is more than enough cushion there to cover the $1.14 difference.

OP1 year agoYes, the ship from zip code was 65787, and I dropped it at post office 65324. If this gonna make a difference? The package went to TX 77070.

·1 year agoYes, 100%. That's a difference of zone 4 vs zone 5 rate.

Zones are based on the first 3 digits of the zip code.
This was a legit adjustment, not something to dispute.

·1 year agoFWIW, Here is one from yesterday that UPS sent thru PirateShip. I think I will take a pass on disputing this and save the dispute energy for something noteworthy.... Though the dispute process looks pretty easy via Pirateship.

·1 year agoThat screenshot from PirateShip looks as if they intercepted the original message, swapped in their own, and left out all the relevant details that would have been in the original message from the USPS. Not helpful.

·1 year agoHey @a_c_green - when you view the label details on Pirate it provides the full adjustment breakdown in detail. The email is just an alert and doesn't have the nitty gritty.

·1 year agoWeight is one of the factors when it comes to the price of a shipping label.
The size of the package is the other.
You state "size 13 X 10 eBay polymailer". "about 2" thick". So you entered that into the shipping calculator.
Could be that polymailer measured 14" X 11" with the item in it. Can't go off the mailer size. About 2" isn't good either, you need an exact measurement, then round up.

The "thickness ABOUT 2". " caught my eye. "About" isn't good enough when measuring packages.
You want to measure the size of the package as well, not just assume that a 13 X 10 poly mailer is going to measure 13" X 10".

·1 year agoI'm flattered that you paged me, but without full information about the package, such as dimensions and both ZIP Codes, it's just speculation. Possibly they entered the wrong package dimensions and paid a Cubic rate for a package that was smaller than the actual dimensions.

I measured the package 1lb 8oz, and put a weight for a shipping label at 1lb 10oz ( which will not make a difference in price till it goes over 2lb). Unless USPS got the package soak wet to increase the weight over 2 lb, I don't see how it would happen. EBay should have a way for the Sellers to dispute such charges, especially if it happens to many people. I do no see such way. And, for sure I would do nothing right now because it's only a dollar. Buy if USPS does it to many people, it would be a substantial amount.

·1 year agoAs I mentioned in my post, the package dimensions are part of figuring out what happened.
eBay shipping labels charge the discounted online Cubic rate for Priority Mail packages up to .5 cubic foot and Ground Advantage up to 1 cubic foot. There is also a special formula for padded envelopes, but IIRC the eBay label purchase page doesn't accommodate that. The discounted online Cubic rates are not related to package weight, except that they have a maximum weight of 20 pounds.
The point here is that the postage for your package was priced according to its dimensions not its weight, and if the dimensions used for your label were not accurate then the postage might not be, either.

·1 year agoOR the USPS just weigh it wrong, if you put in the correct measurements and weight(1lb 8-12 oz, labels round them up anyway)when you printed the label, then most likely their scale was off. I had 4 back in March, I know for a fact I was right and won all the case's. I posted a thread about not getting any emails from ebay or USPS about the underage.

·1 year agoWhat explanation was given in the pricing adjustment message you received? Perhaps you can copy-and-paste it in here (without revealing personal info).
It's not an eBay adjustment; it's a USPS adjustment, communicated back to you via the contact info for you in the original label purchase. If the info you provided about the package was accurate in terms of dimensions and weight (and whatever explanation you received was pointing at that as the problem area), I would follow the link given previously to dispute the charge with USPS.

OP1 year agoI did not receive an email from EBay in regard to the adjustment. I saw it by looking at the transactions summary. I even went and checked my deleted and spam folder, and nothing. Otherwise EBay sends me all different kinds of emails but not for that.

·1 year ago@yoonix1 There IS a way to dispute it! I've done it before & won. But it's not through eBay, it's directly with the USPS, which is where those messages originate. All the info to dispute is in the emails you get. Just follow the instructions.
Also, are you aware that over 1lb, your measurments matter for GA? Are you sure you had the right measurements? I didn't realize this until recently & sent a bunch out as 1x1x1. Oops.

·1 year agoThe rule is to always round to the next pound. So in this case you should have put the weight at 2 pounds.

·1 year agoWhich also would have made no difference as pricing does not increase until you go beyond the zero-ounce mark. The cost of a 2 lb 0 oz package is the same as that for 1 lb 10 oz. The price only goes up for 2 lb 1 oz or higher.
@yoonix1 : What exactly did the message say? There is no pricing adjustment between 1 lb 8 oz and 1 lb 10 oz.

·1 year ago@yoonix1 I have had 5 or 6 USPS adjustments over the past 8 years.
Half were debits and half were credits. All for chump change amounts as you experienced.

·1 year agoUSPS reports the difference. Personally, I like that eBay just charges us the difference as the alternative would be to demand the recipient pay the difference ...which would be a disaster for customer service. Can you imagine receiving a package from a seller but not being able to get it unless you paid the post office more? This feature, while aggravating on the face of it, is a nice perk of selling through this platform IMO.
If you feel the calculation was made in error, you can appeal it with the USPS.

·1 year agoThere is no difference in postage between 1 lb 10 oz and 1 lb 8 oz. When the package is over one pound then you pay by the pound - not by the ounce. What was the exact wording of the message you received?

·1 year agoThis is coming from USPS, most likely a slightly oversized package. Consider yourself lucky that it was only $1.14, most that report here are on the $100…..
