Can't quite figure out USPS pricing...
Summary: sandebottomz is confused about USPS postage pricing as they noticed a discrepancy where a lighter package was more expensive to ship than a heavier one. eoma689485 explains that the USPS offers competitive discounts on certain package weights to compete with other carriers, which may account for the unusual pricing difference.
Hello all,
Yes, I went and read some of the previous posts regarding the changes in postage but I can't quite figure this out. I apologize in advance if this has been answered.
I sold a shirt and the buyer was charged $5.80 postage.
I packaged it up as small as possible in a tyvek, weighed 14 ounces and the postage was $6.52...thinking I could reduce the postage for them.
$5.80 postage, package size was 12x12x4 and 2 lbs (yes, I refund postage overages of a $1 or more)
$6.52 postage, package size was 11x10x2 and 14 ounces.
I tired adjusting numbers just to see if it was a glitch, and every time the lower weight/smaller package had higher postage.
I'm puzzled....

·3 weeks agoThe 14 oz package pays a premium baseline price, while the 2 lb package qualifies for aggressive competitive discounts.
The Post Office lowered the price for 3 Lb to 5 Lb packages to be more competitive with UPS and FedEx - then they started including 2 Lb packages.

OP3 weeks agoHmm, okay! Thank you for the information, I didn't know about that price adjustment. I'm not sure I can see their reasoning, I just left it at the heavier weight. We'll see if I get charged more postage I suppose. Thanks for your reply.
