Buyer Didn't Cover Shipping Costs
I shipped a package today with shipping paid by buyer. Unfortunately the buyer didn't cover the shipping fees for the weight of the package, so I ended up having to pay the fee out of pocket. Is there any way I can get refunded the shipping amount?

·2 years agoThanks for the reply. I don't know how I would have set up an item with a flat $2.31 shipping. I know about the $3.79 flat shipping items. I'm working on changing them.

·2 years agoThe OP likely listed the correct package dimensions.
This is happening to me right now: just sold 5 items in a multi-item listing. Each item is identical, weights 28 lbs, and has the same box dimensions. eBay chose to have the buyer pay $205.76 for shipping: that's $41.15 per item. HOWEVER, using the very shipping method the buyer selected, the cost is $57.76 per item.
What's crazy is that the buyer chose USPS Ground Advantage at $57.76, but FedEx and UPS are quoting at $15.39 and $21.08 respectively.
As an occasional seller on eBay since 2001, I have to say I'm done with eBay. This is a joke trying to figure out all the bull**bleep** with shipping snafus, not to mention the inflated fee-for-everything approach that reeks of desperation. Not at all the company it used to be.

·2 years agoCombined shipping would be for the items to be shipped together in one package. I doubt that @sac86738 was able to ship 5-52" ceiling fans in one box! and if so, it certainly would be overweight for ground advantage.
@sac86738 The reason for the huge price is because those fans are way larger than 1 cubic foot and are subject to surcharges.
On another note, I've never heard of a fan that "kills covid." Just sayin'

·2 years agoThey could have applied combined shipping rules in error.
When an order exceeds allowable weight, eBay will combine until the limit is reached then start the calculation for a new package.
Example: If I offer First Class Package International, the limit is 4 lb. Sell an item that's 1 lb. Buyer purchases 6. I have a rule to combine shipping based on weight. The calculator will automatically charge them for one combined 4 lb package and one 2 lb package.

·2 years agoTo close the loop (on my thread at least): on eBay's advice, I canceled the original auction and re-listed the fans as a multi-item auction instead of selling them all together as a lot. They sold quickly, and the shipping was calculated for each box correctly.
To whomever hadn't heard of covid-killing fans: now you have. If you're interested in "doing your own research" go right ahead. They use UV-C to kill pathogens, same tech as what you'd find in a hospital.

As Stated previously you are responsible for setting shipping price in your listing is up to you alone so you are responsible for covering the difference in cost.

·2 years agoGet refunded from who? It is up to the seller to put the shipping fee that they want to collect in the listing. Once an item is sold, the buyer then pays what the listing stated.
The only person that can refund a shipping amount is the seller, and since the seller is you then you would have to get that refund from yourself which of course makes no sense.

·2 years agoBuyer pays shipping based on information you put in your listing. If you didn't charge enough, the expense falls to you to cover.
When you use calculated shipping you have to ensure your package dimensions and weight on the listing form are accurate.

·2 years agoI had the same problem today. The package dimensions were correct and I was off a little on the weight but it was a 1st class package 4x4x4 weight 5 oz and eBay didn't charge but $2.37 for shipping??

·2 years agoI agree with the other poster: It sounds like the shipping calculator charged your buyer for a First Class flat (AKA Large envelope) rather than for a package (which would show up as Ground Advantage or Priority Mail).
Last month, USPS eliminated the postage category formerly known as "First Class package." It is now part of a newly named service, Ground Advantage, which also incorporates the services formerly known as Parcel Select and as Retail Ground (long ago, those were both known as Parcel Post). If you have any listings which are intended to charge buyers for First Class packages (as you apparently intended to do with your recent Sold item), you need to revise those listings so they charge buyers for Ground Advantage. This would remove the risk of future errors in service type (i.e., flat vs package).
Here's a link to the current USPS rates; however, eBay's prices for Priority Mail are often lower than the published xCommercial rates.

·2 years agoI think it was probably a glich. I have a lot of items that need to be changed over from 1st class to Ground Advantage but it still should have calculated it with the weight and dimensions. It wasn't listed as a flat envelope and again the dimensions that were endered were 4" x 4" x 4" weight 5oz.

·2 years agoNot a glitch @reclaimed_components . Appears you had the listing set up with a flat ship cost of $2.37, not calculated. Package type not the issue unless perhaps you had a handling fee of 6 cents because $2.37 does not match the current $2.31 FCM rate for a 5 oz flat.
I ran a scan on your listings. You have a few listings you need to adjust that are under charging shipping:
