Buyer changed shipping address but with UPS after I provided a tracking number.
So I ended up selling an intake manifold on Ebay. Buyer pays and I ship it out using his address on the order page from Ebay. 2 days after I provide the buyer with a tracking number, he contacts UPS and changes the delivery address. I contact the buyer saying this is suspicous. He states that he needs the manifold shipped to his mechanic. I reply that I can only ship to the address on the Ebay order, which I did. But now buyers can change the delivery address after I ship? If they initiate a delivery address change after I ship it, can they open up an INR claim and this is ok with Ebay? I called up UPS and told them to send the package back to me. It is currently still in transit and I will see if I get it back. This seems like a scam.

·9 months agoUPS and FEDEX have restrictions which are set up for some account holders.
It is possible for a UPS or FEDEX account to have address changes disabled on the account.
I have had shipments from Xfinity Mobile using FEDEX which cannot have the address changed. The option is delivery to the address on the label or hold at a FEDEX facility.
If the address can be changed when you buy on Ebay, it is because Ebay did not request it not be permitted.

·9 months agoThe help page for the Money Back Guarantee states that INR claims are not covered for shipments where “the buyer used third-party freight forwarding or mail direction†but the circumstances are described as the item being sent to another address “after delivery,†not “during delivery,†so I don’t know if eBay would conform to the letter or spirit of that exclusion in the event of a non-delivery claim.

·9 months agoI have accounts with ups and FedEx. Ups is set up to automatically redirect to the ups store. It knows it's me from my address. When I pick up, I have to sign and show ID.
FedEx is different. After the first tracking scan, you can redirect your delivery to a FedEx pickup point sometimes. Since there are different delivery types. I think FedEx ground is the only one you can redirect. The times I can't, it's FedEx home or where usps does the final leg of delivery, fedex smart post. I also have to sign and show id for pickup. It usually doesn't show delivered until I sign for it and they scan it out of the system.

·9 months agoI remember back when UPS would leave an attempted delivery slip on the front door, and there was a section where you could provide an alternate delivery address. Seems like recipients have always had this option.

·9 months agoJust too much going on here!
1. Did you ship with signature required?
2.Did you even check this buyer's profile / feedback?
3. Did you look up the shipping address?
How could any buyer re-direct a shipment with any shipping service?
My only guess at this time is if the buyer provided the seller with a pre-paid shipping label.
Stil not sure we are getting all the details on this issue but reminds sellers to keep your guard up.

·9 months agoIn some cases and under certain conditions it can be done. Generally you need to have an account with the carrier and can verify that you are the recipient, and even then, your redirection can only be local (such as to the next-door neighbor or local carrier outlet or similar); you cannot redirect it out of state someplace.
Regarding FedEx, eBay themselves are the shipper of record for sellers using that carrier, and it's supposed to be a special arrangement in which no buyer can redirect his delivery at all. That doesn't always work, as there have been stories here about scam buyers managing to bamboozle FedEx into redirecting an eBay package anyway. I saw tracking of one such unauthorized redirection that was supposed to go to my hometown (just coincidence, not an order of mine) but instead wound up in another city 20 miles away. I don't know if the seller lost that one or not.
Oh, yeah, that's not good. It puts the buyer in the driver's seat as being the sender of the package as well as the recipient, making it much easier for him to redirect the package elsewhere, then file an Item Not Received claim for the address he sent with the payment.

·9 months agoWhat was your Buyers Feedback like? Did Buyer have a good past history on ebay. Verifiable. Was he Bonafide.
If Buyer had been on ebay for a while, no issues, I would have probably let this go.
Yes, a "Recipient" can reroute a UPS package during transit.
Can a Recipent reroute a UPS package while in Transit?
Yes, a recipient can reroute a UPS package using UPS My Choice, typically before the first delivery attempt, by tracking the package online and selecting options like "Change My Delivery" to redirect to a new address or hold for pickup, though some shipments have restrictions and a fee might apply for the Delivery Intercept service.
Was the package being rerouted to a whole other city, state, country? Did the Buyer reroute it from Chicago going to Nigeria? Or, just to a Mechanic Shop 12 blocks away from his Residence. The original address on the label?
To me, this doesn't sound like a Scam whatsoever. Very very very Legitimate. NOT something a scammer would try.
Funny, you just talked yourself out of what, a $4000 sale? Or was it that $1000 manifold? Either way, it's still comical how "suspicions", unfounded suspicions at that, sometimes cost Sellers money. This case, possibly thousands.
You can't make this stuff up. 😂

·9 months agoThis isn't much of a risk. To have a package redirected by UPS or FedEx, you need a verified account. Even then, there are limitations to what can be done. Typically, these redirects are just to UPS or FedEx centers. Yep, I can have FedEx deliver to a new location, but some rando can't hijack your shipment, even with the tracking number.

·9 months agoI thought Ebay had their accounts set up to where a buyer couldn't change the delivery address on UPS and FedEx?

They don’t.
I’ve never had to do this until last week. Noticed my delivery via UPS (eBay purchase) will be delivered at a time I will not be home and was able to go to UPS and update/change my delivery to where I will be. It was actually very easy to do, but I also have a UPS account, so not sure how easy it is for someone who doesn’t?
I can see where in this day and age of fraud/scams where people would be afraid of any of this, but I still believe the seller would be covered in this situation as they did ship to address that was given at the time of purchase.

·9 months agoI wonder if they've changed it recently.
There's been other post where a buyer has tried changing the address and they would get a message saying the account holder has restricted that option.
Maybe it was just FedEx, don't know?

·9 months agoI’m not that familiar with using UPS, but what???
The recipient of a package is able to re-route a package in transit?? That’s crazy. And l’m just curious, what if the recipient re-routes it to a location that results in a higher shipping price?

Yes. If you are going to be somewhere else when a UPS package is scheduled to be delivered, you can easily change that, but it’s also at a cost. I believe it’s $16.99 to do this, but may better guarantee your package reaches your buyer in the end and everyone is happy.
Maybe they don’t trust an item siting on their porch if they’re going to be gone or like your buyer, needed it shipped directly to the mechanic.
My understanding is that if you do everything right on your end, shipping to given address at the time of purchase, you are still covered if buyer needs to change this somewhere between point A and point B.
I personally would not have an issue with a buyer doing this, but I certainly do not sell items that cost an arm and a leg.

·9 months agoOnce I receive a notice from UPS that an item is on the way, I know that I am able to change the delivery address. Not sure how ebay would handle a situation like that.

·9 months ago#1) A buyer or recipient of a package is not supposed to be able to change the address with the carrier.
#2) If you shipped it to the address on the ebay label, you are covered. I wouldn't be concerned with any changes after that.

·9 months agoI actually have any UPS package redirected automatically to a pick up point. If I see it gets shipped FedEx, I'll try to redirect that to a pick up point as well. Sometimes it lets me, sometimes it doesn't.
Any packages delivered while I'm at work have a very high probability of being lifted before I get home. Not all neighborhoods are safe for package delivery. I'd be bummed if you recalled my package en route.
But yeah, a manifold is not really a package.

·9 months ago@kohlskoatings You made the absolute right call to get the package back. You need to report that buyer to eBay and get that on the record - now. Messages are great, but that report is what will count if something else goes awry.
A couple of years ago I had a buyer do this very thing, only it was with USPS. I shipped a $70 as normal. Two days after I shipped it, I got an alert from eBay that the card used to buy the item had been reported stolen. I looked at the tracking to see if the item had been delivered, and it was in Dallas. I'm in Virginia, and it was just going to Atlanta. Today something like that could be in California and it wouldn't alone raise alarm bells given how screwed up USPS can be at times. I ended up calling USPS and that's when I learned the buyer had called in the day I shipped it and had it re-routed to an address in Texas. I did not reach out to the buyer. I had the package re-routed back to me. USPS did not charge me for the intercept.
I got my package back and I refunded the stolen card so the funds did not have to be automatically taken.
Your buyer may be legit, but in no circumstances should buyers be allowed to reroute packages. If a buyer does that, then eBay's Money-back Guarantee needs to be voided IMHO.

·9 months agoThis can't be right. It sounds like I could find a recently-sold item that I'd like to have and just contact UPS or whoever to redirect the package to me. Do I have to at least prove that I AM the buyer? If not, excuse me while I go shopping for some recent diamond bracelet sales.

·9 months agoyou would need the tracking number but there are many people who could get tracking numbers off of valuable looking packages in transit, and have them redirected,
soh.maryl
·9 months agoBut those people would have to be employed by the carrier, right?
Since they are the ones who'd see the "valuable looking packages"?
bashort
·9 months agonot necessarily, there are a couple different UPS drop off spots at businesses that I use and the packages awaiting pickup are sitting where any customer that comes in the store has easy access to them in parts of the store where there is usually no one there.

·9 months agoEBAY return system is "automated" so most likely they would be able to open INR return. And because tracking# will show item was different address than on EBAY record (they would probably win the case).
Good thing EBAY has access to all your emails with this customer. So, if this becomes a problem you could appeal EBAYs decision on INR case.
Good luck with this...
