Anyone else struggling with the USPS Ground Advantage changes for lightweight packages (4 oz, 8 oz, 12 oz, and 16 oz)?

Summary: marmalid discusses the challenges of selling car parts on eBay with the added pressures of free shipping and returns, especially after USPS rate increases. Various sellers suggest switching to calculated shipping, raising prices slightly, or using different carriers like FedEx. shire123 emphasizes the inevitability of adjusting business models due to rising costs, while sassykzt advises offering shipping discounts for multiple item purchases. marmalid notes that low-priced items are particularly hard to sell profitably under the current conditions, and other sellers share similar frustrations with eBay's shipping calculations.

We sell in the eBay Motors Parts & Accessories category and offer free shipping on all orders. On top of that, eBay requires free returns, which means we're also paying return shipping when buyers return an item for virtually any reason. Now, with the USPS Ground Advantage pricing changes, especially for the rural ZIP codes, it has become extremely difficult to price items competitively.

For those of you offering free shipping, how are you adjusting your pricing? Are you increasing prices across the board, absorbing the cost, switching carriers, or changing your shipping strategy?

With shipping costs continuing to rise while buyers still expect free shipping and free returns, it's becoming harder to stay profitable on lower-priced items.

I'd really like to hear what other sellers are doing. Any ideas or strategies that have worked for you?

I just cancelled my 1st order due to ebay's automatic calculator not assessing the correct buyer shipping cost. Cancelled under the "there is an issue with the buyers address" along with an explanation to buyer that ebay's calculator is broken not reflecting the accurate shipping price. The calculator works just fine on upping the seller cost...but does not for the buyer...The order cancelled would have actually cost me money...great tax write-off. But I am not in business to give away a product and pay to do so...sorry does not work that way. 90% of the other sales were correctly assessed..no issues.

ebay's shipping calculator HAS TO BE BROKEN. They wanted to charge a prospective buyer $17 to send an 11 oz. item over ground advantage... from Virginia to North Carolina.... AND, the labels for last two orders I had for ground advantage (today) are telling me I have to take the item to UPS so USP can send it to USPS for shipment.... I took the first one to USPS and they said I had to take it to UPS...what I happening? I tried to recreate the listing of the item above to see what was going on - it calculated ground advantage from $9.50 and up - but when I looked at the shipping to ship it to ME, it said $13.99 - and I actually LIVE where the item is LOCATED. So where is the location that only costs $9.50????? It is seriously messed up and I can't believe anyone is buying anything on ebay right now. I heard they are going to change the whole shipping process so sellers just get sent a shipping label by ebay and THAT determines how you will send it - as a private seller. All the choice goes to the buyer, who pays ebay for everything, ebay sends YOU a label with whatever the buyer chose - even if you've never heard of it.... and even if they are not local to you. Also, in this way, ebay gets all the extra funds from the purchase of the reduced cost label - not the seller - but you still will pay your percentage of that cost anywho. I think I will look for other places to sell.

That is why I never use free shipping, once USPS starts offering free shipping then I will look into it.

Every know there is no such thing as free shipping and with shipping costs raising daily YOU are the one losing money, Not to mention you have to revise all your "free" listing everytime or you will find yourself getting squeezed out and end up costing you money. Using Calculated shipping is supposed to automatically raise the increase. Fedex and UPS are to sneaky at adding cling ons ad unless you pay close attention you account gets charged for their up charges...remember while not perfect USPS goes every where everyday and do not add cling ons.

"For those of you offering free shipping, how are you adjusting your pricing? Are you increasing prices across the board, absorbing the cost, switching carriers, or changing your shipping strategy?"

actually depending on the item, all of the above! Walking away from low $ items that I normally would have bought and made a couple bucks on, using FedEx Ground Economy more when its less $ , Items I have Bought right, Absorbing the difference, and switching to calculated shipping on some items.

truth be know ,there are a lot of folks selling parts on eBay at a loss! there's no way someone is selling a $5 part with free shipping and not taking a hit. as much as I hate to admit it... I've taken a Haircut on a few items lately that were listed back when shipping was cheaper, and not updated to reflect current conditions.

If you are selling items that 30 other folks are selling the exact same item, there's a strong chance you are buying from the same supplier, and possibly competing with your supplier? that's a tough market, you need to try to buy smarter than the others if possible. and some low $ items just aren't worth trying to sell anymore.

That’s pretty much where I’ve landed too. It really depends on the item. On some products, I’ve raised the price slightly and on others, I absorb part of the cost.

I’ve also started using shipping rate tables so buyers in places like Alaska, Puerto Rico, and other non-contiguous U.S. locations pay a small additional amount. Unfortunately, shipping fees can turn buyers away, so I try to keep the visible charge as low as possible.

Low-priced items are definitely becoming harder to justify. Once you factor in shipping, fees, packaging, and returns, there may not be enough margin left to make the sale worthwhile

I would use calculated or raise prices a couple/three bucks to cover. The 'other' sellers will eventually do the same.

Unfortunately, shipping fees can turn buyers away, so we raised the prices by about a dollar and used shipping rate tables to add a small extra charge for places like Alaska, Puerto Rico, and other non-contiguous U.S. locations.

...and at the same time free shipping can turn buyers away...as I live in a state that doesn't tax shipping. If a buyer offers free shipping, then I'm paying tax on the "shipping" portion of the sale.

With more pricing chaos guaranteed in the future, you are better off switching to calculated. Just think of the sheer amount of time you will waste constantly repricing everything every time the postmaster changes price on a whim (which apparently he can do now.)

Basic math skills are necessary in order to work on cars. Your audience can take the base price and the shipping and figure out who is cheaper. If you were selling "Amazon items", "free" shipping might move the needle with that audience, maybe. With your audience, you will be fine using calculated.

That’s a fair point. Calculated shipping may be the only practical option now especially if USPS keeps changing rates. I’m just concerned the shipping charge will turn buyers away on lower-priced parts.

USPS pricing for under 1 lb. has gone up considerably. I have been

doing my best to get packaging costs down. I reuse packaging

material and have gained some acknowledge on cutting down

    boxes.

Fedex ground for light packages has had pricing reduced, but

service is not good. Fedex has some arrangement with USPS

to do final delivery, but my few uses of the arrangement have

not gone well. Fedex routes thru many of their offices (therefore slow).

You only know that USPS is doing final delivery from the printed

label with no other notfication. But then, Fedex can decide later

to deliver directly again with no notification. Remember, Fedex can

not put package in a mailbox.

That's been my experience too. USPS has always been the best option for our lightweight parts. FedEx Ground Economy hasn't been consistent enough for us especially when delivery gets handed off. I'm mainly trying to figure out how other sellers are adapting to these new USPS rates.

    Just going by the first 2 things I checked that you sell;

You are already NOT the cheapest (4 others shown right on your listing) you cannot afford to do anything except eat eat eat and/or get an account with Fedex (they are cheaper on shipping on small items).

That's exactly the challenge. We're already competing on price and with free shipping plus free returns in the Parts & Accessories category, there's not much room left to absorb additional shipping costs!

Many have suggested that you need to switch to calculated shipping rather than free shipping. While buyers "like" free shipping I am not sure they "expect" free shipping.

Of course, once you add a shipping cost your prices go way up for inexpensive items. As many are finding out, light, inexpensive items are very hard to move on ebay in this present climate unless you can group items together which in your case is probably not an option.

I agree but calculated shipping makes low cost items even harder to sell. Buyers see a $7–8 shipping charge on a $10 item and move on. That's why we've always offered free shipping. The recent USPS changes, combined with free returns, make that model much harder to sustain.

You are absolutely right. But all of as sellers have to make adjustments in this climate. Personally I probably won't be listing any lightweight inexpensive non collectibles.

Honestly, free shipping is a misnomer. Somehow the shipping has to be paid whether by the seller or the buyer. It is up to you how your business model needs to adjust.

I agree. Shipping is never really free, someone always pays for it. My concern is that in the Motors Parts & Accessories category we're also covering free return shipping, so between that and these new USPS costs, low priced items are becoming much harder to make work.

I think many, many sellers are beginning to realize this. And remember any returns can help with tax deductions at the end of the year.

If you switch to calculated ship, you'll be able to catch all the rural zip codes., while the non rural only increased slightly. With calculated shipping you have to be precise on your weights with the packaging materials or you may undercharge.

You may also want to give your buyers combined shipping discounts and / or offer promotional shipping ( buy 150 + and shipping is free) -- there's your free shipping! That will save you time from buyers constantly asking if you offer combined shipping. If none of that works for you, giving your buyers the ability to request an invoice for multiple items is nice - at that point you can decide how much you need to charge for shipping. This is all in Shipping Preferences and then you can establish different shipping policies in your Business Policies. Please feel free to DM me if you need help with these -- eBay made these hard to find and setting up is not intuitive.
