Advice on UPS Shipping Adjustment
I recently sold a golf clubs, and I shipped it via UPS Ground. The package was 3 lbs and the box in which it was sent measured 5x5x48, purchased directly from UPS.
I just received an adjustment for $47.90(!), with UPS saying that the measurements differ from the purchased shipping label. However, UPS’s tracking doesn’t list what measurements they recorded anywhere that I can find in the tracking info. Further, I’ve shipped literally dozens of golf clubs in this exact box, all weighing less than 3 lbs, never having had an issue. My only other poor experience was through FedEx 2-Day shipping, and I was refunded fully. I swore off FedEx after that.
Is there a streamlined way that I can appeal this through eBay? I have tried looking around the customer service page, but I am sent through a circuitous loop of AI agents. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Golf clubs are expensive to ship now, due to the length.

What dimensions did you enter when you bought the label?
I was able to confirm that the length of your box was determined to be 49 inches, not 48 inches. A box that is 48 inches long should be entered at 49 inches when shipping with UPS or FedEx. This is because the size printed on the outside is almost always the inner dimensions, so you cannot go by those numbers. There is no room for error with UPS or FedEx, because if it is over a whole inch by even 0.05", they will round up to the next whole inch. All it would take would be if the tape on one end loosed every so slightly, and their laser will catch it.
You can see the big difference here. If I were to ship a 5x5x48 inch 3LB package from Virginia to Los Angeles, it would cost about $15 with UPS Ground. If that package was 49 inches long, instead of 48 inches, it would be about $60 more. Be thankful you did not ship to Zone 8.

OP4 months agoThanks for the breakdown. This is so upsetting. I feel like there should be better, clearer education about this, or that UPS would sell boxes that are 46” or even just 47” instead. I actually cut my box down a little so that the club would fit more snugly, but apparently not enough.
As it stands, I don’t think I’m going to continue selling on ebay. Between the near-total migration to AI chat agents to shipping issues, the margins just aren’t there for me anymore.
Anyway, appreciate your detective work here.

If you can't make a profit, that's the bottom line. Only you can determine what is best for your business 🙂

·4 months agoYou need to file an appeal through ebay, they have a link to follow in the help section...you need to look that up. Also, you are hit with dimensional weight, probably 8-10#, and if that box went anything over 48" another surcharge as much as $20 or more. Fun stuff shipping with UPS on ebay

·4 months agoas far as I am aware the latest thing I was told is that unless the adjustment was $50 or more there not going to help you out, but that was a from a csr who are often not accurate. I would reach out and see if you get a different answer.
