Absolutely stupid eBay Shipping Label Calculations
I just tried to create a label for a 60 lb. package, measuring 32x32x20 to Manchester NH 03103-6012:
The UPS Ground cost is $221.53
If I REDUCE the dimensions: 60 lbs., 30x30x20 the cost INCREASES TO $292.38
Am I the only one who realizes how stupid this is?
I just recently had to request a refund for a $316.17 FedEx overcharge, which fortunately was approved. I had the correct weight and dimensions, but FedEx still tried to say it was overweight. Of course, now if I try to recreate the same label, it shows a FedEx cost of over $460 (my initial label cost was $153).
IF I PRINT AN EBAY LABEL, WHATEVER I AM CHARGED SHOULD BE THE TOTAL CHARGE. IF EBAY CAN'T SYNC THEIR LABEL COSTS TO FEDEX OR UPS, THIS IS EBAY'S FAULT!

·5 months agoJust had a USPS opposite problem. Buyer asked for a slightly higher than usual discount but I gave it to get the item sold. Turns out he asked for the discount because USPS was charging $69 where my cost was $19.

OP5 months agoI use the Reprint Label function on eBay to see how much it will cost to send large items to a Florida zip code (as I'm in California). The shipping cost I'm quoted should be factual, not a "guess" or a lie.

·5 months agoThe prices not syncing may or may not be ebay's fault.
Ebay can only go by what FedEx or UPS tells them as far as rates go.
Maybe FedEx and UPS are giving the correct rates to ebay but ebay is messing up?
Maybe ebay is being given the wrong rates by FedEx or UPS?
How do you know who's fault this is?

OP5 months agoSo, Mr. eBay Lead Cheerleader, it's just fine for eBay to quote a shipping cost and then pass any extra costs on to the seller? I can see why you are a cheerleader.

·5 months agoeBay is accurate with their USPS prices with the surcharges as long as it is entered correctly.
Them other two places on eBay, it is more like an introductory price to get you to use them but the real price may come later once they receive the package.
I would not purchase UPS or FedEx off of eBay because like you have learned "EBAY CAN'T SYNC THEIR LABEL COSTS TO FEDEX OR UPS"

·5 months agoGot to disagree about UPS or FedEx and ebay labels. I use them a lot for larger parcels and have yet to have "adjustments". But then I always add an inch to each dimension and several ounces to the weight.
That being said, there definitely is a glitch somewhere given the horror stories that have been related on these boards. But I really don't think it has anything to do with ebay labels.

·5 months agoMost problems I have are for larger items such as the OP is sending. I have also ran into similar issues where if I change the item dimensions to larger the price gets reduced. Never by that much but OPs items are a bit larger than what I ship. Anything more than about 25x25x25 and the price skyrockets.
Sometimes UPS and Fed Ex will make up their own "over size" charges if they feel the item was too bulky even if the item is well below their policy for over sized items. In my experience both Fed Ex and UPS stink now for large packages. Only bonus is with PIrateship you can print UPS, often get a better rate and third party insurance so you don't have to deal with UPS for claims.
Worst thing is the Fed Ex ebay calculated shipping issues which has been going on for years and has cost me a lot of money. The shipping is listed Fed Ex Home Delivery/Fed Ex Ground. They charge the customer the Fed Ex Home Delivery rate but when you print the label its changed to Fed Ex Ground (normally a business address or business district) and its 10-20% more.
I complained about it for years and even spent time with an ebay rep trying to rack our brains around the issue and figured out why it was happened and ebay refuses to refund the cost or fix the issue.
Example, list an item and pre-enter dimensions and weight of 40 lbs, 22x22x22 for calculated shipping Fed Ex. Customer buys item and is charged $70 for shipping. Without changing the pre entered dimensions when I print the label $85 is my price. So not only am I out 15% in ebay fees for the $70 my customer paid, I also have to cover the $15 out of pocket for the additional shipping cost. Not only did I not get enough to cover shipping I have to pay $25.50 out of pocket.
Normally when I type this you get people that will say just list one shipping price or build it into your item cost. These people obviously don't ship large/heavy items, in particular competitive ones. Shipping a large item can cost $40 to Maryland but over $110 to Oregon. Pricing the item at max shipping cost really scares away a lot of buyers.

·5 months agoYet is absolutely the key word. By using Fedex/UPS I am definitely at risk for those additional charges happening to me. That risk essentially doesn't exist with USPS.
On the other hand, if I were to use USPS for those parcels the shipping charges would be 2-4 times higher. So over time I have literally saved hundreds if not thousands of dollars in shipping charges by using them.
So if I do get an additional $100 charge sometime in the future, I am still way ahead.
