Your thoughts please
Buyer purchased an item April 20, received it April 24. She messaged me today that she gave the item to someone as a bridal shower gift but now she says a part is missing. (It’s a wedding themed toy) . I have been doing eBay since before the turn of the century and I have a way of packing things with multiple small pieces that’s worked fine for me all these years. I am 99.99999% sure that everything was packed since all the small pieces would be in the same plastic bag and she didn’t say anything else was missing. I went over my eBay area twice this morning and couldn’t find the missing piece. (I don’t take things out of that area and I don’t have small people in the house who might do so.) I have a feeling she’s looking for a price reduction. So selling experts, what would you do?

·2 months agoEven though you are 99.999% sure they it was not missing that piece, take what the buyer is saying as the truth. Ebay will.
Choice #1)
If you can both agree on a amount, offer a partial refund.
Some sellers refuse to give partial refunds but I will consider a partial refund if it will save me money vs. a return.
Choice #2)
Tell the buyer to return for a full refund. Pay for return shipping. Refund the buyer when you get the item back.
Do not try to fight this. You will lose. Ebay will force you to refund and let the buyer keep the item without having to return it.
Good luck.

OP2 months agoI’m thinking it might have been used as a table decoration and now they don’t need it anymore. Hmm

·2 months agoHeck yeah, that's exactly what happened. You should have free returns, that way you can withhold 50% of the refund if they send the item back in worse condition than you sent it, like missing parts for example, or missing the sealed packaging if it was a new item, etc.
eBay wants you to make returns as easy as possible for buyers because they are the cash cows. If you do what eBay wants, that's how you get seller protections like that withholding privilege, courtesy refunds for chargebacks, etc.

The wedding shower is over. They don't need it anymore.😎
Since you have "no returns" on your listing, the buyer probably knows that if they file a "Not as Described" claim and say a piece is missing, you will have to accept the return. If the buyer files a "Not as Described" claim, you will have to pay for the return of the item and upon your receipt of the item back, issue a refund. Or you can just issue a refund and let them keep the item.
You can put "no returns" on your listings but eBay's Money Back Guarantee trumps a seller's return policy and if a "Not as Described" claim is filed, a seller has to accept it.

·2 months agoWell if the buyer files a "Missing Parts" case against you they will be allowed to return the wedding themed toy to you within 30 days and you must issue a full refund upon return of the item. I would respond everything to this item was shipped to you. If you are not satisfied with the way it is right now return it.
Just a side note for you. If you tell them as-is no return then expect a negative feedback or a forced return anyway.

"I'm sorry you're not happy with your purchase. Please return it for a full refund. Thank you."
That's it. Nothing else.
