You ever had a buyer that is overly adamant they are right?
Summary: In the discussion titled "You ever had a buyer that is overly adamant they are right?", a participant shares their experience as a buyer dealing with a seller who accused them of swapping a damaged item for a new one they had ordered. Although the buyer initially left a negative review due to the seller's defensive attitude, they later retracted it after understanding that the seller genuinely believed the item was in perfect condition. The incident highlighted nuances in buyer-seller interactions where misunderstandings can arise from both sides being convinced of their truth.
Someone bought a new tractor starter, asked for dimensions beforehand, which I gave them.
I also, before shipping it, as I had a weird feeling they would be difficult, confirm with a local parts dealer the part number is correct for their tractor, which it was.
They tell me it won't fit, I look at the photos and the engine mounted mechanical fuel pump is not the right one, and is larger than the correct one, by about an inch in length and height, which is why the starter will not clear it to fit.
I told them this.
I provided dimensions from other places/manufacturers that are overlaid onto the photo of the starter, which are EXACTLY the same as the ones I provided the buyer originally.
The buyer's starter has been discontinued by the OEM for 2+ decades, and while it was smaller and cleared the pump, ALL of the new replacement ones are bigger as the original design was rather weak, but were engineered to fit if the buyer had the original pump, of which THOSE (aftermarket ones) are the same exact size, but this pump is off a completely different model of engine.
Know what I get in reply "I don't care what the dealer or the part numbers say, it won't fit."
Ok dude, have it your way. I accepted the return and maybe they will realize when they buy another one from another business, it too will not fit.
Luckily I can deduct from this return since it was in motors, because from their photos it looks like they tried to force it and is now probably scraped up.

·4 months agoThe buyer is not wrong, it does not fit.
The issue is whether it should fit.
The buyer did not want the information you provided, they wanted to return and refund.
You, similarly, wanted to make it clear that you were not wrong when you listed the item. And you agreed to the return and refund, but not until after you made it clear you would not admit to being wrong.
It may have been unpleasant, you and this buyer may share some personality traits that made it so.
It appears that the final result may be what it should have been, assuming the buyer was not overly offended by the interaction.

·4 months agoNot to dogpile on sellers, but being a buyer I’ve obviously seen more of this as well. Once got a damaged item (not from shipping) from something that was supposedly new. Mine was scratched and obviously not the one from the listing photos. Seller immediately accused me of swapping it out and trying to cheat her. First and only negative I ever gave out. I later retracted it after we exchanged a few messages as it was clear to me that she actually believed it was perfect brand new. She honestly deserved the negative for her initial response to me, but being a nice guy, I felt sorry for her. The point is she was dead certain her items were perfect and any complaining buyer is a thief and wrong on both counts.

·4 months agoYes I have had issues like this with buyers before on parts. What I tell them is exactly what you did which is return the part for a full refund. It's not worth arguing. This is all part of the business when selling parts. You are shipping a part online to a person who is a do it yourselfer.

I'm not sure I've ever had one that would admit they were wrong. LOL

OP4 months agoSometimes people are just not smart and need help. I'm always happy to help.
I sold an add-on cordless phone and put in the description it has to be programed to your base to work. They opened a return and I explained this, maybe they didn't see the description, and said thanks and closed it.
A few returns over my account history have been like that, and I'm sure some sellers don't provide any support, but I'd rather help them then see them send back something that just needs to be programmed, set up, etc.

·4 months agoIt seems like you have a good attitude when this situation arises by trying to help the buyer resolve the issue.
