Wrongful Offensive Material Removal — Need Supervisor Review
Summary: cncvending expressed frustration about the removal of their eBay listing for a German porcelain doll, which was mistakenly flagged as offensive material. They described an unsatisfactory interaction with a support agent and requested a supervisor review, stressing that the item does not fit the offensive criteria. Multiple participants advised letting the issue go, citing eBay's policies and suggesting it may not be worth the effort to fight the decision. Some participants shared similar experiences and opinions on eBay's handling of potentially offensive items, while others agreed or disagreed with the classification of the doll in question.
Subject: Escalation Request — Incorrect “Offensive Material” Removal & Unprofessional Support Interaction
I am requesting an immediate escalation and supervisor review regarding the removal of my listing (Item #336761858677) under the “Offensive Material” policy, and the conduct of the support agent I spoke with.
My listing was removed because your automated system flagged it as “Black Americana / Jim Crow caricature.” This classification is factually incorrect. The item is a small German porcelain doll with neutral facial features, no exaggerated proportions, no minstrel styling, and no historical or racist imagery. It does not meet any definition of Black Americana or Jim Crow caricature.
The only race‑related fields in the listing were required by eBay’s own item specifics form for dolls in this category. I simply answered the questions your system asked. I did not add any offensive language or descriptors.
When I contacted support, the agent insisted the doll “fit the criteria,” became rude when I explained the historical inaccuracy, and refused to escalate the issue. She told me to “call back” instead of transferring me to someone else. This was dismissive, unprofessional, and inappropriate — especially given the seriousness of being falsely accused of selling racist material.
I am requesting:
A supervisor review of the listing
Removal of the violation from my account
Confirmation that this takedown will not affect my seller standing
Review of the agent’s conduct and refusal to escalate
Correction of the automated filter that misclassified this item
Being falsely labeled as selling racist or offensive material is extremely serious and personally upsetting. I followed eBay’s rules, used eBay’s required fields, and even used eBay’s AI description tool. I should not be penalized for complying with your platform’s requirements.
Please escalate this immediately.
Thank you.

·1 month agoIt looks a little like an Ella Smith Alabama Baby doll. One of her dolls is on a USPS postage stamp called "American Dolls" The postage stamps and post cards are for sale here on eBay.

·1 month agoDid you use the term Black Americana in the listing title? If so, that was probably it, otherwise the bot wouldn't have even flagged it.

·1 month agoeBay's decision is no more than a cost/benefit analysis. There is no ideology here beyond that, and no possibility of arguing this point. You can probably sell that elsewhere on a more speciality site.

·1 month agoMy experience with offensive material removal policies on multiple internet marketplaces is that they are intentionally overly sensitive to the possibility of offending someone.
When selling on Ebay or any other online venue, I recognize the reality of how the policy is implemented, and use other ways of selling these significant pieces of our history.
There is no benefit to fighting a battle you cannot win. And there are many buyers for such merchandise including members of the group that some would claim was defamed.
There is a component of these policies which are based on image and PR which override any argument a seller can make.

·1 month agoWhile it may not have had a direct "Jim Crow" past, Germany certainly has a history of dehumanizing and caricaturing Black people.

This may be an issue of "not seeing the forest for the trees" -- while you have become comfortable with the image of this doll over the decades, new sets of eyes (particularly those of eBay) are looking at this item, and those new looks are negative.
Simply look at the lips: the lips are bright red, unlike any natural lips on ANY human being, much less a Black child.
Speaking of "black," the skin color of your doll is a very dark, exaggerated tone, which is NOT normal.
Finally -- the clothing worn by the doll is deliberately intended to associate the doll with plantation and/or sharecropping -- bib overalls with a sackcloth style shirt.
At first glance, I find your doll to be very offensive and racist.
There may be a market for your doll elsewhere -- just not on eBay.

There's definitely a market for this doll on eBay, judging from the active listings and solds.
Just not for this seller.

·1 month agoFirst, the people on these boards are buyers and sellers like yourself. There are no moderators or agents or supervisors here from eBay and no one here who can look at, review, or do anything about the removal of your listing. Most of us have had things removed that we do not agree with, but we accept it and move on.
You are fighting a losing battle. You can call your doll whatever you want and explain all you want but it is a Black Americana doll and they don't want it listed. You are arguing that it is German-made so that makes it not Black Americana, but that's kind of like putting lipstick on a pig - it's still a pig.
You said the CS agent became rude when you tried to explain the "historical accuracy" of the doll. The agents are usually pretty mild-mannered and only respond as they are responded to, i.e. if you were rude and insistent that you were right and she was wrong first, she replied in kind.
grann-4629
·1 month agoThe CS agent probably knows as much about history as they do about assisting members with problems ... not rude, just uneducated.

Yes, agents are uninformed and can't know about everything, but I was talking about the OP saying he tried to explain the "historical inaccuracy" to her and that he was right and she was wrong. I have a feeling, as much as he has argued his point here, that he gave that agent a run for her money. If she told him that it didn't matter because the item is still not allowed, he probably took that as being rude.

OP1 month agoI appreciate the responses, but I’m not looking for general opinions from other sellers. I am requesting moderator assistance because the Trust & Safety appeal was denied with a generic template that did not address any of the evidence I provided.
This item is a German porcelain doll with neutral features, not Black Americana, not a caricature, and not offensive material. The “Ethnicity” and “Complexion” fields were required by eBay’s item specifics form. The support agent refused escalation, and the appeal reviewer clearly did not evaluate the photos or context.
I am requesting that a moderator escalate this internally for a senior Trust & Safety review. This is a wrongful violation and needs manual correction.

·1 month agoThe moderators here are to moderate the boards. This isn't the place to argue this or get help, nor is there anything you or anyone can or will do to change the decision.

·1 month ago · EditedYou've already received a lot of "general opinions", which is what this board is for, and they have been to LET IT GO. The moderators of the board have no ability or authority from eBay to help you.
This is not a hill you want to die on. When eBay pulls an item for whatever reason, accept it and LET IT GO, unless you want to pursue it to your own detriment with excessive, unnecessary anxiety.
You won't win this one... LET IT GO and get on with life. Sell it elsewhere if you can.
Cheers, Duffy

·1 month ago · EditedI don't think that moderators take care of such issues. But, we did have a guy that works for an eBay seller indicate that moderators take care of site bugs. I don't believe that, but that is what has been floated, so I really don't know.

If ebay says it's offensive, they have the final say.
It doesn't matter what you think or feel.

·1 month agoIt's probably best to just let this one go, it's already been pulled. No need to present evidence, there is no courtroom here. We are fellow ebayers.
It's just one item, let it go. There items that are touchy to many people for many reasons. You can't see why with this one? And you're throwing it online? And wanting to fight to try again?
Sell other things...

OP1 month agoPaste that image in search and scroll through the hundreds of the exact same German Bisque doll. Can you see why I am throwing it online and want to fight. If everyone just lets it go and moves on then change will never happen. I am fighting the AI responses looking for a human with common sense and reason to respond. This was my grandmother's doll, my daughter played with 20 years ago. No one in my family or ethnicity ever had a problem with it. Yes, my daughter had blonde hair Barbies too. Amazingly they sold no problem.

·1 month ago · EditedI understand what you are doing – it is a noble pursuit. But changes isn’t going to come from eBay – they are a reflection of some small subset of society and their aversion to seeing anything related to black Americana. Me, I don’t see anything wrong with this doll, and I don’t think that you are a racist for listing it. I think it is a bit silly that eBay bans these things – it isn’t their job to save people from being offended by something. Being offended as a choice – I don’t really understand the need to ban things that aren’t illegal. That’s just me. I wouldn’t relist it – it is just asking for problems.

I don't know what is more amusing - fighting AI or believing that there is a human with common sense at the end of this rabbit hole.
I completely get the frustration of dealing with rigid AI responses. But honestly, chasing common sense down this online rabbit hole will just drain your energy. The reality is that items from that era get viewed through a completely different lens today, regardless of their original intent. Save your peace of mind and don't let the internet bots get to you—life is definitely too short for that fight.
grann-4629
·1 month agoYou can't see why with this one?
I can't see why either. If it has to do with history or mistreatment of people in the past, why is eBay trying to pretend it never happened? Why are people getting upset with things they had nothing to do with and have no responsibility to fix?
It's a very cute doll regardless of the skin colour or clothing.
btw, are things related to the current POTUS banned for the same reasons?
