Would you sell a usd 5000 object?
Read about problems around claims and not getting payed ...
That makes me (honest seller) a little hesitant.
Would you dare to sell a usd/eur 5000 object?
And if so. Under what conditions would you do that?

·2 years agoI would do it in a minute, I have never sold a single $5,000 item but have sold $3,000 single items and 2-3 K orders are not that uncommon, I sell mostly industrial type items and while it could happen it is a very low fraud category.

·2 years agoI wouldn't sell it here. When I have valuable collections I break them into pieces to make sure I don't have anything more than about $500. (And even then, I'll only sell something for $500 if the cost is super low and I can take a hit if it goes south... which has actually happened on a $500 sale. Thankfully the coin was Arabic and no one at the store could read it, so it ended up in the junk bin... too bad I didn't get to keep the profits).

·2 years agoProbably been said before and will be again but .... "Heck no". I stopped selling anything here at all. If the platform isn't abusing sellers, scammers are, and high-dollar items are magnets. When it comes to high-value items, it's local auction house only or cash and carry. If you have to, look at auction houses elsewhere in the Eurozone.

I would not be comfortable listing an item for $5000.
I have a few valuable items (around that amount) that I had always hoped to sell someday on Ebay. But that was some years ago when I felt that way. The scammers are so bad now. Yes there were always scammers, but there are more now and more sophisticated ones. I wouldn't want to lose those items to a scammer.
I sold some vintage Louis Vuitton handbags a few years ago, for around $250 each & that worried me, until it all cleared. But I'm definitely not cut out to sell a $5000 item on Ebay. I know it can be problematic to figure out what to do with some of these valuable things.

·2 years agoNo, because anyone can "reverse payment" AFTER they receive your item. EBAY will NOT protect you if you get scammed.

·2 years agoA long time ago I would consider selling a used item in that price range, and I did occasionally sell items over a 1000 dollars here back then, but no way would I do that today. Nowadays, any time I get something to sell that's worth anything over $500 it goes straight to my favorite brick and mortar auction house that offers in-house bidding and also online bidding. Not only do I always feel I get as much in my pocket there as I would here, but there is no stress or time involved with photos, descriptions, INADs, returns, or anything. Drop it off at the auction house and they do the rest, and there are no returns to worry about.

Need to find one which wants. Big ones didn't want. Small ones have a local market. I need ww market.

·2 years agoYou mentioned Sotheby's and Christies don't want your item because it's too low. Forget about them unless you have something worth 50k or 100k. Your 5K item belongs in an auction house that loves to accept consignments worth that much while at the same time they aren't looking for consignments worth only a couple hundred bucks. I didn't realize until now that you're from the Netherlands. Here in the US there are plenty of auction houses that offer in-house bidding as well as world wide online bidding. Anyway, if you sell it on eBay, do what krazzykat and reallynicestamps said.

However, depending on the category, I would consider selling items that expensive, because I sell in a "handshake" category where there few problems with scamming, and a long-standing (centuries!) system of authentication.
I am also very aware of shipping* standards.
I would never consider anything that appeals to the "criminal demographic" (males between 15-35, usually unmarried).
And there are some categories so rife with fraud (designer purses, horse tack, gemstones, antique dolls) that it is not worthwhile even trying.
I would also consider using Local Pickup and demanding cash payment, but that makes using the international coverage of eBay rather pointless.
*We once had a $15,000 item misdirected from Moscow, Idaho to Moscow, Russia, and returned safely, after a nerve wracking delay when tracking was invisible, because of the service and the packaging used. (Not an eBay sale.)

Unless you are selling regularly, your FB shows you to scammers as a newbie.
And a target.
But I agree, the reason you are a newbie and the reason you would be a target is that eBay has changed over and over.
Two thoughts.
Would you consider shipping internationally by listing on the UK site, which does offer GSP/eIS a program set up by eBay as a Seller Protection?
A nice day trip on the ferry and drop off your item at the nearest post office to the ferry dock.
Also depending on the item, we have has some success with philatelic material on DelCampe Auctions in Italy. There are also some internationally recognized auction houses in Germany that might be interested, but I am only peripherally aware of them.
Frankly after the "ringing "mess some years ago, I would not trust either of the two you mentioned as a seller.

·2 years agoI would have no problem selling a watch for 5000 and shipping it to the authenticator. I have two pieces listed for more that that now.
I dont see what the big deal is. my friends who also sell watches will ship it out of the country but I am not going to do that.
it all depends on your aversion to risk.I woud never insure a watch under 500 since there is little risk in shipping a $500 watch

·2 years agoNot a chance. The odds of you being scammed are incredibly high with a high dollar item. I've been selling since 2008, have a couple thousand feedback, so I am experienced here and there isn't a snowball's chance that I would sell a $5K item here now.

·2 years agoWhether I would feel safe selling a $5k or Euro5k item would depend on what that item is, and who is likely to buy it.
There are many items I would not sell on Ebay at far lower prices because they are easily sold to fences, and attract low ethics buyers.
There are others that I will sell because they are not easily resold, easily identified by law enforcement if they are sold on other online marketplaces, and usually sold to people who want to own and keep them.
There are buyers in all countries who you do not want to sell to, and if you do not know the buyers for the item, and are a novice at selling online, and a low volume seller you want to sell eyeball to eyeball for cash.

A re-starter i am on ebay. A lot changed since 10-15 years ago.
I'm taking about a rare original object. Hardly ever for sale and only to find in museums or in information about this object and Unesco description.
But where to sell such item then? That payment sh. you read about all sites.
Informed at real auctions, but for them objects below 10K aren't interesting they said.

·2 years agoCompose more of an ad on eBay. Cash only on pickup or some kind of funds that can't be withdrawn back. Use eBay's OCR system for pickup. I advertise things for pickup that are too large to ship, but if it's rare and highly desirable then I want cash.
I wouldn't sell anything you can't afford to lose without some kind of insurances and reassurances.

If you don't agree with making a listing more of an ad for something like this, do you have a better idea for safely selling this rare item? The only safe way to sell this item is verifiable cash in hand.

NO...not now, not ever. It's scam city out there and the scammers are everywhere in all walks of life looking to rob you. Never sell anything you can't afford to lose. JMO. Don't do it.

·2 years agoWhat is usd/eur 5000? Is that five thousand dollars? And I see you are in the Netherlands, so is that 5000 of whatever the currency is used in your country? It might help for you to return and offer better details.
But, speaking personally, no, I would not sell a five thousand dollar item on eBay.

You may choose if you want to read usd or eur(o) before the 5000.
The difference between both currencies is that small that it keeps the question relevant.

You haven't told us what the item is. For example... a wristwatch might be best consigned with a jeweler, while a china buffet might be best advertised locally for Pick Up only.

·2 years agoWhat the item is is also relevant. Some items attract mostly scammers (such as smartphones, laptops and gaming systems) while others may be (relatively) safe (e.g. artworks or niche items). It would help if you can tell us what it is you hope to sell. For example, large or heavy items should be Local Pickup Only, and preferably for cash.
