winter is coming
Summary — Is it short-sighted?
In many respects, yes:
âœ”ï¸ Protects eBay’s own business model and legal position.
âœ”ï¸ Ensures human decision-making remains central to transactions.
⌠Limits innovation and buyer discovery at a time when AI agents are becoming mainstream.
⌠Could reduce external visibility and relevance.
⌠Feels reactive rather than forward-looking compared to platforms embracing AI commerce tools.
It’s not a Google search ranking disaster, but it echoes the same sort of platform self-inflicted bottleneck: if eBay’s policies push buyers and developers away rather than innovate with them, it may lose ground in future shopping ecosystems.

·8 months ago@forgottenape OK, so I'll take a guess: You asked AI to give you the pros and cons of ebay's recent User Agreement change regarding AI and bots, and you posted the results without providing us with any context for your post whatsoever. Would that be right?
And I would note, the change does limit AI , but also says it prohibits scraping, bots etc from doing their thing without ebay's permission.
Which leaves open the possibility that ebay is not closing the door completely, it's just going to charge admission rather than give entry away for free.

Am I showing my age for knowing that song?
