Winter 2025 Seller Check In
What's everyone's favorite part of the Winter Seller Check In so far?
Personally, I really liked the part where they "introduced" the Listing Quality Report.....again. 😂
I've lost count, but I think this is now at least the 3rd (maybe 4th?) relaunch. Maybe this time it will mean all the people who have never had it since it really launched in 2021, or who had it and lost it, will finally be gaining access.

OP11 months agoThe announcement about the new General Manager has finally been posted:

·11 months ago@valueaddedresource Well, after nearly 30 years on ebay myself, what I hear when I read that is an adult speaking in a Charlie Brown special : Whaaaa-whaaa-whaa whaaa-whaaa-whaa.
We've heard it all before.
I would love to feel optimistic about this, but I feel more like Rocky as Bullwinkle says
"Hey Rocky, Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!"
"Again?"
"ROAR!"
"Hmmm.... wrong hat."
But, OK, I hope Ron actually does pull the rabbit out of his hat. LOL
(And note: Of course, no actual date as to when the Q&A sessions will begin, or any other information about them)

OP11 months agoA timely tale about the accuracy and usefulness of eBay provided data since they said they are working on bringing more of the information from the Listing Quality Report into Seller Hub and the app as suggestions/recommendations:
A seller just sent me these screenshots, with permission to share them publicly - they got an email "nudge" about an item that hadn't had a sale in over 90 days, suggesting to lower the price because supposedly the median price was a whopping $631.46 less than theirs.
When clicking the helpful "edit this listing" button in the email, the first thing that becomes clear is that apparently eBay does not take into consideration that the fact this item has been out of stock with a QTY of 0 for several months may be the real reason it hasn't sold - but then curiously, it does also suggest that the medium sold price for this item is $35.99.
If the seller clicks "see similar listings" to try to figure out where that ridiculously low price came from...well it's not them, it's eBay.
Doing a search for current active listings for that part number show prices in the $562-$697 range, so if this seller were to get more in stock today, their price certainly wouldn't be the cheapest but would not need to be reduced by over $600 to be competitive.
Again that's not to say no data from eBay should ever be trusted but....probably not a bad idea to keep some of the egregious examples like this in the back of your mind and to remember that there might be smaller, less obvious errors or inconsistencies too. 😂

·11 months ago@valueaddedresource And the same caution applies to ebay's helpful pricing suggestions within the listing tool. I just listed a 17" tall garden gnome, and ebay's suggested price showed me what others are pricing it for....many of the items were 4" tall pixies, etc.
So, sure, take a quick look because sometimes ebay's suggestions CAN save you time. But never ASSUME they are anywhere near accurate. (This cautionary note also applies to anything ChatGPT and most other AI tools provide.)

I get absurd pricing suggestions as well in the Book categories whenever Im listing a book that is signed by the author or a first edition. I learned to ignore their suggestions but I can not help but think that that listing is going to be punished within eBays default search results based on the large margin of difference between their suggested price and my price.

·11 months agoI concur an answer would be appreciated.........
But just a caution: Posting anything in the picture space that is date/shipping specific could be a pain if the item doesn't sell this year. I know descriptions can be bulk edited, but pictures?

OP11 months ago@my-cottage-books-and-antiques call me very skeptical on that kind of exact correlation between what's said in the report and what is actually going on with the search algorithm. 😂
A.) For a variety of reasons, I don't believe eBay would ever truly be that direct, candid, transparent and precisely detailed about what "the search engine looks for".
B.) It wouldn't be the first time I've heard of the reps for those account review/growth calls playing just as fast and loose with information/telling people what they want to hear as regular customer service reps, even if it means giving completely wrong answers.
Just as one example: this reddit post relaying info a seller was told in one of those calls that (apparently) included just absolutely false and misleading information about how impressions are counted.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Flipping/comments/1ocoax6/attended_a_seller_clinic_today_from_ebay/
I'm not saying I think number of pictures isn't possibly a factor in search or that sellers shouldn't consider increasing them if the LQR suggests to do so - but I would definitely say to take anything you hear from eBay in a seller clinic call with a very large grain of salt.
valueaddedresource
OP11 months agoThe number one thing I would tell sellers who are just now getting access to the Listing Quality Report is to remember that "correlation does not imply causation."
This report basically just shows certain stats for the top 10% and the bottom 10% of sellers in a category, then shows you were you rank against those groups for those stats.
That does not necessarily mean that the stats being shown are the reason why those sellers are in the top or bottom 10%.
For example, the report might suggest for you to add more photos because you average 4 photos per listing and the top 10% of sellers in that category average 6 photos.
Now, it's possible (and likely) that photo count might influence search rank, clickthrough and sales to some degree but just looking at that stat in isolation may not be particularly helpful because it's also possible that top 10% is in the top due to other factors and the number of photos either doesn't really matter or maybe just doesn't carry as much weight as other factors might.
And from that it follows that simply increasing the number of photos in your listings would not be guaranteed to move you into the top 10% just because this report suggested it - and the same is true for most of the data points in the LQR.
That's not to say the report can't be useful. I've just seen some sellers put too much emphasis on chasing the stats and being disappointed in the ROI for those efforts.
my-cottage-books-and-antiques
·11 months ago@valueaddedresource Good point. However, just recently I saw someone say that they had one of those account reviews and it seems they were pretty much told If the LQR suggests 7 photos and you have 5, add 2 more...it will boost you in search. In other words, she was told that if ebay is suggesting 7, it means : The search engine looks for 7, and fewer photos lowers your standing.
Now, of course, even if this is true, the photo count is obviously only one factor in a listing's search rank, and so even if you change all your listings to the preferred number, it might not make much difference if your listings do not do well with other factors.
I've also seen at least one ebay seller say that if she's one photo short, she simply inserts an image of her store logo. And she claims ebay told her that was fine.
So, as usual, I think we've got conflicting information from ebay itself.
BTW, for the Holiday season, I've seen sellers recommending an image showing your shipping cutoff dates...which is not a bad idea, BUT
@devon@ebay can we get some clarity on this? I thought ebay required that photos only show the item, and a photo that didn't show the item was not permitted? But is it "ebay legal" for me to include a graphic reminding buyers of shipping cutoff dates?

·11 months agoImages, videos and text policy on eBay
I would think it should be fine as long as the picture only includes the hours and nothing else.

my-cottage-books-and-antiques
·11 months ago@krazzykats Thanks. I'd still like to hear from @devon@ebay on this specific question.
I just looked at another Help Page, and thought this was an interesting change (I believe it is a change):
This is not found under prohibited actions, but is more in the way of a tip or best practice:
https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/listings/adding-pictures-listings?id=4148&st=3&pos=4&query=Adding%20pictures%20to%20your%20listings&intent=listing%20watermarks&lucenceai=lucenceai&docId=HELP1031
So, it seems ebay has finally acknowledged reality ---many, many sellers, including large sellers of electronics and so forth---include text and so forth in their item photos , which at one time was prohibited. Now, it seems, ebay does not prohibit all text outright, but recommends against it because it "can effect your listing's placement in search results"
valueaddedresource
OP11 months ago@my-cottage-books-and-antiques looks like this was changed sometime in January 2025, the previous version from December 2024 said "Don’t overlay text such as “Free postage†or seller logos. That kind of information should go in the title, subtitle, or item description"
https://web.archive.org/web/20250125070024/https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/listings/adding-pictures-listings?id=4148
my-cottage-books-and-antiques
·11 months ago@valueaddedresource Interestingly, "Bert"---the former ebay UK employee who was providing advice on YouTube for a while, actually recommended using text etc and acknowledged it was technically a rule violation, but suggested ebay didn't really enforce the rule anyway. So it seems like ebay just accepted reality and decided to use language designed to discourage the practice, but not to prohibit it.
I do wonder if this was one of those things Google Shopping didn't like, so ebay prohibited it, and maybe Google Shopping accepts it now. Or ebay only submit the images without the text (or even strips it out....seems to me this might have been mentioned during Open?
But I'd still like to get some clarity from @devon@ebay on the question of posting something like a Shipping Cutoff graphic (And yes, I know ebay itself might post something in the shipping area of the listing, but that's based on carrier deadlines. Some sellers choose an earlier cut off date than the carriers provide)

·11 months agoI can think of one reason eBay would want to minimize the number of listings whose photos tie into the seller's identity. In the arrangement they have with this liquidator in Michigan (who may not be the only one, but this one alone has 27K current listings) they not only get the non-forwardable (and maybe returned?) items from the EIS hub, they also get all the data from the original sellers' listings. And they just post those photos and even seller descriptions, priced a bit higher than the original sale price, at least at first. I know because I've seen a couple of my own non-forwardable items for sale there -sure freaked me out the first time, ha!! I've also purchased from them several times, and it looks like they don't even open the packages, just slap the new shipping label over the old one. So any invoices, thank-you cards, etc. from the original seller are in there!

I would imagine once a while this results in negative feedback just like with buyers who don't appreciate receiving Amazon dropshipped items, but I bet these guys have an arrangement with eBay for that too, ha. But as for the listing photos, that would be a whole other matter; any incongruent 'fishiness' there could stop a sale from happening in the first place.

·11 months agoYou just need an app that can open an Excel file. On your Mac, Numbers is a good option and is free on the App Store, or you can import it online into Google Sheets.

·11 months agoIs this the one? It says it's to "create" spreadsheets, but it could read them too? Unfortunately my Mac is too old according to what it says there. My OS is Catalina 10.15.7 and I cannot update beyond that.

jonathanbrightlight
·11 months agoYes, that’s the one. I thought it was supposed to offer you an older version of the app if you couldn’t run the latest, but maybe that’s only if you previously had it. Google Sheets may be your best option. There’s also a free app called LibreOffice, but it’s definitely clunkier. Microsoft Office (which includes Excel) is probably an option too, though I don’t know if it’ll run on Catalina, but of course that is paid and not particularly cheap.

·11 months agoI think this is a very valid point. Reviews and likes are not always what they seem. I don't think feedback is all it is cracked up to be for many years. In fact, my opinion for years is that feedback needs to be abolished completely. They waste so much time on it and the various changes it has gone through for the last 27 years is ridiculous.
I do think that many of us that have been around for a long time have a different attitude about what constitutes good feedback or a "run!!!!!" percentage of feedback. Perhaps younger users have one opinion, while older users have another. Certainly, what you sell can matter. That has always been true. Certain products are more problematic than others.
When all feedback counted, perhaps a low score was more a sign of bad things. But remember, that was when buyers left more feedback, eBay gave away stickers and stars and even a shooting star jacket.
Now only 30% of buyers leave feedback and they only use the current 12 months to determine a percentage. Small sellers can easily see a big drop in their percentages with one "knee jerk reaction" buyer with a chip on their shoulder.
Not only that, but with eBay's new policy regarding removing feedback, experienced users know how to file to have a feedback removed, file an appeal, reach out to social media, or contact their account manager.
New users, smaller sellers and occasional sellers don't always have that option or knowledge.
eBay just can't decide what they want feedback to be and this website is not really like other websites that have product reviews and warehouses and 1 day delivery and free returns.
Buyers are upset when it takes 5 days to arrive when the seller has done everything that they can.
The last few changes have not changed my opinion. Do away with feedback altogether.

OP11 months agoI'll be 44 next week, so I guess I just barely squeak by someone's arbitrary intelligence threshold.
That being said, I honestly don't care about 100% FB either and, at least in some cases, I might also be inclined to see it as slightly sketchy, especially because I've been around here for things like the Great Reebok FeedBack Scrubbing Fiasco of 2019. 😂
Maybe "kids these days" are just less naive about all of the ways that online appearances and ratings can be faked and manipulated and maybe that's not always a bad thing - in fact if one were to look at fraud trends, one might even suggest some boomers could learn a thing or two from the young whipper snappers about healthy skepticism and not always believing what you see on the interwebs, especially if it seems too good to be true.
my-cottage-books-and-antiques
·11 months ago@valueaddedresource Yeah, I admit I was actually less interested in the feedback thing itself, and more interested in the fact that ebay obviously has data that shows differences in buyer expectations and attitudes based on generation....which is not in itself surprising, I'm sure most companies do....I just think it might make for an interesting presentation at the next Seller Check In. Feedback can't be the only thing where there are differences. ebay has done this sort of thing in the past, usually with a consultant giving the presentation.
I am old. I grew up in a world that really doesn't exist anymore, and it is easy for me to forget that people growing up with a smart phone in their hand since very nearly their cradle days....they are almost bound to have some very different viewpoints about things. And that includes online shopping.
My guess is many of my buyers are not particularly young (although I'd guess there are exceptions). Still, it might be useful to know what sort of expectations younger buyers have compared to older buyers.

my-cottage-books-and-antiques
·11 months agoOne thing to remember with the LQR and Google Shopping.
IF I understand correctly, ebay is only showing you the reason Google gave for rejecting a submission. BUT if ebay does not submit your items in the first place, ebay does not provide the reason for not submitting your item(s).
Your items can't get rejected by Google if they have never been sent to Google to begin with.

·11 months agoExcept for the photos, it's basically pushing the same things the site is always pushing - "free" shipping and use best offer. Mine did not show one-day handling, though.
gurlcat
·11 months agoI don't think I'll ever go with "free" shipping, but I'm thinking of trying flat rate. Someone said recently that google only publishes listings with flat rate or free, and now I think it must be true, because I can see (in aqua) the exact day I posted 3 listings with flat rate shipping (because they were in Priority flat rate packages), but I could figure out a 'middle' flat price for my little 3-ounce single items too. It wouldn't kill me to slightly undercharge a few buyers and overcharge a few others, I guess.

chapeau-noir
·11 months agoI charge capped flat rate because of where I live - the population spread makes shipping expensive. ·11 months agoHere's an interesting little bit: According to the presenters in Networking Session: Managing Holiday Inventory and Shipping, ebay execs recently told them that many in the under 40 crowd actually find 100% Feedback "sketchy". They are used to things like Yelp reviews, where almost no one ever gets all positive type feedback, and so if they see 100% positive, they assume the feedback has been scrubbed or manipulated., and they actually trust the seller LESS.
Make of that what you will.
kickin.assets
·11 months ago@my-cottage-books-and-antiques
Well then call me one of those “sketchy†sellers. 😂
Thankfully I don’t believe 99.9% of what I hear … especially when it starts with “We were told by …†or “I heard from …â€
Interestingly enough, I get some of my best feedback from that “under 40†crowd you mentioned.
ðŸ˜
chapeau-noir
·11 months agoI don't, either, particularly since most of these 'polls' or 'told by' or 'heard from' are from a pretty narrow sector of people. Some may, some may not, but I'm not sure I really need to deal with people with that level of suspicion and semi-paranoia, particularly since they don't sound knowledgeable enough to understand that negs/neuts fall off feedback after a year so few really have 'perfect' feedback, anyway.
gurlcat
·11 months agoI doubt there are many who would absolutely not buy from a 100% pos seller, but if they're comparing multiple listings of the same item they might just trust the one whose feedback shows they can get a neg and have it stick. But yeah a lot of them probably don't fully understand how feedback works on eBay in particular (we see a lot of sellers here who don't either). As for paranoid people, I think they're so ubiquitous nowadays you probably deal with them all the time without knowing it, because you don't do anything that affirms their suspicions and triggers their anger. Kinda like how you might not walk in the woods if you had any idea how many rattlesnakes are in it, but you'll be fine if you stay on the path and keep your eyes and ears open.
EDIT: As for the "poll" from what Liz described it might not have even been a formal poll. So, eBay execs told the presenters that "many" in the under 40 crowd said .......
Yeah talk about sketchy. Ha, would it be shocking if they just made it up, to try to pre-cushion the blow for some sellers who've maintained 100% for years but may run into their first unshakable neg in the near future, what with the policy changes? Not to say I intuited it; I've just seen plenty of buyers say it outright, in threads in the Buyers forum. Just think of any buyer who's ever observed their own negative feedback get erased and the seller had no other negs ... who could blame them for thinking that seller has special privilege with eBay? It was literally a concierge benefit for a long time, and of course the auto removal for free return listings just ended a few weeks ago!
