·1 year agoIf I haven't shipped the item yet, I don't have a problem cancelling an order. Most of the time, when I get a request to cancel, it's within just a few minutes of their order. Sometimes I even get the request to cancel BEFORE I get the notification that I've sold an item. I try to respond right away because I know there's someone on the other end "freaking out" and hoping it's not to late to cancel.
If I've already shipped it, I can't cancel it.
If I've already created a label but still have the package, I will cancel it, but it DOES INVOLVE a little bit of work for me because I've already printed the packing slip, packed the item, printed a shipping label and sealed the box. Then it has to be unboxed, the packing slip removed, and the shipping label voided (plus getting money back on voided shipping labels can take a while). That doesn't happen very often, fortunately.

·1 year agoMaybe the seller packed your order right away, put in their mail box on the way to work. It would have got scanned when the mail man came and got out of mail box. Seller wouldn't have even read your email until they got home from work.

·1 year agoGot me. Since the buyer can return it on the seller's dime just be saying three magic words. Not as described. Some might use an automated shipping service and can't stop the process.

·1 year agoPer your feedback you're assuming that the seller handed the package to the counter rep to get the scan. My, and many other post offices have a bin for packages with prepaid postage. Those bins are emptied either once or twice a day and MAY be scanned at that time (or it may wait until they have some free time during the day).
Also - did you go through the official "request to cancel" option or did you just request it via messages? The window for using the official option is very small. And messages/requests may not immediately show up on the seller's side - especially if they are out taking care of errands and things and they are not sitting in front of a computer waiting to see if someone wants to cancel something that a seller rightly assumes the buyer wanted. Especially since as a buyer you have to click several times committing to the purchase.

·1 year agoWhy do buyers buy things that they do not want ðŸ˜
ETA: I had one yesterday. happened in the wee hours, so it was quite some time before I took care of it, but right after the ID was added to my BBL, ..................... I promptly cancelled per the request.
ETA: BRB. have something to do.
ETA: OK, back. Got that taken care of.

I've requested to cancel an order before, and I don't think it's so unusual as to wonder why it happens.
In my case, it was a tool I realized I already had in the garage just a few minutes after placing the order.
The seller canceled it for me because he had not yet shipped.
This whole thread is much ado about nothing, IMO, based on a histrionic buyer.

·1 year ago@leslihalber-0 The FB you left, WOW!
You have left 2 FBs, 1 neutral and 1 negative.
You called the seller a liar and told people to look at the timeline.
No one can see the timeline but you and the seller.
Calling people names and coming across as entitled is not very adult.

·1 year agoPerhaps pathetic, however you might look at how eBay treats the Seller when it comes to cancelling an order. Let's say the item you bought sold for $500 and you paid. You changed you mind and want to cancel. Great, however for the Sell not so great. The money you paid will not hit the Seller bank for up to a week depending on what payout plans they are on. When you cancel and the Seller accepts eBay will take funds from the Sellers current payout that they might get the next day. So the eBay system stops the Seller from using $500 for up to a week. This is why a smart Seller will wait til the money you have paid hits their bank account. If a Seller had too many cancellations its possible eBay could take the cash required to allow the Sellers business to operate. The eBay platform is a highly inexact science. It is not gear to help either the Buyer or Seller. It is gears for eBay to acquire or hold onto as much of the Buyer and Seller funds for as long as they can.

·1 year agoDo you mean wait before refunding or wait before shipping?
allthingssurplus
·1 year agoWait for Buyers payment to hit Sellers bank account and then Refund the Buyer.
albertabrightalberta
·1 year agoI don't think that's good advice.
A seller's attempt to "punish" the buyer by waiting for funds to transfer before accepting the cancellation request will come back to bite the seller with a late shipping ding.

I think in this instance, only the OP @leslihalber-0 can tell us why after two hours they changed their mind.

·1 year agoHi, Although it is not mandatory - From here in New Jersey we will always cancel an order at our buyers request. The only time that we cannot cancel a sale is when the item has already been taken to the Post Office. When this happens, we will suggest that our buyer to accept the item & file a return request which we well honor. We think that this is just good business and may secure for us a future customer. ·1 year agoBelow is the feedback you left for the seller. What if the seller did not see your request and was out doing errands while dropping it off at the post office? Sometimes postal scans are not exactly accurate if they did not scan it when it was dropped off. (in bin) To be honest, it does seem like you are overreacting especially since you did cause the initial error. If the seller responded to you and said, no i am going to ship it out, that is a different story and not wise for the seller to do so. (not required but can be problematic)
negative feedback left.
I Contacted the Seller a couple hours after making purchase. Around 8:30am, I requested to cancel order, the Seller Refused to do that and Shipped anyway. Look at the timeline!!!! I will prove the seller is a liar. The package was dropped off at 10:25am, Two (2) hours AFTER MY REQUEST TO CANCEL!!!!

·1 year agoBeen there, done that, with pretty much the same timeline as in that feedback. It's disheartening when instead of an expected pat on the head for a fast posting you get a chop to the throat instead.

·1 year agoSo, once you get the item you wanted to cancel, just open a return request for a full refund
sea.n.van._60
·1 year agoThe problem with refusing to accept a cancellation is that buyers can damage the item and claim it was damaged in transit/received damage and return it anyway. Then the seller has lost the cost of postage in both directions plus the item. I always accept cancellations if they come in time (they usually do).
ittybitnot
·1 year agoif they come in time (they usually do).
@sea.n.van._60
While your post makes perfect sense, but what if they don't come on time? I believe there are time restraints for when a buyer can make a formal request, but they can also do it in messages after the fact. How long is a seller expected to wait around in case the buyer changes their mind and no longer wants the product? In message #3 the poster @albertabrightalberta provided excellent information.

·1 year agoIf the cancellation comes too late then I apologise and explain that it has already been dispatched. I dispatch orders same-day and will not hold items and ruin my metrics on the off chance of a cancellation and eBay and 99% of buyers no doubt prefer it that way.
itsjustasprain
·1 year agoI think it is 60 minutes. Ebay sent out an announcement about the latest cancellation process sometime in the past year if I remember right.
It is definitely easier to cancel before the buyer has paid than after because refund payments must come from the seller and not from the actual funds that the buyer sent to Ebay (and being processed by Adyen).

·1 year agoSome sellers are desperate for sells and they'll take anything.
And sellers are not required to respond to messages or cancel orders.
chevymontecarlo88
·1 year agoThis is a great point about desperate sellers or those sellers who don't understand how buyers can mis use MBG to force sellers to pay for returns. It is not worth it. Cancel, relist and move on.
Mistakes do happen on both sides (buyers/sellers), so it makes no sense to force anything on to someone regardless of the rules set by eBay.

·1 year agoI know some sellers are automated and it's hard for them to cancel orders.
But the others, if it hasn't shipped, I cancel and save the trouble later.
toomuchstuffagain35
·1 year agoSales can be hard to come by these days. Maybe they're just tired of buyers who don't bother to think it through or shop around before they 'buy' something then cancel?
And fwiw - it's a REQUEST to cancel.

Hey, someone wants to cancel a purchase, I just hit the "I agree" button and the item simply relists.
Then I go back to beneficial work like listing more stuff. Keep the emotion out of it folks! This is business!
albertabrightalberta
·1 year agoThat's not my point! I do cancel for buyers who request a cancellation. But I was just explaining to @leslihalber-0 why some sellers might not be able to do so and the simple fact that they don't have to cancel!
Sheesh!

·1 year agoDoes not appear that the post was a reply to your post😊
It was not a "response" to you, and no reference to anything that you posted.
Reading it, I took it as a direct reply to the OP.

·1 year ago@leslihalber-0
Although most sellers will happily accept buyers' requests to cancel, they aren't obligated to do so.
Per ebay policy, buyers are expected to know what they're buying (or bidding on) BEFORE purchasing and required to follow through so in essence, buyers are the ones in the wrong when they want to cancel.
Some sellers cannot cancel because they have an automated system and items are promptly packed and shipped and a request to cancel may come too late for the seller to accept.
ETA: In the case of the most recent feedback you left, you need to keep in mind that the seller may not even have seen your message prior to going out to "drop off" the item. They may have bought the label shortly after your purchase, left to do errands and dropped it off at the post office later that morning.
Your feedback was not fair to the seller.
