why can't I sell to a buyer in Swizterland?
Summary: mark333414 is experiencing difficulties selling an antique sewing machine to a buyer in Switzerland through eBay. Despite relisting the item as 'Buy It Now' and checking all eBay settings, the buyer is unable to purchase it. Other participants suggest various potential issues, such as blocked buyers due to unpaid items, possible oversights in shipping settings, and regulatory complexities with eBay International Shipping for Switzerland. mark333414 seeks further clarification, as eBay support did not address these specific concerns, and is considering overriding payment settings for the buyer while being cautious of potential risks.
I have an antique sewing machine that a buyer in switzerland wants to buy. He was able to bid on the item and win but I canceled the order and relisted it as a buy now item because apparently eBay's international shipping doesn't apply to auctions. But now he says eBay won't let him "buy it now". I have checked all the settings that the eBay chat told me to and everything looks good on my end. I have EIS enabled, no countries are excluded, the item is not restricted in Switzerland, and it meets all the selling requirements. Why can't he buy my item?

·2 weeks agoI've had incidents like this with EIS sales. Certain countries disallow items from certain categories no matter what they are. I sold a multimeter probe to a customer in Poland and had the same issue. It is literally an insulated metal probe with a wire to plug into a multimeter.
It seems silly to blanket ban entire categories, but this is the awesome future we live in.

OP2 weeks agoI looked under the Buyer's Rules section which has a link to Manage block settings and rules activity log. I never manually blocked the buyer but I'm wondering if he hasn't "provided a payment method before they make an offer". If I override this feature for him am I risking anything other than him just not paying? I obviously won't ship the item till payment is made but I don't know if there are any other risks to doing this. I haven't had any other interest on this item other than him so I'm not concerned about losing a sale.

·2 weeks agoI just checked your listing for the sewing machine and Switzerland is not the list of countries you sell to.
mark333414
OP2 weeks agoWhere are you seeing this? When I check my settings it shows that I don't have any countries excluded. Even in the shipping details where there are some countries excluded (I'm assuming eBay automatically excludes them based on those countries' restrictions) Switzerland isn't one of them listed.

·2 weeks agoPerhaps your item is larger or heavier than is allowable.
For the eBay International Shipping program, package restrictions include:
Packages should not exceed 48 inches in length or 84 inches in length plus girth.
Billable weight must not exceed 44 lbs for most countries and 66 lbs for Canada.
The total order cost must not exceed $2,500 USD, including shipping.

OP2 weeks agoNope. Like I said, it meets all the selling requirements.

·2 weeks agoI had this selling to Switzerland from where I am, I am in the UK and ebay puts Switzerland as a full blown member of the European Union which it is not, its just part of Europe, at the moment the confusion is over the PPWR regs, would EIS be the producer because they re box stuff to get the shipping cost down to make more profit or does the seller need to register in each EU country which costs about 400 USD per country per year even though Switzerland has enshrined the regs and will not until 2030 at the earliest.

OP2 weeks agoI don't know about any of this. I tried getting answers from eBay chat and they gave me a bunch of things to check but didn't mention any of the things you mentioned.

·2 weeks agoYour shipping countries dont show Switzerland so if you listed the item as you will ship there, it looks like EIS wont ship there.

OP2 weeks agoWeird. When I asked eBay chat if Switzterland was excluded from this particular listing for any reason it told me no.

·2 weeks agoHave you looked at his FB? It is possible that he is Blocked for another reason, like too many Unpaid Items.
mark333414
OP2 weeks agoIs that something I can check on my end? I told him to see if there was anything on his end that could be the problem but I haven't heard back yet (I just messaged him about an hour ago so I don't expect an answer for a while given the time difference).

·2 weeks agoYes. We can Block any buyer from bidding if they have more than two Strikes for non payment. Have you set up that automatic protection?
We can also preemptively Block any buyer we want, even if we never have had any transactions with them.
And looking at their FB left for others can give a clue in the wording of their FB . FB recieved with false positives indicates a seller who doesn't know how to win a Claim.
