Why a charge for cancelling an order?
Summary: goldaward-34 expressed confusion over a $10 fee charged by eBay after canceling an order they believed was suspicious. They conducted research and found claims it was connected to scammers, but a participant explained it might involve freight forwarders often used in legitimate transactions. Other participants clarified that eBay does not charge cancellation fees directly but suggested the charge could be related to shipping labels or non-refundable seller fees. Despite the suspicion, there was no evidence of misconduct linked to the address, and participants advised on refund processes and policy understanding.
I just canceled an order and ebay charged me $10.00 for cancelling an order that I did not feel was legit and after some research I found out that I was right. Can anyone explain to me why I got charged $10.00 for cancelling a sale?

·1 month ago@goldaward-34 We need you to participate in the thread you started and answer some questions so that we can more accurately help you.
Ebay does NOT charge a Cancellation fee no matter the reason for the cancellation that the seller selects. So whatever you are seeing is NOT a Cancellation charge, it is something else.
What was the date of the sale?
How much was the product and how much was the shipping on the order?
Did the buyer pay for the order that you cancelled?
What was the reason you selected when you filed the Cancellation and why?
Had you purchased the shipping label in Ebay?
If the buyer had paid you, then the Cancellation your filed would have ended up with a FULL refund to the buyer. Depending on the reason you selected Ebay may NOT refund your Selling Fees.
I hope you will come back so we can more accurately help you.

OP1 month agoI had gotten the label and after looking at the address more closely something just didn't feel right. After I did some research and found out that it was a international shipping warehouse a person said that they got scammed because everything just seemed to good to be true with their situation. Then I canceled the order and thats when ebay charged me the ten dollars to cancel. I just thought it was strange that they charged me to cancel an order.

·1 month agoThere was likely nothing wrong with the transaction. Just because you don't like the address or that it was going to a Freight Forwarder, there shouldn't be an issue as long as you ship to the exact address on the Order. Seller protection would be in place. If you are scared of shipping to a Freight Forwarder, it is likely unfounded. I've shipped to many of the over the years and never an issue.
IDK who this "warehouse person" is or why you took their word for something, but it most certainly is your right to do that.
As for the fees charged, again Ebay DOES NOT charge for a Cancellation. Now if you Cancelled the transaction and selected a seller reason it is quite possible that Ebay charged you your selling fees and didn't refund them. This is in the Policy.
Or maybe you didn't VOID the shipping label in order for you to get that refunded. If you do this, it does take 3-4 weeks to actually get the money back from the carrier because the carrier wants to make sure you didn't use it. This would have been a note on your screen during the Voiding process.

·1 month ago · EditedThat's a freight forwarder, and you were able to see that it was a legit address.
A common way for overseas buyers to have their purchases shipped.
The likelihood of a scam on a $20 book is low at best, plus you may have enhanced seller protections when your shipment is collected by a third party on behalf of the buyer.
What reason did you give for canceling?

·1 month ago@goldaward-34 as you've been told, ebay does NOT charge to 'cancel'.
The 'shipping label' cost was removed. So if your customer paid you (for example) $30 for item + $10 for shipping ($40 total) and you purchased label (which you stated you did) you would now NOT have that $40 to give back to that customer as you would be 'short' the label cost' plus, depending on 'if it was an auction' or other reasons, the FEE was also removed...
so your 'available may only be $30- so you needed to COVER that $10.
You can 'void' that label and you will be refunded 3-4 weeks later.

·1 month agoI'm thinking that you don't know that when you cancel an order that a refund is issued to your customer? You do not get charged anything additional for cancelling.

·1 month agoAre we just not going to talk about the account ding you got for cancelling, or is that not even on your radar yet?

·1 month ago@fabrics24 We don't know the reason why they cancelled. The OP states in another post they cancelled because the address was supposedly a scammer. If they cancelled due to an address issue, there won't be a ding.

·1 month agoIf you don't have the avaliable funds, you have to cover the refund when you cancel an order.
When the hold is released, the buyers payment will be sent to you.

·1 month agoMost likely this. The problem is that it's unclear. Their charges don't really say why. I had the same thing and was mad that they charged me for a label though I used my own. After calling, I finally got someone to explain that I withdrew all my funds just before so they had none to charge so they charged my credit card on file.

The address you’re probably referring to is to a freight forwarder. Freight forwarders handle many thousands of transactions on eBay and other sites for foreign buyers. Just like with shipping to a domestic buyer every now and then you end up with scammer. Many sellers have never heard of freight forwarders so when something goes wrong they blame on the address and post it on the internet.
I’ve had zero issues with scammers sending many orders over the years to a freight forwarders but can’t say that about my other buyers.
