Where are the International Buyers?
It's been a few weeks since I had a buyer from UK or Canada.
I wonder if anyone else is experiencing this?
I had one International Buyer in weeks...from Poland...that's it.
It's nothing but domestic buyers weeks now.
I do get quite a bit of buyers every day.
But, to get 0 buyers now from other countries is not looking good.
I usually get about 10+ International buyers a week...UK especially.
Canada buyers...plus my 'repeat Canada buyers' has dried up weeks ago.

President Donald Trump imposed new tariffs, effective March 4, 2025, including a 25% duty on imports from Canada and Mexico, with Canadian energy resources subject to a reduced 10% tariff. Tariffs on Chinese imports were raised from 10% to 20%.
Tariffs on products from Mexico and Canada, eligible under USMCA, are excluded from the additional tariffs. Approximately 50% of the products of Mexico and 38% of Canadian products qualify under USMCA.
USMCA covered products include automobiles and parts and produce. While some potash, used in fertilizer, qualifies under USMCA, other potash, which is not qualifying, will carry a 10% tariff rather than 25%.
Starting March 12, global steel and aluminum imports will face an additional 25% tariff.
Imports that qualify for de minimis entry from Canada, Mexico, and China are temporarily exempt from the new tariffs.
Canada and China have announced retaliation plans, though it is unclear whether Mexico will follow.
Trump announced that reciprocal tariffs are going into effect on April 2, 2025.
Importers should consider duty mitigation strategies to manage increased costs.

·1 year agoYou know, on this subject... although I'm the international one in the situation, I did get one very concerned message from a regular yesterday (who has been bidding in the weekly auctions on this account) that he's concerned the tariffs will affect his ability to buy from me. He wanted to know what I think and what I plan to do about it if tariffs are being imposed on anything I ship.
I did my best to reassure him with how things are today (and his package that goes out tomorrow, all is good there) and what I would be doing if the tariffs started to affect me. I did assure him that tariffs on his order wouldn't be a surprise, I'd reach out to him to discuss it if something changes this week causing the packages I ship him to be subject to tariffs.
He did mention he's been filling lots of holes in his collection with my auctions and is anxious for the bidding on these things to come to an end soon so he's seen all my inventory and doesn't have to worry in future of there being tariffs on what he buys from me. This buyer is spending around $150 a week, so I get that he doesn't want to be tariffed on that.
I think it's working both ways, international buyers don't want to buy from USA, and USA buyers don't want to buy international. So far although it has affected the number of customers I have (and on certain days very few sales), I do note some of my loyal customers in Canada (one in particular who is getting all the custom packages of tokens I do up for him), have kept buying from me.

OP1 year agoI won quite a few of auctions this week-end.
I have decided to not do any auctions with Canadian stamps since I lost a lot of Canadian buyers...😢
I am excited about our yearly San Francisco Westpex 2025 Stamp Show next month...it will be interesting to see who shows up this year selling lots and who won't be there(65 dealers).
Wonder if the Russian and Mexican Exhibits will be there or cancelled.

OP1 year agoI did get an International Buyer today...well, sort of.
I won't ask for this again.
It's a buyer using 'freight forward' for a standard envelope.
Ask me why...it's going to Colombia and I have blocked that country with past issues.
I guess I can kiss that sale out the door...not doing tracking since items leaving from Doral, Florida are not getting scanned as 'delivered' lately.

·1 year agoI haven't been counting freight forwarders in my tally of international sales lately, but I have had what appear to be a few (not sure where they're going, I did not look at the account).
I did get one from England. I'm making sure my card is in all envelopes especially international ones so if there is some dissent towards America maybe it won't affect me so much since I'm Canada (and just ship from the US, hence the location in my listings).
Many of my regulars have disappeared, and I mean USA buyers, so I think USA buyers don't want to buy from Canada where I'm at, and Canadian and international sellers don't want to buy from a USA location, also where I'm at. Kind of getting it at both ends. The Canadian eBay store is picking up (and now just needs me to spend time listing stuff), but it's what I'm going to fall back on to buy food if I have to shut this account down for a bit until things are sorted out.
In a worst case I'll change the ship from location to Canada (and start shipping here), if there's no other way to resolve it. But I'm not looking forward to a lot of refused packages due to tariffs. I realize they lose protections, but if I have to go to other sites to find out they refused the package and eBay's ingrained tracking system isn't picking that up, eBay is telling me I have to refund or get a defect. So saying they lose protections doesn't work when there's no paper trail to prove such on ebay. (I found out about the last one on parcels app, it was going to belgium, he refused it and filed an INR saying he didn't get it, I called ebay and they told me they have no record of him refusing it and as far as they're concerned the package just never arrived, the fact that I could get this info on parcels app did not interest eBay in the least and I was told to refund the guy his money. Had to block EU because it was becoming a habit having buyers doing that to me).

·1 year agoI was averaging 3 international sales a week over my accounts. For the last 3 weeks 0 international sales. So it's noticeable for me.
I'm not a fan of the suggestion to wait and see where we are at, that it'll all be just super in 6 months. I see too many people here selling on eBay that it's their only income. Then I read comments from President Trump like today when he said he could care less if car prices go up. To me, these sorts of repeated promises ring hollow and lack compassion for people who will be hurt in this.
I'm thinking soon we will be seeing more and more posts concerning lack of sales, inability to pay bills, and this is coming on top of the "normal" summer slowdown perhaps. Some of our fellow sellers and others can't wait 6 months. I hope the responders will have a bit more compassion and empathy than many have received.

·1 year agoCarney doesn't have a seat in the House of Commons, my understanding is he can do things through a proxy because he doesn't have a seat in Parliament. When the election happens he will be running for a seat in one riding (not sure who is giving up their seat for him to run, I don't follow this that closely). If he runs and he doesn't win his seat and is beaten out by an opponent I don't think he can stay the leader of that political party, he has to have a seat in Parliament.
That's the best I can answer, I didn't research his bio to see what he's been doing for the last 10 years but the news broadcasts to Canada things about his resume that make him qualified to do the job (even though he's never held political office, not to the best of my knowledge).

·1 year agoBack to India - I used to shop on eBay India. I recall selling something there once or twice but it was a long time ago. The nice folks I used to broker velvet cloth from would ship it to me in heavy cloth bags, hand sewn across the top. Their address included "Next to the mailbox" on a certain street.
Shipped a computer mouse to the Netherlands the other day, though.

·1 year agoI'm going to Greenland in August. I will start every greeting with customer service by saying "Jeg ar fran Kanada, talar du engleska?" (Forgive the spelling, I don't even speak Danish, but Danes can understand me when I speak Swedish).
My exhusband wants a collection of all the goodies they're selling in Greenland to promote their independence, not wanting to be part of the US (like the hat you posted has a Greenland flag on it). I intend to bring a couple hundred dollars worth of Danish Krone specifically to buy souvenirs for my friends in Canada. We're trying to get extra pins and patches for sewing projects.
Speaking of which, my ex should be off work soon... gotta find out what he wants me to bring him home from Greenland.

Don't expect a lot when you visit it...foggy as heck sometimes and muggy.
Would I go back there...nope.

I looked up some 2024 Greenland stamps. I thought they were butt ugly. (Just my opinion on design, there are stamps I like a lot better from other places). If they are picking up popularity maybe I should visit a post office and see what they have.
Can you tell me do they speak Danish much? Am I silly for greeting people in Danish? Maybe they don't like the Danes anymore. I heard English is picking up popularity in Nuuk for customer service.
Never been to Greenland but am excited about going. We're excited to see what kind of souvenirs we can get (I'm hoping for patches, we sew them on our luggage). I've been to places that were not very populated with not much tourism (like the Falklands), and there was cool stuff to buy in the one souvenir shop in town. I'm guessing the Falklands see more tourism than Greenland though, considering lots of cruise ships go there. I haven't found any cruises to Greenland (not very often) in the past, this is the first one I found that's in my budget.

OP1 year agoWith the current administration I suggest keeping a low profile in Greenland...but the positive side is the value of stamps there have increased in value....Anything relating to marine life is 'hot'.
I have been to the Falklands and thought 'is this all there is'...LOL

·1 year agoI would but we're divorced and I consider myself lucky I'm not sending him money. So I'm not expecting any help with my real problems.
I bring souvenirs for my friends from trips all the time, once I know what kind of souvenir they want... some of my friends collect pins, shot glasses, postcards, etc. I don't know if there will be much to buy where I'm going to in Greenland (Nuuk for one, forget the other place), but it's going to be a big shopping spree if they have souvenirs.

·1 year agoI haven't seen any decrease in international buyers at all. In fact, I had three more over the past 30 days than I had during the previous 30. The only difference I'm seeing has been an increase in international buyers using freight forwarders, especially the big one in Delaware.

It's almost like I'm running for political office.
Well, I believe that the mods will shut this down soon, so I'll answer.
You already put down a BIG deal, the opening of jobs in 'this or that state'.
People live in 'this' and 'that' and they may be some of the few that want to work for a living, so it is a big deal to them. I'd expect to see random job increases in BOTH this AND that state. That would be bad, eh?
With the exception of California, New York state, Washington state and a few others.
Gas should be below $3 a gallon (again, exception California and New York).
We should be having half the number of drug deaths, we should be deporting a large part of the 750k already convicted and dangerous illegal criminals here, so crime should go down.
Europe will be spending their own money to defend themselves, and they won't hate us any MORE than they already do, so that's a win. I think that both the middle east and Europe will be safer, more peaceful. A tenuous peace maybe .. but peace nonetheless.
Six months is kind of quick, but this guy is moving at the speed of light. Hopefully the home-grown enemies of the US won't delay him too much, but that will only delay I believe.
I, for one, am going to pray that The Orange Guy is successful. Because if he isn't, we're all in big trouble.
We're in a deep hole now, and he's catching heat because he stopped digging deeper.
You pray for his failure comrade. You hope for the downfall of the USA. I hope you're wrong.

·1 year agoOkay so that doesn't sound anything like all of us doing very well, more like the kind of changes that (if they even happen, and are provably measureable) will be meaningless to many, not just in California or New York but places like Alabama where I live, where lots of people can't even afford a car to put gas in even if gas was free. Instead they're the exact kind of changes that (as usual) would be proffered as citations of "things" accomplished, even if benefiting only relatively few of us. -That's exactly the kind of goal post moving I was talking about. So I appreciate you walking back your extraordinary claim ahead of time; that was wise.

Btw, Hyundai just opened a steel mill in Louisiana valued at $5.8 billion usd with 1,300 on-site jobs; and Hyundai is investing another $8 billion usd expanding Georgia EV plant, creating 8,500 on-site jobs and building another EV battery plant in Georgia with 3,500 on-site jobs. This is just a tiny fraction of foreign companies investing in the USA market. We have so much to be grateful for.

·1 year agoLast night I wanted to provide a link to the Australian eBay Community page, for an Aussie that posted a question here by accident. While I was there I took a very brief scroll down the front page, and within the top 5 or 6 posts I saw this:
-It would be naive to think that only buyers in tariff countries might be consciously refraining from buying from us, or that price increases due to tariffs are the only thing turning off international buyers. There are bound to be many who are just ambiguously nervous and disgusted by the whole of America at this point. And anyone who wants to argue with ME about it would be missing the point by a country mile. But go ahead, spin your wheels at me if it helps maintain your sense of hope.

Did your iternational sales return? It's now going on 3 weeks for me; one day, they just stopped. I sell to buyers from Shangai to Santiago to London to Timbuktu, so I know it's not some subconscious, concerted effort.

·1 year agoFunny thing is, just got an email from someone in Canada, he asked my why the shipping and tax came to more than the item. It essentially killed the deal. It's unfortunate it has to be this way.

·1 year agoShipping to Canada from the US is always high. I buy dresses regularly for around $25-30 and then pay $25 shipping EIS (now there's going to be 25% tariff on top of that). Still cheaper to buy a used Ralph Lauren dress on eBay than to buy a new one in Canada. Lots of US retailers aren't shipping to Canada anymore either.
Think I'll have to go to the outlets in Niagara and shop there.

·1 year agoTypically Canadian orders account for about 10% of my sales, or about 1 or 2 orders a a day. I have had zero orders from Canada since the beginning of March. The UK and Australia have continued to order from me at their usual rate though.
i avoid political news these days, but I believe this is a geo political issue. Canadians currently have a negative view of supporting American businesses. The tariffs are a big part of this. It’s unfortunate as I have always bought and sold with Canadians and have found them to be overwhelmingly honest and kind.

·1 year agoI had a few this week. One from Canada who, in a lengthy message attached to his order, thanked me from the bottom of his heart for selling to a Canadian. (What wouldn't I sell to a Canadian buyer? I mean, what have the Canadians done to us? 😠They are far too smart to want to take over the USA.)
The other was to an overseas destination via a freight forwarder in Delaware.
For THAT package, I used FedEx, since USPS no longer provides tracking to freight forwarders, as I found out the other day, courtesy of @ittybitnot (thank you!).

They provide tracking, but in more and more cases no DELIVERY scan. They still might, but seemingly have declared they don't have to if they don't want to do so if the recipient is a "third party" shipper. They don't have to pay out insurance claims for parcels to F. Forwarders that never say "delivered". You take your chances. Do let us know if you get a delivered scan with FedEx.

·1 year agoI'm getting heartfelt messages from Canadians who are happy to find out I'm in Canada. I'm advertising that when I send out offers that I'm in Canada and there's no tariffs on their order. (I ship all non-Canadian orders from NY as per the listing, but Canadians see that and don't buy).

·1 year agoSeems international sales will drop as tariffs go into effect and the economy plummets. It will be a vicious cycle and people will ask which came first the tariffs or the recession? It won't be pretty.

·1 year agoHave you considered the exchange rates of the USD to the foreign countries currency, plus all the custom fees, shipping labels, VAT, tariffs etc.?
For example Canada currency exchange - https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=exchange+rate+us+dollar+to+canadian+dollar+calculator.
Shipping services within Canada and most other countries ain't no bargain either.
In the early 1990s had 6 cousins from Sweden visit the US for the first time - the luved going shopping here in the States - two examples I recall - they bought arm fulls of Levi 501 denims jeans US price then about $5.00 cost in Sweden then about 50 US bucks. Those Radio Shack wireless home hand sets price in US 50 bucks tops. $600 in Sweden (that is not a typo) - they all bought 1 and where going to sell some to their friends at a bargain $ to help pay for their travel expenses. They traveled around and wanted to visit Graceland - they based out of Michigan and like to drink a whole lot.

·1 year agoOne more thing the population of Canada is about 39 million people scattered over a large land mass. The largest city in the world is Tokyo Japan at 37 million and USA is 340 million. Largest consuming nation is the USA followed by China and India. While Europe is about twice the population of the US - all the countries certainly don't sing or swing to the same ole song.

·1 year agoBuying a furnace during winter will end up costing more (generally). If i had a qualified person that not only could source parts for the repair but also confirm safety, i would still have it patched up now and wait till prices go down. If you don't have qualified people to fix it than it does sound like you're going to have to bite the bullet on this one.

·1 year agoKind of a tangent, but I just realized I've never sold anything to the (MASSIVE) country of India. Do they have an eBay platform? Anybody reading this ever get orders from there? I had already noticed (at least a year ago) that I'd never sold to anyone in South America but India is an even bigger head-scratcher, about 3 times as big!

·1 year agoI don't ship to India or South America (except via freight forwarder).
India has lots of corrupt customs officials, so even if your buyers are honest (and some of my past Indian customers were honest, but there were still shipping problems), you run the risk of your stuff not getting there.
South America is kind of the same, but I've run across lots of dishonest buyers there as well (even a few with freight forwarders). Basically South America, Africa, Central Asia... all non-starters.

I've never sold anything to India. The closest to India I have ever gotten is China (several orders from there, in fact, mostly hard to find LPs).

·1 year agoI think there's lots of dislike going on right now in the rest of the world (for many reasons, we don't have to go there).
I'm economically driven, so I sell to whoever gives me money and I never tell a customer their money's no good here (unless they've previously scammed me).

·1 year agoMy Canada buyers won't shop on this account anymore, they've all come over to eBay.ca to shop on my eBay Canada store. I did get some UK buyers now and again, but none for a few weeks. A month ago I had quite a few UK sales.
International this week has been one sale to South Korea, one to Australia and one to Hong Kong. That's on my US eBay store, so there are international buyers out there if you have stuff they want to buy.

·1 year agoMy US buyers are sending me sympathetic words as well (the ones that still want to buy from me). Some say nothing but have repeatedly purchased from me in these past few months, a few items each time, one buyer buys 10 items at a time. It's good to have these sales.
I figured that Canadian sellers would be boycotting (from my last round of trade dollars in this account I had only US buyers, low bids, it wasn't good). I put them on eBay CA more recently and all my repeat buyers showed up there. They aren't even looking at eBay com or paying attention to anyone who's location is US. The few Canadians that are buying from this account know I'm also in Canada and that there's no tariffs on their orders.
When sending offers I've been telling my Canada and US buyers how I ship and that there's no tariffs on their orders, and that seems to have helped them buy.
On my Canada eBay account I've had two US buyer sales (which kind of surprised me), one was a new buyer in Alaska I've never sold to before, and the other is someone from this store who bids on my trade dollars. I'm sure they'll like their order coming without tariffs (with Stallion Express, the lack of tariffs is entirely possible).

·1 year agoIt's not really overplayed... if the package is a de minimis package (under $800) there's no tariffs. As long as Stallion Express can get my orders to USPS, they ship as domestic US orders. Canadian buyers have been inquiring to make sure I ship their order from within Canada, not sure if I'm supposed to, eBay says I can have multiple ship from locations as long as buyers get what they expect. I don't think any Canadian buyer will complain about not paying tariffs (if the order comes from the US there is 25% tariffs on any value coming into Canada).
As for the affects of tariffs... I need a furnace. I'm scared to think what that's going to cost with a 25% tariff. Even if we make them here, we import parts. A furnace in Canada was a $7-8K CAD investment, it's going to be like 10K now. Makes me think I should have bought it a few months ago but I didn't want to spend a day or two without heat in January when it's 20 below freezing. Also furnaces are most expensive in January and February because people's break down and need immediate replacements. I thought waiting until we dont need a furnace to buy one was a smart thing to do. (Mine is 4 years older than it's life expectancy and I've paid 2K in repairs on it over the past three years, time to buy a new one).

You should call someone that can fix your furnace. We had the same problem a few years ago with one that is no longer in production. Took us a few weeks (hard to find parts) to find the repair person who could source what was needed to keep it going. It still is working fine with the occasional hiccup. Prices will go down soon and keep an eye on them. (seasonal)

·1 year agoWe have had it fixed many times, and had almost every replaceable part on it replaced. Apparently that big fire that happened last year was a gas explosion, I'd feel safer if I got a new furnace. (I was doing OK when thought it was wiring since my unit has been rewired with copper, but at the condo meeting last month they said it was a gas explosion and it took out everything between the cinderblock firewalls).
In Canada most people don't use electric heat because it's so expensive, so lots of people heat with natural gas, propane and oil, depending on where you live. When they repaired my furnace the last time they were checking for leaks everywhere. I am hesitant to believe them too much since they stand to benefit from selling me a new furnace, but my insurance company is concerned about it's age.

As for the affects of tariffs... I need a furnace.
We added a heat pump to our electrically heated house about eight years ago, it has already paid for itself, although we still have working baseboards in most rooms, they don't turn on.
It also gives us airconditioning in the summer.
It is less efficient when temps drop below 0F /-15C.
And there are subsidies here in BC, possibly also in Ontario.

I would imagine this trend will continue other places.

·1 year agoAmerican here. I too apologize and absolutely do NOT blame the international buyers for fleeing from/boycotting US Sellers. I just hope Canada is cool with letting me seek asylum if this political poo show doesnt stop soon. I could really use that free healthcare after my insurance premiums blew up to more that what I make a month...ridiculous..

·1 year agoDon't count on it. Canada (just like here) doesn't just offer citizenship because you'd rather live there. My aunt and uncle couldn't get it despite owning a home there and living there half the year for the prior several years .... and that was way before any of this mess was whispered on the wind.

·1 year agoIf they're retired, retirees aren't allowed to locate here permanently. Once you become a permanent resident you get benefits like free health care, Canada doesn't want to pay for all the seniors' health care if they move here, so they only let you move here if you can find work and get a work visa (or are from a country where you would seek asylum here).

·1 year agoYes they're retired and that's exactly why their applications were denied. IDK if that's the case for the person I replied to, but I just suspect moving there and becoming qualified for benefits like healthcare is probably harder to do than they are picturing, especially now. And I seriously doubt needing healthcare would (alone) counts as grounds for asylum. If I'm wrong about that, please pleasantly shock me!!

·1 year agoThere's some kind of safe third country rule here that we don't take asylum from a country where people are supposed to be safe. It's why when people come up from Central America they're not allowed to seek asylum here if they transit the US, but there was some kind of loophole a few years back where they could come across a non-patrolled crossing into Canada and file an asylum application (which we had to accept if they hadn't filed one in the US first).
I could be wrong on the details since I'm getting my information from the CBC news which might not be telling the whole story. Canada has migrant farm workers here (there are lots in Southern Ontario, I live near some farms that produce vegetables), I've met some at the roadside stands while buying vegetables on my way home. They are always pleasantly surprised that I speak some Spanish (because in this area it's mostly English, it doesn't have a lot of immigrant population except farm workers because there aren't many jobs there).
I know people can come in on work visas with skilled labour, but at retirement age just looking to settle down, we don't hand out permanent resident cards. The skilled labour is a path to permanent residency but we're looking for people to come here, provide us with skills and pay taxes, not do nothing and collect social services like healthcare (that's not the only one, if you're a resident here you can get welfare or disability, qualify for the free seniors dental care, etc, etc). So working here is the only way to get to retire here. We don't kick people out when they reach retirement age, if they followed the correct entry path they can retire here later.

If I send a text message to someone and say something that opposes the current administration and US customs looks at my phone, I can be given a lifetime bar and deported for privately sharing my opinion. It happened to a French Scientist, everyone thinks he posted publically with his name on it, but my understanding is that it was a private exchange between him and someone he was texting with. (Do correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like they're doing things like checking phones a lot more now... I didn't have a phone with text capability when I used to cross often, I think having my privacy invaded like that would have been unfathomable at the time).

·1 year agoYep, it's pretty scary and with each passing day there is so much uncertainty of what's next. They preached about the constitution, the rule of law, freedom of speech and did the opposite after being elected.
He freed all the J6ers, including the violent ones, but he's locking up Tesla vandals as domestic terrorist with mandatory minimums. He's more concerned about the world's richest man being treated unfairly, and could care less about anyone else.
And with all the firings, and hiring all loyalists there's nobody left to speak up or ring the alarm bells if need be.
He promised to lower the debt but doesn't really care how much it increases, and at the same time cutting social safety nets for the lower and middle class, just so he can pass his tax cuts for the rich.
Even republicans at a town hall recently in NE were chanting "Tax the rich", I've never seen that before in a red state.
He preached the tariffs on canada were because they need to control drug trafficking better from the northern border, meanwhile Gabbards own report on trafficking never mentioned canada. I've said all along they were just using that as an excuse and sure enough their lies caught up to them.
I just watched the video of MP Charlie Angus saying the US is "slipping into totalitarianism. If our nearest neighbor doesn’t respect the rule of law for its own citizens, how is it going to respect international law? And it certainly doesn’t respect us as Canada. So we have no choice—we’re going to make decisions that benefit our region and our people first."
Even the 49.8% of voters that voted for him didn't vote for this, that number is closer to 32%. And some swing states he won with less than 1%
