Could not resist. I answer phones for a living. I was asked if I was AI. I said I don't know, let me pinch myself and see if I yell.

·8 months agoWhat to do next? Don't scam him, and maybe gain a repeat customer.

·8 months agoFeedbacks left by buyers give a history if one is a scammer or not.
And it's the other way around...feedbacks given by sellers(if any) can kinda tell what the buyer might be like.
To met, feedbacks still play an important road at to buying or selling no matter what others think.

·8 months agoI got a similar message years ago from a woman who asked me, "I hope you don't plan to scam me." To which I replied, "Why, did you want me to scam you?"
She bought an item and ended up being a regular customer.

·8 months agoNot knowing why he asked this, I would probably try to "educate" him a bit and reply to him to tell him that if a seller was going to scam him, that seller would not admit to being a scammer if asked. I'm not sure how I would word a reply but I would try to explain about how to vet sellers, i.e. the best way to determine "good sellers" is to look at their feedback to see what it looks like, if that seller has received very many neutrals or negatives and what are their responses, if any. I would also advise him to be careful about buying things from other countries, and if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
That buyer could be naive, scared of being ripped off, or just setting up the OP to see what kind of response he would get.

·8 months agoThat did make me chuckle but then again I have a few friends that won't evens shop with me because they associate the word ebay with scammers.
I would just refer them to your feedback.
So have you done anything yet to respond?
iamalwaysright
OP8 months agoSadly no. I was this close to replying with “Well that depends on if you’re a scammer or not.â€

·8 months agoI understand their concern, but by simply asking that question they are revealing their naivety. A scammer is not going to respond, "Yes, I am!" A person who cannot rationally think that out screams someone who will be a problem. Their mind, before they even buy, is predisposed to believing they will be scammed. This may or may not be grounded in something they have experienced on eBay.
I would not interact with this person whatsoever. Instead, I'd run - not walk - to put them on my block list.

OP8 months agoLol. Yea I was just thinking the same thing, what would happen if I replied like that.
Or even so, since the actually question was verbatim “You’re not a scammer are you?†I should just simply answer “Yes†to add to the confusion and leave it be 😉

·8 months agoOr "If I was, would I tell you?" REALLY confuse them LOL

OP8 months agoMaybe it’s just me, but if someone answered simply “Yes†to that exact question of “you aren’t a scammer are you?†I would follow it up with “wait, you mean ‘yes’ as in you are a scammer, or ‘yes’ as in you’re not a scammer?â€
broto_64
·8 months agoThat is the best way I have seen this explained, you are absolutely correct.

OP8 months agoI’m reminded of something I used to say when seeing all these posts of people labeling other buyers or sellers as scams.
They should already change the definition of the word
SCAM: “Something or someone that an accuser simply does not like.â€

·8 months agoA new user? Some do worry a bit. The problem is a buyer like that can be real trouble. I just would not reply. Some might even place them on their blocked bidder list. When they ask strange questions, if often ends badly for the seller.

·8 months agoEvery now and then when my phone rings it says "potential scam".
I answer "Hello, you're not a scammer are you?"
They always hang up.
