When to ship the item after it is sold
Hey Everyone,
It's been a while since I have sold something on ebay and I seem to be a bit confused about something.
First, let me say I understand that I pay for Insurance and do not pass that onto the seller.
Back in the day when I sold an item, I would receive funds into Paypal and immediately send it my bank.
But now, Paypal is gone and you connect your bank directly to ebay, I get that.
So, my item sold yesterday and the funds seem to be on hold (it does show it on ebay) and ebay states my funds will be available 3 days after the buyer receives the item and makes sure it's good.
So, is that how it works now? I have to first ship it out and once the buyer receives the item, then ebay will actually transfer the funds to my bank account?
Or do I wait first for the funds to appear in my bank account and then ship? This is how I thought the process would work.
Any feedback is appreciated.

OP1 year agoSo the item was delivered and I received my funds a few days later.
Thanks for everyone's feedback and you some of you stated, I was just jumping the gun.
I see how things work with Ebay.
Now onto my next sell (hopefully ðŸ˜)

·1 year agoYou apparently set up a handling time when making the listing, but had no idea what that meant. For someone who is paranoid about being scammed, why did you not take the time to understand how it all works before you listed? Go through and read the policies on selling, buyer protection, returns, etc.
I rarely use Best Offer for the reason that most buyers do not want to haggle, and the ones who do end up being a pain a lot of times by sending lowball offers. If you don't agree to the 70% discount they want, they may buy it, then leave negative feedback to "get even." If you are priced where the market is, people will buy. Those are the buyers you want. Your buyer seemed good paying the full price, so that's a win in my book.
You are not wrong to be concerned about scams. They happen, especially to people who do not sell often or who are new sellers. I experienced multiple attempts from scammers when I started back reselling in 2023. Once my feedback score got up some, there was a decrease in frequency. It can still happen, but you cannot be paranoid about every sale. That's no fun. That's why I do my best to weed out those whom I think will be a problem before they buy. I do not entertain messages from people who ask questions that can be answered by reading the listing or from people who message unsolicited offers.

·1 year agoActually you do pass the cost of everything onto the buyer, you just have to add it to the item price.
FYI insurance is a total waste of money and will only lead to frustration

OP1 year agoWell, I shipped out the item.
What's strange to me is, I message the buyer twice but no return message so far.
And I had a Best Offer option on my listing and the buyer didn't even try to offer a different price.
Wouldn't you as a buyer of an item you want, try to make a counter offer if that option is available?
I find that strange and kind of a red flag but we'll see what happens.
Hope I am not about to get into a mess.

·1 year agoYou're overthinking it, I'd say.
They wanted the item. They bought it. Most of our sales, even on items that have Best Offer enabled, are for the listed price.
Not all buyers see or respond to eBay messages, and there was probably no reason to message them.

·1 year agoIf I want something and I'm okay with the asking price I don't mess with offers because someone else could come in and purchase before my offer is accepted.

·1 year ago@mcdonald73 Nothing strange about that at ALL. Buyers buy w/o trying to negotiate the price ALL the time! Also, why are you messaging them? There's no need to message them & many buyers get annoyed by unnecessary messages. eBay sends them messages for the important things like that you've shipped. There's no need for you to do it. Chances are good that they haven't answered you b/c they don't live on eBay. Sellers are on eBay all the time, buyers not so much. I would refrain from messaging them unless there's something out of the ordinary that you need an answer to. If it's just a routine transaction, they buy, you ship. No messages necessary.

·1 year agoSome people just want to buy an item they want, pay for it and be done vs playing a wait and see game on a cell or PC.. Sold for several years on eBay shipped 1665 item - never did a best offer.- fixed price with immediate payment option the day it was introduced. - did want to give away my profit and my price was right. That is what happens at 99.9% of the B & M stores or any type of restaurant..

On or before your stated handling time as noted by your carriers Acceptance Scan on the tracking number assigned - Personally shipped within 1 day or sooner. - our USPS carrier scan ours on pick up from our home..

·1 year agoOne note...you can charge the buyer for insurance...you just need to know how much it will cost ahead of time and add it as a handling charge on your listing. It get's added on to your shipping cost, however you set that up. It does not appear as a separate "handling" charge

You ship when the eBay seller hub tells you to ship.
Or do I wait first for the funds to appear in my bank account and then ship?
eBay told you you must ship before your funds will be released.
This is how I thought the process would work.
How you "thought the process would work" has absolutely no bearing on how the process actually works.

PS: many banks also have a hold - before funds are actually in your account - mine used to deposited the same day but not any more for several year. They no hold funds for at least 1 normal businessday (M thru Fridday plus all bank holiday - our bank is a hybrid - part bank, part savings & loan - originally is was a thoourbred S & L. Time changes everything except my BVDs.

·1 year agoMy OPINION on this transaction, note I said OPINION.
1. You will probably have to wait 30 days for this payment.
2. You took a high risk deciding to ship via FEDEX Ground. An unreliable service in many areas. And difficult to collect on insurance claims when you buy the shipping through a third party like Ebay.
FEDEX will scan before delivery. FEDEX will give the package the roughest treatment of the major carriers, and will leave items in an unsecured place without even ringing a doorbell. They are independent contractors doing the final delivery and do the least they can so they can keep driving.

·1 year agoWhat kind of feedback has the buyer ? All buyers will have 100% positives, because sellers now can only leave positives for buyers. With an expensive items like yours, have you googled the shipping address ? Scammers do look for new sellers with expensive items, especially electronics. I hope it will work out for you.

I did google the address and it seems to come up to a shopping area with a UPS Store.
So, maybe that is where this person has their stuff shipped.

Yes, that would be a UPS Store. Many people use that for box/parcel service. If any part of your transaction goes awry, just come back here for some guidance/wisdom before you do anything that might harm you.

OP1 year agoI did want to ask one more thing and not sure if I should create a separate topic but oh well.
As I stated, it's been a while since I sold anything on ebay.
I am actually surprised that my item sold just within a week of posting it.
Someone else is selling pretty much the same item (hi-fi audio equipment) as myself, has it for slightly lower and free shipping and yet my item, which is slightly higher with shipping cost, sold.
I am just wary of scams and wanted to ask if there is anything I should worry about or look out for?
As I said above, the funds do appear on ebay and I have not heard from the buyer in anyway. I did send him a message right away stating thanks for purchasing my item.
So, that just has me questioning a little bit but since I do not do this often, perhaps I am over thinking it?

Just come back here if there is an issue before doing anything else.

You have a 2-day handling time so you must ship within 2 days of the sale. (The order has a "ship by" date notice.)
You can use the shipping portion of your held funds to purchase the FedEx Ground or FedEx Home Delivery label, or you can purchase it yourself (if you have an account) or go to a Fedex store. If you don't buy the label from ebay, you need to add the tracking number to the order on ebay so it'll be there showing you shipped on time.

·1 year agoFWIW- I opened a new account when PP was still the payment processor and on that new account my funds were also held- I think for 21 days.
Two notes- I am not in the USA and I already had five or six accounts, two actively selling and one dating back to 1998.
It's policy not personal.

·1 year agoAs directed, if the item is in your "Amaiting Shipment" window, you must initiate the shipping process (your funds are processed and on hold).
When you use ebay labels, you can scroll down to the bottom of the label page and select Paypal or Use Existing Funds to pay for your label. Do not wait for the funds to clear, that is not how it works now.

·1 year agoYes, you ship first, then once the item is received, the funds can be paid out to your bank account after the hold is released (note that it's not always at the 3 days after mark, as there can be other reasons the money could be held for an additional time frame, usually up to 30 days and occasionally even longer). The buyer doesn't have the money, though, it's similar to an escrow situation where you can be confident the payout will come unless an issue arises that results in a refund to the buyer.
You can use those pending funds to purchase the shipping label for the package so that you aren't putting up the money for that separately.
