What the heck?
We finally sold an item. Took it to the post office, same day. Got home and messaged the buyer with his tracking number. Two things struck me odd this morning. I find that ebay says Im late in shipping. THIS SIMPLY IS NOT TRUE. Yes - I didn't add a tracking number where ebay wants me to. So now Im late? Also, is it true that we wont receive our funds until the customer receives his package? So - Ebay is sitting on money that doesn't belong to them. And more importantly - the post office loses stuff all the time. Last month, we had a (same state), package that was directed to SanDiego, LA, SanFrancisco, New Mexico and then Pennsylvania before being delivered in our state, only 84 miles away. In other words, it took more than two weeks to get delivered. Is Ebay now telling us that we wont be paid for the post office mistakes, until they straighten our their mess? Something is wrong here. Big time unhappy with Ebay.

" Yes - I didn't add a tracking number where ebay wants me to." So how did you expect Ebay to know if you did not give them the information. Did you go and load the tracking number into the Order / Ebay system? If not, you need to do that.
This is what can happen if you don't learn the very basics of selling before you start to sell. Don't get angry with Ebay. Ebay is doing EXACTLY what they say they will do. You simply didn't do your homework, so you didn't know what the procedure was for shipping.
Ebay has had a rule for many years that pertains to New Seller and sellers that have been away from selling for 90+ days. The following is the policy that outlines why you money is likely on hold.

·1 year agoThe only thing I will point out, in this case you really SHOULD add that tracking number. Without it, the buyer can claim they never got it, and because you never entered one for eBay, they can side with the buyer. The messages won't mean squat.

·1 year agoHi @greatpriceelectric Sounds like you need to do some homework to see what’s required of you as a seller when using eBay’s platform. Selling efforts can be undermined without a strong foundation in eBay policy and procedures.
One thing that trips up a fair number of users is the Money Back Guarantee. See link below for details.

·1 year agoI guess you are one of the many who assumed that since Ebay has so many sellers, there is no reason to read and learn how Ebay works.
You missed at least one aspect of how Ebay works. Hopefully you did not miss other, more expensive requirements.

·1 year agoIt's not necessary to message your buyer with the tracking number - just enter it into the order - the buyer will get a notification that their item has been shipped. If you don't purchase the label through the site's discount program, there's no way for eBay to know if it has been shipped or not.

A little clarification:
One doesn't have to use eBay's labeling/shipping program for eBay to know it's been shipped or not.
Many eBay sellers use third party sites like Stamps.com with the same discounted postal rates, and with automatic order downloading and post back of all shipping information to eBay's Paid and Shipped page at Seller Hub. This includes marking the item as shipped, populating the tracking number, and I even use its automatic post-back of feedback to my customers... all with one click when I'm reliably purchasing shipping and labels at Stamps.com. This works easily with both single orders and even when combining orders.
I believe other non-eBay shipping services like ShipStation and Pirate Ship have similar capability to one extent or another.
But you're right about the absolute necessity of entering the tracking number into the order at Seller Hub - whether manually or automatically.

·1 year agoThanks - I'm aware of this, using a third party shipper myself. I just didn't want to get into alternate shipping methods with someone who evidently is unfamiliar with tracking on the site.

·1 year agoYes, you are. How on earth would eBay know that you're not late, if you don't upload the tracking number?
Um, that package was late, not lost. USPS handles billions of packages and once in a while there's a sorting error, so a package goes on an adventure. But as you saw, they almost always eventually arrive.

eBay's policy regarding payment holds is much more complex than that. It involves risk assessment based on the transaction, your previous transactions, and your seller history.

"So - Ebay is sitting on money that doesn't belong to them." Seems very reasonable, the buyer paid and he ain't got his purchase that he paid for up front.
"the post office loses stuff all the time". I shipped 1665 eBay packages all by USPS only two were ever lost at different times the USPS sort facility in Jamaica, New York (near NYC). That is a batting average of .998798 in my book. Have purchased at least couple hundred items via eBay and countless personal mailing of all types - , including 3 cent postage stamp letters w/o I problem and a bunch of personal shipments for Christmas, B Days, bill payments never lost a USPS maii piecel since 1948. How many have you personally lost?????
Helpful HINTS: "Do it right the first time; measure twice and cut once; if it is real expensive measure at least 3 times - a creed of professional wood worker. Computers do not make mistakes - humans do - often referred to as a glitch which is an error that no one will admit to and involves a lot of fingepointing.
eBay is not the one that is to blame - you select the carrier, you are responsible for getting the package to the buyer within the stated delivery tom. As stated in my first comment you stated you mess up. You need to accept your boo-boo

·1 year agoCorrect, eBay thinks that you are late in shipping the item because you didn’t add the tracking number. They aren’t going to manage the entry for you – you don’t have a concierge, monitoring your messages, entering the information for you.
likely, you are on a payment hold. Maybe you have to wait 30 days for your payment, maybe shorter, maybe longer. It isn’t that eBay wants to hold you accountable for post office mistakes – they want you to be held accountable for your mistakes. They don’t want to be out of pocket for you sending the wrong item, a misrepresented item, etc. And, yes, if the post office screws up and loses the package, they want the funds to come from you, as they should.
welcome to online selling. Don’t stress about it – this is a temporary issue.

Yup, that's pretty much the crux of it. If you buy your label online the tracking automatically populates and the item is marked as shipped. Not to mention you get a deep financial discount.

OP1 year agoWhen we found the shipping label costs more than creating our own - thats the way we went. Ebay wanted to charge us over $1.27 for shipping - over what it actually cost us. Now - we find Ebay deducting the chage from our sale - TWO TIMES. No - this is not an error on our part. After selling for nine years, I think we know what should not be done.

When we found the shipping label costs more than creating our own - thats the way we went.
There is nothing wrong with using another method or source for shipping labels. Sometimes I use PIrateship for UPS labels due to cost differences and having a better way to fight UPS if they surcharge the shipping.
But you need to update the order with the tracking number. There is a place to insert it for any order you sell. eBay doesn't charge extra to do this.
