What makes up the difference between ebays search results for sold items and terapeaks?
In some cases I've had terapeaks sold items show much less than ebays search bar. for example "Apt 9 2x top" will show only 100 solds with the "90 days" and "used" filters applied on terapeak. But when searched on ebays search bar with preowned applied and the default 90 days filter it shows 179 items have sold and I counted them out and it's surely 179 listings. So what is making up the large difference in numbers? I've heard items sold from other countries won't show on terapeak but that can't be the case for almost half of the actual sold listings not showing up on terapeak

·2 years agoI have found that ebay destroyed the search algorithms for the "sold" listings. I used to be able to research an item in sold listings and then select one that best fit my item and start the listing by " sell similar". First they limited the sold to 90 days which killed its function ability and usability and now in the used car parts its completely beyond useless- all sold results returned are just the keyword spammed listings that have zero relevance to the search query. Sold search is completely and utterly worthless on ebay now in the used parts categories!
I have adapted by keeping the research tab open on a 2nd monitor and cut and pasting info into its search to find comps. It does at least work in used car parts BUT is extremely frustrating to find a great sold listing that is older than 90 days......you cant access the listing description or any of it to sell similar.
Basically ebay took the best and quickest research tool they had and gutted it to only 90 days worth of data then made it vulnerable to keyword spamming instead of making sold listing search only title key words and moved it to terrapeak (which was absolutely no doubt in an effort to monetize the info)( after realizing that nobody would pay for that info they decided to include it as a feature of course).
Research now take 3x longer on ebay and 90% of the time you cant access the pertinent info because the listing was older than 90 days.
I have research new items and items in other categories on sold listings with better success so the issue might be specific to antique and vintage and used items....... of course that is what built ebay into what it is and continues to be the biggest revenue driver so you would think that wouldn't have screwed it up for us.....

·3 years agoeBay gutted Terapeak once they acquired them. It used to be much more useful and give specific information per the top sellers. Now it has very few use cases , and is extremely inaccurate (misses a ton of orders).

·3 years agoIt does an excellent job for me! Where else can you get 2 years of eBay sales information that is better?
I have no interest in what the top sellers on eBay are, I want to know how many and at what prices things I'm considering selling have previously sold for.

·3 years ago@zamo-zuan, @nuclearomen, @lotzofuniquegoodies,.
I have no idea why you are not getting good results, as you have not provided any information about how you are searching, or any clue that might suggest why you don't get good results.
I have not had any difficulty getting good results, or in finding exactly what I am looking for when I search in Terapeak. You should stop posting incorrect information about this tool, because you obviously don't know how to use it. If you don't want to learn, that's fine. Your choice.

·3 years agoBecause Terapeak only gets results for a fraction of what is actually sold.
Because I used Terapeak before eBay took it over, and saw all the features that were removed. Such as being able to sort through the most popular categories and the most popular sellers per category, comparing your listings to theres to see exactly which listings were or were not the most profitable.
It used to have stats for your entire category being able to track a good amount of the GMV and be able to follow trends.
As well as you used to be able to see the top seller market share compared to the rest of the category to get an idea of how well the algorithms were working, and see which business models were most successful in the current algorithms.
And after they bought Terapeak, they removed these features (as well as a ton of others I hadn't mentioned), made it detect orders much worse than before, and after it showed the top seller market share plummet from > 40% to < 25% in less than a couple months, they removed all those statistics.
It's been completely refactored to focus on eBay's vertical categories, and no longer shows measurements for each site/section as well as category. No heatmaps, no graphs, and no trends that they used to have.
It's use case is much less than before, and even for the few use cases that it's intended for now, the statistics they show aren't significant if they are only factoring a smaller portion of eBay's listings. You used to be able to browse EVERY SINGLE LISTING and not be restricted to a single page of "top listings". Which - in regards to top listings - we have a number of top listings that aren't even appearing on Terapeak.
As a matter of fact, if I check the "top listings" in our primary category right now, none of the top 10 sellers even have a single listing appearing here. It claims there's only 18 listings that have more than 1 transaction - which is NOT TRUE. If you went by these numbers, you would be digging yourself in to a hole because these are in no way the most popular items in the category.
Incase you aren't aware, the features you see in Terapeak now were only two tabs of a much bigger suite of tools. They completely removed the rest (much the same as they did with the tools on Seller Hub that measured statistics for each item, and all the graphs/reports on the growth page).
Or just the fact that the statistics DON'T EVEN WORK:
I would appreciate it if there weren't insult tossed towards us for "not knowing how to use it". We've been using it for over 10 years and seen it degrade as time went on.

·3 years agoI don't care what it USED TO do. What difference does that make now?
My experience is what Terapeak does now. Which is exactly what I said it does, and what it is expected to do.
Terapeak can show you accurate results for recently sold listings, sold prices, and shipping prices, within the past 2 years. In comparison, eBay sold-items-search is not accurate for the number of sold listings or prices, and doesn't show shipping prices at all. There is no comparison.
Terapeak has changed. It works well now, within its limitations. If you don't want to learn how to use it NOW, fine.

·3 years ago"posting incorrect information" would be incorrect, because you believe it's incorrect doesn't mean it is. Terrapeak is crud for my items, and it's not hard to use so don't tell people they don't know how to use something when a 2 y/o could do it. If you sell common everyday stuff then terrapeak will likely have results for you, if you sell specialty stuff it's useless, and it's that simple.
lacemaker3
·3 years agoCRUD
Just because it doesn't work for you, doesn't mean that it's false. That only means you don't know how to use it.
I have not had any difficulty getting good information from Terapeak. That means that there is good information available.
If you can't get good information, that's your problem. Don't try to blame it on any one else.
Period. End of sentence.

·3 years agolol, your mad because others don't agree with you? child with child responses - you don't like because you don't know how to... great defense. But 3 people say otherwise. Aside from any reason other wise, why do you need terrapeak at all? Do you not know what you sell and the market(s) for those items? Pretty defensive about a crud tool you shouldn't even need. Don't care if you disagree, but don't tell people they don't know how to use something. You use it and get results, great, doesn't mean others do.

·3 years agoI really don't understand what Terapeak is or what value it adds. I do my own research. I don't need to pay more $$ for a monthly fee for data that may be manipulated that I can do myself.
lacemaker3
·3 years agoTerapeak shows you the actual number of sold items, the actual selling price and shipping cost paid by the buyers, which is not available by other searches. You can search for custom dates up to 2 full years of sold results. You can filter the results by listing format, what site they were listed on, where the buyers were located, and other options.
Terapeak is free for accounts that are registered as sellers. I believe you can sign up for extra features, but I have never done that. The free features are useful and reliable.
eBay sold-items search are completely unreliable, both for number of items and for the sale price. See my previous post.

·3 years agoThank you for the information.
I still find it as just more labor and questionable information. I do my own research and include my knowledge, research of the product, condition, & history to start a price.
When I go to list an item, I get the eBay notice suggesting a starting price based on recent sold similar item / history price which is lowball & nowhere close to my item & the condition it is in.
slippinjimmy
·3 years agoWhen you are searching, which eBay site are you searching? The default is ebay.com so you only see listing made on .com.
You can also search "all sites" (at the bottom of the dropdown), that will include any listings that were visible on .com regardless of which site they were listed on.
The regular eBay search using the sold filter works in the same way. This is why you may see more listings in an eBay search vs terapeak. If you use all sites on terapeak there is a good chance you will see MORE listings there than what you see in a regular sold search.

·3 years ago@turtleswares17,
Terapeak only shows sold items that were paid for, so if an item doesn't show up in Terapeak, it means that the buyer didn't pay for it.
Terapeak shows the actual selling price, and the actual shipping cost that the buyer paid, so if the item was sold to an offer, the price shown on Terapeak is correct (and the price in the eBay sold search is incorrect).
Terapeak only shows items that were sold on eBay and paid for, not items sold on other websites.
turtleswares17
OP3 years agoWould that mean 79 listing were not paid for out of 179, that seems like a high number but could be correct. Another example I search time tru on ebay search there is 3300 sold and on terapeak it states 4013, how could terapeaks be so much higher in this situation?
firstnew-88
·2 years agoAnother thing to take into account is refunds and returns. Once was a full refund has processed, an item will no longer show up in terapeak but will still show up as sold in an ebay completed/sold items search.
nuclearomen
·3 years agosearch results are actual sales (or no sales, since you can search both) terrapeak is bunch of **bleep**
lotzofuniquegoodies
·3 years ago@nuclearomen
Correct me if I am wrong but don't eBay's SOLDs include items that were never paid for in their mix? In speaking to another seller their sales of items routinely include items that seller told me that were never paid for. Not sure if they eventually disappear off the radar or not.

·3 years agoThe eBay sold-items search is completely unreliable.
sailinship
·3 years agoYou use to be able to figure out what that offer was by just changing the $ amount range you were searching for, and as you increased or decreased the amount, the listing would either show up, or drop off. But I don't think that works anymore.
lacemaker3
·3 years ago@sailinship,
There's no point in doing that, because all you have to do is search for the item in Terapeak and you can see exactly what the real selling price was. No need to play around trying to figure it out. Just search and see the results. Don't waste your time.
nuclearomen
·3 years ago@lotzofuniquegoodies if your asking me... my take is both sold items and terrapeak are junk, but especially terrapeak. Now for other sellers, it may the cream on top but for what I sell, it's junk. Don't need terrapeak any ways, been doing this for 25+ years I know what the stuff cost wholesale and what they go for retail and 3rd market so terra i don't even look at that junk anymore. Sold items now and then I will but many times it's the same as terra, no results, or they will have results for the unlimited version...which means no results for my limited versions. But as to them falling off radar, i believe they do after x amount of time... don't know what that time length is, if I used it more I'd be more up on stuff like that. I usually disregard past item sales anyways... market changes, what something sold for before doesn't mean that's what it's going for now, could be more, could be less... I instead search for items currently for sale, here, and discogs and take an average of those and set a price with taking into account what I paid for something and what it will cost in fees/shipping. That works best for me, but like said other sellers the terra and sold items maybe more useful depending what they are selling.

I've had zippo for success finding relevant (factual) info using Terrapeak. (Very important to test various word combos to find matches.a) might bring up a few...b) might bring up nothing. c) something entirely different.) Using eBay for research used to be acceptable but as of late more and more info is being hidden it's difficult to believe the accuracy. It's similar to search coming up with unrelated items and associated ads that aren't even in the neighbourhood of what I am trying to track down.

·3 years agoI don't think terapeak automatically updates every time there is an Ebay sell so never count on those numbers to be correct. Also Terapeak is actually very misleading so be careful. Typically, items show "higher" selling cost then you would ever get on Ebay. They are showing averages of items sold "everywhere" on the net.
rugerskick
·3 years agoTo be fair, terapeak defaults to hide excessive/extreme sale prices when it brings up its initial findings. So those are largely filtered out unless you decide to include them in.
lacemaker3
·3 years ago@rugerskick, where is that filter, please?
I thought that I might have changed the filter long ago, and saved the filters then. But I looked for it and couldn't find any way to filter out extreme sale prices.
@slippinjimmy, thanks for pointing out the "all sites" choice in the eBay site drop-down. I hadn't noticed that before.
rugerskick
·3 years agoI thought it was on terpeak, but it appears that only shows up if you are looking at your listings and hit research prices, the results/research screen that pops up has the "filter extreme prices" checkbox. You can expand the search range there up to 2 years just like terapeak, so I confused the location where the checkbox actually is.
lacemaker3
·3 years agoOK, so that's not a filter on Terapeak. I can't find anything like that on Terapeak. I am not actively selling, and that is not available anywhere so far as I can see.
If you don't want to use that filter, then don't check it.
