What is "BEST MATCH" ?

I sort by lowest and highest prices when I'm selling and buying; I don't know what their algorithm uses to decide the Best Match for me. Their default sort order appears to have Best Match at the top.

Just wanted to remind everybody - new and old sellers alike - to familiarize (or re-familiarize) yourself with what is basically the listing mechanics...

For me I was surprised by how the ebay search engine works from the buyer's perspective....

eBay Best Match algorithm considers a number of different factors:

How closely the listing matches the buyer's search terms
How popular the item is
The price of the item
The quality of your listing — description, photos, and so on
How complete the listing is
The listing terms of service, such as your return policy and handling time
Your track record as a seller

It USED to be (who was on top) items by sellers that were:

a.) did FREE shipping

b.) did FREE returns

c.) Were TOP rated

Then came along 'promotions'

Best Match is the default search results order. It's also an industry standard. As to what constitutes Best Match, like all search algorithms, that is propietary. BM has been around for MANY years now, nothing new about it.

I disagree that no one uses it. On the contrary, it's what most people use. Simply b/c it's the default & most users do not bother to change their search results order, only advanced users do that & even amongst advanced users, lots of us don't bother.

I didn't mean no one uses it, I was saying "no one does" referring to the OP saying they didn't know what their algorithm uses.

Correct. No one does.

I sort by lowest price, but I've never actually sorted by highest price when buying something.

It helps to get rid of the useless cheap irrelevant things that you didn't search for.
Many times, going down the page from highest irrelevant to relevant is a lot faster than going from lowest irrelevant to relevant.

I still prefer starting my real search from lowest relevant. With that, I find that it’s quicker going from lowest irrelevant (lowest-highest sorting) to lowest relevant versus going from highest irrelevant (highest-lowest sorting) to lowest relevant. I never prefer to start from highest relevant because I’ll always end up needing to see the lowest relevant in my search before buying. Many times I couldn’t care less what the highest relevant price is.
