WHAT IS ADVANTAGE TO CHARGING 4-10 TIMES MORE THAN ACTUAL SHIPPING COST?????????????
I know fee bay takes same cut. Whether I sell an item for $50 w/free ship or $40 with $10 shipping. I don't get the people charging like $100 for shipping an item that will be $10 to ship. Is there an advantage to selling something for $10 with $100 shipping???????????? As opposed to $110 with free shipping? I remember back in old days people would do it because shipping was not taxed. Those people still think its 2010?????

The only way to find out, is to ask the seller.
This is one of those reasons that the back button on websites was invented - I would find another seller.

OP9 months agoso you saying that the BUYER is not going to pay tax on a crazy ship charge ? IF seller does the 10 item with 100 ship charge? that on the 10 item + 100 ship and 7% tax buyer would only pay a total of $110.70 instead of $117 The seller FVF is same regardless

$10 with $100 shipping?
My sales tax owed: $0.60
As opposed to
$110 with free shipping?
My sales tax owed: $6.60
Many states still do not charge sales tax on shipping.

OP9 months agoI think u are wrong You are saying some states differentiate between shipping and item price?????????????????? EBAY do NOT for seller fees 10 for item price+100 shipping same as other way around or 110+ free ship BTW only 4 states do not tax items bought on EBAY

False. Five of the 50 United States do not impose any state-wide sales taxes on anything.
Alphabetically, those states are (1) Alaska*, (2) Delaware, (3) Montana, (4) New Hampshire, and (5) Oregon.
Geographically, west to east, those states are (1) Alaska*, (2) Oregon, (3) Montana, (4) Delaware, and (5) New Hampshire.
* In the state of Alaska, some local areas may charge a sales tax, but as a function of the state's government, Alaska does not impose sales taxes.

I would assume he would have felt the same about question marks.

·9 months agoIf you think an item is priced too high, don't buy it. Simple as that. What is the point of this?

·9 months agoAs to whether buyers will buy when there is high shipping.
Sold a large item....oversize......$34 sale price......total payment $212.......to the Isle of Man......via EIS.
Fortunately, I accidentally over estimated the size.....so made a bit on shipping.

·9 months agoIn the end it doesn't matter to me what they charge for shipping vs item price. I always consider the price of an item plus shipping and tax...the price of the item. I either like or dislike the total cost to me and decide whether to buy or not..........................

·9 months agoSome sellers have the UPS store or another package store pack and ship their items. Although $100 might sound extreme, if the item is large and bulking or fragile the packaging cost can force the total cost of shipping that high.

·9 months agoOn my buyer side I do not buy something where the shipping cost is more than the purchase cost. On my seller side I charge discounted flat shipping because I feel most buyers will walk away if shipping is exorbitant to the cost.

@rosemary6525
I remember sellers doing it because FVFs weren't charged. As a buyer (in Tennessee), my s&h has always been taxed.

·9 months agoadvantages and reasons behind this tactic:
1- Many buyers sort search results by "Price + Shipping: Lowest First". A seller listing a $100 item for $10 with $90 shipping might capture the attention of a buyer who only looks at the initial $10 price tag before clicking, effectively gaming the visual of a low entry price.
2- If a buyer returns an item for remorse (they just didn't like it), sellers are often allowed to withhold the original shipping cost from the refund. By charging $100 for shipping on a $10 item, a seller can technically keep $100 even if the item is returned, provided their policy allows it.
3- Some sellers use high flat rates as a buffer to cover expensive packing materials, labor, or insurance without inflating the item's perceived market value.
4- Many states now tax the total transaction, some buyers may still believe they are saving on sales tax if the item price is lower.

OP9 months agoWOW I did not think about a return for buyers remorse. I see what you are saying. I find it hard to believe that EBAY would allow a seller to charge $100 and 10 for item and if buyer returned it they would only get $10 back.
Seller would get NEG FB and buyer lose $100 or big part of price. I was referring to someone charging $100 for a 10oz tennis racket
