Way overpriced item just sold.
Woke up this morning to sale of a Starbucks Hawaii item.
I haven't sold one in a while so I decided to do some comparison shopping on ebay.
I found at least 20 on ebay. I'm way overpriced.
Mine was $35 + $15 shipping = $50.
The lowest one I found of the exact same item was $25 with free shipping = $25.
My buyer paid double what he could have.
Of course i'm not complaining about the sale.
Besides my charming personality and stunning good looks, just wondering why someone would buy it from me. 😉

·5 months agoIn the past week I have sold two items at full price that I had placeholder prices on.
One was a set of 4 Magic cards that would normally be worth about $8, but someone had meticulously hand painted extensions to the artwork so it covered most of the card, they sold for $299 in 2 days. I had expected it to take a year to sell and for it to be on an offer.
The other was a Warhammer Fantasy "Dark Elf" army of 60 figures in a case that previously didn't sell for $300 several years ago when I sold the other 9 cased warhammer armies from that purchase. I didn't want it getting marked way down by automatic markdown schedule, so I put it at $999 to await offers, over time it got marked down to $840 by my markdowns and then sold at that price.
The buyer of the magic cards actually apparently saw my youtube video where I showed the sale and messaged me to say he was perfectly happy with what he had paid for them.

·5 months ago@adamcartwright @chapeau-noir I love those stories!
A few weeks ago I sold a random tie-died bunny plush that sold at Walmart a few years ago. The buyer sent a message and told me his daughter had left hers at Chuck-E-Cheese by mistake, and when they went back to get it, someone else has taken it instead of turning it in. They were desperate to find another one because their daughter was so upset and would not stop crying. I had already made a trip to the post office, but I grabbed the plush and took it over there. I sent it priority mail. A few days later I got a picture of him and his smiling daughter when they gave her the plush.
That random plush that nobody would have picked up to sell was probably worth a couple hundred dollars in that moment. The only reason I listed it is because it was in a bag of plush I bought and I'm a sucker for listing everything if I paid for it.
I made $10, but more importantly I made a little girl smile again. Cheers.

·5 months agoYears ago, when I was working for a warehouse that sold mostly toys and sporting goods, inventory was mostly all listed in about 8 categories.
When an item sold out, in order to hold the template alive, till more inventory came in to avoid selling something we didn't have in stock or making the customer wait.
We would change the title to something inert and obscure we were fairly certain no one was searching for. Maybe a dead lightbulb, or a rusty bolt, etc. Then simply leave the rest blank or a one or two word description and set the price in the stratosphere like $999 or something. Three times we had people hit BIN and pay. No clue why but we shipped what ever thing it was in the pic often with a free gift included worth something. One got no feedback, one got a complaint that they got more than then ordered and weren't paying any extra for the free gift, and one left 'Received as ordered' as feedback. We then made a rule that any place holder items had to be unshippable and the price at $9,999 or more. That ended any buyers gambling on what they would receive.
That was some years ago though, buyers were more regular then and we were shipping 600 items a week on two accounts.
I now work for a liquidator and sales lately have been about nil on 8 accounts.

·5 months agoThat's why that seller wanted $295,300 for that elusive DVD I am looking for! I know it isn't worth that that much and I am not going to buy it. I will wait for the price to drop to around $10 .. I cannot be fooled.
Thanks for revealing this tactic 😎😎

Seriously?! That's crazy.
But if you were trying to preserve a template, why did you leave it all blank or just a 1-2 word description

Don’t you sell Hawaii ham in tins?
Do you have palm trees as a logo/ storefront?
Gotta work with what we got.
Over here, it’s not a lot.

·5 months agoThey never saw the other ones because they search by newest first and yours just renewed, or ending soonest and yours was going to, or even best match - and since yours makes ebay more money, yours was the best match and thus was shown on top.

This is due to an annual increase in careless shoppers experienced during this period, which has caused processing delays.

·5 months agoI'm glad this post is here. I can't tell you how many times I've read other posts by posters insisting the only way to make a sale is by having the lowest prices. It's just not true. It's nice to see yet another piece of anecdotal evidence to support my own position.
I've never been the lowest priced and, back when I was buying, I never looked for the lowest prices. I looked for the best value, but the best value is often the item that is not the lowest priced. I shopped for authentic items from reputable sellers who had policies that were fair. I looked for sellers who might have been a tad more expensive but had feedback that showed that 1) they actually knew what they were selling, 2) knew how to ship what they were selling, and 3) had a history of sourcing/picking/selling the kinds of items that I was looking for.
As a seller today, I try to abide by the same standards I expected from the sellers I used to buy from. As such, that means that my prices will not always be the lowest, but my customers know they will get what they've paid for and that if something goes awry I will address the issue quickly and professionally.
There's a big difference between "a good deal" and "cheap".

·5 months agoIt could be they landed on your item first and just bought it. The buyer wasn't price sensitive and didn't want to take the time to shop around. They found exactly what they wanted and felt it was worth it to them. Congrats on a great sale.

·5 months agoThis is nothing new. Simply put - eBay makes NO SENSE. So often, I check sold items to see what my item might be worth. I will see 1 sold for $35 & another sold for $8. Meanwhile, someone else will have it listed for $6 & it sits in limbo. All in the same condition. It gives me nor anyone else any indication of what price our item(s) should be listed at. I had a hockey sticker set listed for $75 & saw 1 sell for $150. Same condition. There is no "mystery." It is just random nonsense. lol

·5 months ago@inhawaii Congrats on the sale! If I didn't have a stack of stuff to list tonight before I go on another pick at 9am Thursday, I would make you a MEME.
cardsforauction
·5 months agoLots of reasons. Some buyers just want the item now and did not care and bought it. Some look at feedback and go with good feedback and read the neutrals and negatives (I do). Also, maybe buyer had a bad experience with some of the other seller(s) and decided you're a better option. Location, shipping time, and quality, etc. Who knows, but if the transaction goes through, you made a little money. Good for you!

·5 months agoYour listing may have greater credibility.
I frequently include information in my listings which educate the buyer about what they are buying.
For some types of item, there are two tiers of sellers offering the item. A higher priced tier who include more information in their listings and more images, and a lower priced tier who include less information and provide vague condition descriptions.
I am among the lower priced in the higher tier, I get more for the same item with regularity.

·5 months agoI would not be so bombastic about selling a overpriced item and then posting about it on this forum. Buyers also read this forum and will probably think twice about buying anything from you. I would think twice about posting information like this. Shows what kind of person you are. Most sellers would be happy that they made a good profit, but flapping you lips about it is just wrong.

I would not be so bombastic about selling a overpriced item.
First of all, i'm not "bombastic" about selling a overprced item.
Buyers also read this forum and will probably think twice about buying anything from you. I would think twice about posting information like this.
Do you know the chances of that? If I should happen to get a potential buyer who happens to wants to buy something from me change their mind after reading this, so be it.
Shows what kind of person you are.
Someone bought a item from me that was priced higher than others. What kind of person does that make me?
Most sellers would be happy that they made a good profit.
I'm confused. Should be ashamed that I sold something that was overpriced -or- happy that I made a good profit?
but flapping you lips about it is just wrong.
The reason I shared with oither sellers is...
*To hear their opionions on why they think someone would buy it from me at a higher price.
*To share that you don't need to have the lowest price in order to sell something.
You are entitled to think it's wrong.

Your post was all about you. No one knows why your item sold at a higher price than others and no one cares.

·5 months agoI care! It's always nice to hear what my fellow board sellers' stores are experiencing! It helps me manage my own store and learn how to navigate eBay better.
Why wouldn't we want to discuss something like this? It's a peculiar occasion that might warrant some insight. Whether to offer congratulations, or mull over why folks are willing to pay more for something when a cheaper option might be available. Maybe they made a mistake, or maybe they knew full well and chose a more reputable seller on purpose. It's something we can talk about and learn from!
Speaking of, congrats, on the surprising sale, @inhawaii!

OP5 months agoWhat do I have to brag about? I didn't do anything but make a sale.
In case you missed it, this thread isn't about just making a sale,
it's about making a sale when there are many others priced way less.
If nobody cares, there wouldn't be several pages of discussion about it.
I'm sorry if you don't approve of my post or if I offended you in some way.

·5 months agoWhat can I say? It's not a yes/no question. I am always amused by Jamie's posts and look forward to them. I know, for example, that he bragged about giving birth to a 50 pound gorilla child, but about making a sale? I think he sold all of the shirts with that baby pic on them for a huge profit.
I commend him on making some $$ on eBay - I can't think of any seller who would be disappointed with that, and wonder what your problem is.
kibble-net
·5 months agoTo be fair, they already thought twice about it. They could have bought from many other sellers but they chose him.
Have you stopped to consider that price is not the only consideration for all buyers? I would happily pay a few bucks extra to know I'm buying from a reputable seller who isn't going to sit on my parcel for a week before bringing it to USPS.
Your comment smells very salty.

·5 months agoWhy would you think yours was overpriced? You say out of 20 like items yours was $50 with shipping and the lowest was $25 with shipping. Where did yours fit in with the rest? It seems your price of $35 is not far off except you charge shipping. The seller asking $25 including shipping may gain maybe $10 because they still have to pay shipping.

·5 months agoUsually when I look at comps for anything there is NEARLY ALWAYS some unicorn comp that makes no sense. I attribute these to impulsive people who buy what is in front of them without checking prices at all.
Like, a DVD will have hundreds listed, 12 sold, 11 of them under $7 shipped and the 12th one for $15 shipped.
Unfortunately you can't survive on unicorn sales. Too many sellers out there already trying and failing to do that.

Further proof that one absolutely does not need to offer the lowest prices to make a sale. People are motivated to buy for a variety of reasons, trust is one them. If you can't get an authentic Starbucks Hawaii item from @inhawaii, then you can't get it anywhere. 🙂

·5 months agoEBay is shopped for price much more so than Amazon.
Example: boss tells the company purchaser or administration type to buy this and we need it by Friday. Person tasked with buying, quickly finds it on AMZ and buys it right away with no regard for price.
It is an instant purchase type of deal with AMZ. No looking back.
The savvy buyers shop on eBay for the best deals. I resemble that.
Remember, @inhawaii has all that sexy going for him as well. Must be nice......
grann-4629
·5 months agoIf my boss told me time was of the essence, the last place I would look is eBay. The item might be there, the price might be good and even the shipping might be free, but, it's still going to take a week or two to get there. The one on Amazon maybe a bit more expensive but it will be here tomorrow. Boss will be happy.
Still, you meet the nicest people on eBay 😎
adamcartwright
·5 months ago@inhawaii
That's a great result for you.
I've had that happen in reverse.
My item -- better condition, better photos, better seller rating -- loses out to a higher priced listing.
I think some buyers just buy the first thing they see?
soh.maryl
·5 months agoSometimes a buyer has had a previous good experience with a particular seller, so they continue patronizing that seller, even though his prices may run a little higher. I do not buy much any more, but when I did, there were several sellers I found always reliable who shipped promptly, so did not mind paying a little more for a worry-free transaction.
redlinear
·5 months agoYour buyer never saw the cheaper ones.
That seller will be along shortly to explain their theory about eBay hiding their items.
And they may not be all that wrong.
christworks
·5 months agoeBay does not hide the fact that all listings do not appear even when a key word search matches. That would be "hiding" a listing. I'm not sure why people find it such a mystery. It isn't in eBay's interest to show every single listing of a certain item. This is why when researching comps it is better to look at Product Research than use eBay's search engine which is designed for buyers, not sellers.

That seller - eBay hiding their items.
And they may not be all that wrong."
Have searched for something in the morning, got distracted, left page sitting. Used different page to do same search hours later and the item now on top - cheaper days old auction - wasn't shown on first search.
Have told people to search 'precise wording' by lowest first - our listing was shown to some but not all.
My sister is writer with her books on ebay - told people search book title/author - big time sellers copies always shown, HER autographed copies sometimes not.
