Warning: Avoid Selling to Mexico â€“ Import Tax & RFC Issues

We would like to caution fellow cross-border sellers about selling to buyers in Mexico (MX).

Based on repeated experiences, weâ€™ve found that a majority of MX buyers refuse to pay import taxes, customs duties, and fail to provide RFC numbers, which are mandatory for customs clearance in Mexico.

This has led to:

Rejected or returned parcels
Negative feedback
Unnecessary disputes and losses

Recommendation: Unless your business is equipped to deal with these challenges, it is advisable to avoid selling to Mexico altogether or clearly state your policy regarding import duties and RFC requirements in your listings.

This is a heads-up to help others avoid the same costly issues.

I ship to Mexico via EIS (ebay international shipping).

Those things would not affect me.

That is a great point for those who may be concerned about selling internationally. I wonder how long it will be until eBay removes the seller protection from those sales. I am surprised they let it go for this long. IMHO

@jdm-motorparts Why would you not sign up for the EIS program?

I am not at all surprised. EIS is a Nguyen â€“ Nguyen for buyers and sellers and eBay. Sellers need a reasonable performance level to participate. Letâ€™s pretend that those sellers have a one percent INAD rate. So, eBay takes a loss on one percent of those sales. But, 99% out â€“ and eBay gets their listing fees. It doesnâ€™t take a lot of sellers signing up for this program for it to be a no-brainer, slam dunk for all involved.

That does not factor in unscrupulous buyers or the cost of doing business. (infrastructure and payroll at hubs) It will be interesting how eBay deals with these protections for sellers if buyers decline shipments because of added tariffs/taxes.

It is a smart way for eBay to use it as a way to promote international sales but there will be a day when the costs exceed the revenue. IMHO
