Vintage socks
Just had a lot of 1970s knee high tube socks pulled...even though the category allows for used.
Not sure I understand what is going on here.
I see the policy page...is this just another leftover ebay glitch?
That picture BTW is the ebay suggested product match when I put vintage 1970s tube socks in the search bar for listing if you want to replicate it and see for yourself.

OP4 months agoI find it curious that people get squicked out by used socks that haven't been worn in 40 years but not sandals. 🙄
did you know there is a category on ebay right now for pre-owned women's tights?
The entire bottom half of a lady is fine hygiene wise for used tight fitting clothing items but below the knee on a man is not? Would tights get pulled if a they had been worn by a man?
If it made even a lick of sense it would be much easier to avoid getting items pulled without needing to have a photographic memory of prohibited items.

·4 months ago@grand-and-glorious-purpose When dealing with vintage items, something that is new old stock is often listed as used, because the packaging may need damaged or worn. Or you might have unworn items that are vintage but would be considered pre-owned. I think this is why those conditions are available. You have to make clear they are unworn.

·4 months agoI can't tell you the rhymes or reasons, I know I would not purchase used socks & underwear, But just the fact that they are rejecting it, I would not try listing it again because you could put your account in jeopardy & no used socks would be worth that.

·4 months agoEven Good Will won't take used socks as donations. Hard to understand as both eBay and good will sell bikinis, which are basically female bra top and underwear bottom. All I can say for sure that is if eBay removes one of your items, accept that fact and do not relist.

·4 months agoGoodwill is made up of 150 or so different "chapters". Each has different rules on what is accepted, what they sell vs what they put online, etc.
I remember going to a GW in a tiny rural town 10 years ago and they had used underwear complete with old racing stripes on racks.
I wish I was making this up.

Goodwill standards are uniform, no matter what district they are in.
How do I know? I am a former auditor. One of our clients is Goodwill. I did inspections to ensure donation standards were met. Anything like what you described should have been tossed in the dumpster if it was not caught at the time of donation.

·4 months agoThey still sell the canvas Chuck Taylors at most fashion stores. They are still very popular. I am sure people can still buy the knee length socks. If someone can sell old, used socks and underwear, more power to them. Do they have to wear the 70's short athletic trunks as well.

·4 months agoThese are athletic socks. I used to wear them in the 70's. If I go and look at my mom's house my underwear drawer may be still there along with old sweat socks. Who knew people will buy used socks and underwear.

·4 months agoBecause "vintage" isn't actually indicative of age. It should be accompanied by the year/time. Of 1970's vintage, of 2020's vintage, etc.

·4 months agoThere was quite a business in selling used , smelly socks here at one time. Then all used socks and underwear got banned. The bots must have caught it.

But if listing used socks violates eBay policy, then why does eBay include a "Preowned" category for Socks and allow people do designate their listings in that category?

·4 months agoSeems to be how it's worded. Leaves up all confused. Could be the difference between preowned and worn. That could be what the AI it trying to tell.

I thought of that, but the clear definition of "Preowned" in the listing includes the word "used."
A bunch of listings are stated to be used in the hand-written descriptions -- e.g. worn once, light wear, etc.

·4 months agoeBay's " strike box " does vary some. Most likely it's the wording. They don't seem to have an issue with Doc Johnson items. I once had a mirror removed as a DVD copying device.

·4 months agoBack in the day I purchased a big stash of vintage 30s - 40s era men's underwear and socks. Most were still in the package and sold great, but there were many socks that had no packaging. I was able to sell them too and pretty sure at that time I could list as used. I recall selling four pair of men's socks for $100., so fetishes don't bother me a bit. 😁 I also had men's sock garters that sold well.

I lucked into a big stash of ladies thigh high nylons from the 50s and 60s ...fancy seam up the back, colored toes and heels.
People that sold them to me thought they rolled me at $1 per package.
I wish I had them all back to sell again.

Strange people are into that and used underwear and such.

OP4 months agoyeah, yeah, saw that, answers zero questions.
You can choose the "used" condition and ebay suggests it to you as a condition when listing vintage socks, just like the picture I provided.
So which is it?
Is the used condition a glitch, a left over bit of code someone forgot to remove?
Is it just a stupid rule we have to follow because "reasons"
Is the policy not current?
I mean it would one of the most ebay things ever to be dinging users with policy violations for letting them choose "used' as a condition for something that can't be sold as used.
Right up there when ebay let buyers who haven't paid for their items open INR cases
