Verify Edgar Allen Poe - The Raven
I am trying to determine the value of this book:
 
 
 
 
 
 I’ve seen what I think is the same printing at Abe’s Books and they are selling for around 4-6k. I bought it from a book store for $250 which seems odd. Thank you

The Raven and the Philosophy of Composition. San Francisco and New York: Paul Elder, n.d. [1907]
4to, quarter suede over black paper, front board and spine decoratively stamped in black and lettered in gilt, t.e.g., original dust jacket and slipcase. Photogravure Edition. Illustrated with 12 photogravure plates, including frontispiece. Light offsetting from plates; otherwise fine.
Property from the Private Library of Dr. Simon G. Stein II, Muscatine, Iowa.

·3 years agoIn 2011, one sold for $60 at Hindman's Auctions in Chicago.
Edited to add: Auction estimate was $100-$200.

Useful but not a good way to know the current price.
I prefer AddAll which has even more contributors, but again, those are the Unsolds.
AddAll has three copies- the $4500 you saw (but listed seven times), another at $203, and a third which may be a different edition at $75 listed on Amazon.

OP3 years agoThank you! I think the $203 one is a mistake as only 1000 of these were printed in 1907. Mine seems to be in better shape than the similar one on Abes. I also think that reprints of this version are listed in same posts, causing confusion on actual worth. Thanks again for your quick reply.

There were 1000 copies listed.
If 1001 people want it, the price will be high.
If 100 people want it, the price will be low.

·3 years agoThis is a much later reprint of the Raven first published in 1845 which might be worth 150 thousand in the original wrappers and in fine condition. $250 for this pretty book is top retail.
