Vegan leather.
I sell something make of "vegan leather".
I didn't give it much thought but I thought that vegan leather must come from vegetarian cows that don't eat meat. LOL
Over the weekend my friends schooled me that vegan leather is fake leather.
Who's the idiot that decided to call it vegan leather? 😉

Faux leather does not necessarily = vegan leather
The terms are not interchangeable.
If it is vegan leather, that does not necessarily mean the product is vegan, just that the textile is vegan.
The faux leather may have a backing which is glued on with non-vegan glue (ðŸ´) and have other non-vegan elements. The finished product may have non-vegan elements even if it's made with vegan leather.
When in doubt, always call it faux leather unless you can 100% confirm from the manufacturer's info that it's vegan leather.

·1 year agoHawaii has meat eating cows? Fake leather has been called a lot of things depending on how it is made and the composition of the materials. Germany can take credit for the first fake leather but not sure about the Vegan label.

·1 year agoNo idea when it was first applied to leather, but the word vegan has been around for decades. It was coined in the 1940s as a shortened version of vegetarian.

·1 year agoBeing a vegan is about a lot more than just food. Vegans don't (try not to) use any animal products of any kind from their food to their clothing to their furniture and everything in between.
Vastly different from being a vegetarian which is about food and nothing else.

·1 year agoI understand vegan is a lot more than food. I was vegan for about 20 years. I didn't use leather or eat honey, etc. I was answering someone who said vegan derived from the word vegetarian and implied it was the same.

·1 year agoCows are vegetarian ruminants, but they are not vegan. They drink their mother's milk when a calf (if they are allowed to), and vegans don't do dairy
So that's a really stupid label for imitation leather. But a pretty funny post.

The thing about vegans is consent.
They believe that without the consent of the cow/goat/kangaroo, it is unethical to collect and drink milk.
Since a human can give consent, it is ethical for a vegan to drink human milk.
Then it all gets pretty meta and I have a nice lie down in a dark room with a glass of Madeira for company.

·1 year agoSimply to increase market value/desirability as mentioned previously by many of the other posters.
In example=
Sable is actually Weasel. Can't see someone paying 6 figures for a "Weasel" coat. the most expensive paint brushes are "Sable." Hundreds of dollars for a "Weasel" brush would be a much harder sell.
One better, Nutria Mink is actually a long-haired Rat. Hard to picture a fashion model stalking the runway in this seasons must have Rat coat.
All just marketing. Vegan as a moniker is just much more marketing sexy in these here times.

·1 year ago"Pleather" is sooooo 90s. The term came up a couple of times in Sex and the City.
I had an argument with my vegan nephew about "plant milk" like soy or almond. Plant beverage is more accurate.
And "plant butter". It's margarine. Or "plant spread" . Or "vegan spread". Although the kid was right that most margarine contains a little butter, probably for flavour.
I noticed that our supermarket now carries only plant butters, which do not have any butter in them (!) except for what I call "cooking margarine", the one that comes in a solid block I use for baking since the soft spreads don't work right.

·1 year agoI'll never forget sitting in a theatre during a quiet performance, and the two people in front of me and someone next to me were wearing pleather jackets. Every time they shifted or moved, their jackets would make groaning squeaking noises, and all three were about as squirmy as a bored 3 year old.

·1 year agoThe textiles industry has always had these kind of silly names, similar to the made-up colours I find in paint chips. I even recall reading an 18th century diary where someone was kvetching about a purplish colour that was called, for some reason, something like "emerging mist". 😖

Then Previously owned.
Now it's an automotive dismantling and recycling facility.

·1 year agoAlcantara is another fun one in this vein - often touted as a luxury product, with it's "made in Italy" status used in much the same way a certain kind of sparkling wine can only come from one area of France, but...it's really pretty much the same micro-fiber suede-like polyurethane/polyester mix material that's been around since the 70s. 😂

Now... you want a real mind bender? Ponder that they actually make "Vegan" Sugar.
The reasoning kind of blows my mind. Because some sugars are filtered through activated charcoal, and that charcoal comes from what once was animal bones.... it can't be vegan if it's filtered that way.

·1 year agoI used to have a girlfriend. Not real smart, but she had other skills that made it worthwhile to keep her around. For a while anyway.
I had her convinced that Naugahyde came from the Naga mammal. They are herd animals. In different colors. To get orange Naga, you had to breed a yellow one and a red one. A green would take a blue and a yellow.
They are raised primarily in Australia ... no Montana cowboy would work with a herd of Naga, so they were only raised in Australia, where their cowboys are less discerning. (Sorry to all you Aussies out there, but you know I'm right.)
The meat was sold to McDonalds corporation to be mixed with other meats to make Big Macs.
Very profitable operation.
She was willing to invest.
But, we were only 19 so ...

Probably some guy that has an aversion to "other than English" languages and would find it difficult to use the French term "FAUX". Calling something FAKE is likely not a good selling/advertising point.

·1 year agoI used to work for a company that sold car care/detailing/cleaning supplies and always loved bursting bubbles by telling people who asked about what to use for their vegan leather seats in their Teslas or whatever that any plastic cleaner will do because that's pretty much all it really is.
Also when you get people who opt for "vegan leather" because of their deeply held personal beliefs about the environment, politics etc...it's fun to see the look on their faces when you explain the chemicals and petroleum compounds involved in making polyurethane or polyvinyl chloride materials.

·1 year agoI hear you. My son and daughter in law informed me that they were vegan and stopped using products that involved animals in the manufacture.
You should have seen the looks on their faces when I told them the tires on their cars are made using charcoal made from horse and cow bones as part of the process. Then their bed for one...not vegan. To get a vegan bed I believe one has to have a prescription (Boy in the bubble type scenario) because of liability issues. They are very flammable and doctors are extremely reluctant to prescribe one for liability issues. It seems commonly used fire supressants are somehow animal based.
Boy that was a fun afternoon (for me at least) LOL.

·1 year agoIt's a word game.
Buyers will pay a lot of money for a designer "vegan leather" jacket whereas nobody would be interested in buying a "polyurethane jacket". Same thing with "faux", i.e. "faux pearls", "faux fur", even "faux leather". "Faux" sounds much classier and appealing than "fake".
Years ago, "French Ivory" dressing table items were popular. "French Ivory" was a type of plastic. Who wants to buy a plastic dresser set when you can buy a "French Ivory" dresser set?!

·1 year agoI cannot recall where, but some years back I read an article in a science magazine that argued that the line separating herbivores and carnivores was not as solid as many believe. My understanding (I once owned a small horse farm and my neighbors were dairy farmers) is that cows do not require meat or meat byproducts, but that they will eat such things if presented with same. Likewise, my dog loves carrots and blueberries (but not cucumbers).
(Not sure how I remembered that bit of esoterica... I often cannot remember why I came downstairs to the kitchen.)

·1 year agoWe had a dog that would eat blackberries right of the thorny bushes. He would literally only grab the ripest ones. It was a hoot picking the berries and fighting over the best ones with a 100 plus pound beast.
