USPS® rate update effective September 19, 2026
Summary: mam98031 expressed frustration over an early USPS rate increase that typically occurs in October, highlighting significant shipping cost hikes. biggymoe and others remarked on practices affecting these changes, while tsme35 noted a temporary holiday price adjustment beginning October 4. There was discussion about the implications for sellers, with alpinesigns and others concerned about covering costs amid frequent increases. Additionally, stephenmorgan mentioned potential leadership changes at USPS, speculating future impacts on rates. Conversations also touched on competitive shipping options and the challenges of managing costs as e-commerce platforms and sellers adapt to continuous shipping rate fluctuations.
They have done it again. Yet another rate increase, this one is a month early because we normally get one in October. This sure has been a heck of a summer with increases. Below is the Announcement from Ebay.
The United States Postal Service is making rate adjustments for select Ground Advantage and Priority Mail shipments effective September 19, 2026. These changes do not apply to rural ZIP Codes.
Ground Advantage
Rates will increase by $0.10 for packages 0-2lbs for Zones 1-8
Rates will increase from $0.27 - $2.28 for packages 3-5lbs for Zones 1-8
Priority Mail
Rates will increase from $0.73 - $4.35 for packages weighing up to 10lbs shipping to Zone 8
Flat rate package rates will increase by $0.30 for zones 1-8
The eBay shipping calculator will automatically update with the new rates when they take effect on September 19, 2026.
We’ll continue to keep you updated as shipping rates change so you have the latest information as quickly as possible.
As always, thank you for selling on eBay.

·3 days ago · EditedWhy? Just why? It's now costing $8.24 to ship a 9 oz. package from OK to AL! This is not directly eBay's fault, per se. Just really annoyed at USPS right now.

·1 week agoI've been selling on Ebay for over 15 years. I usually can eat the increases, but this is getting to be too much to continue selling. I would love Ebay to make new contracts that lower the fees for us.
mam98031
OP1 week agoYou should never "eat" any shipping costs @poshaffair1 . All sellers are in the same boat as you. I do stated shipping and buyers are still buying. If it were true that no one would buy anymore, then we would all be shutting down soon, to include Ebay and other sites.
I'm not trying to take away from the importance of these changes, because they are VERY important. Buyers will get use to it and we will survive. These rate increases don't just apply to us, they are universal for all sellers that sell stuff they need to ship to the buyer.

·1 week agoEbay is making it easier and easier for me to look for other avenues to sell my items. I guess I am a creature of habit, because I will use something until I am forced to look elsewhere, then I am always amazed what I find.
mam98031
OP1 week ago@gogrizzzzz How is this Ebay's fault? Why would you leave Ebay for something you should be charging your buyers for in the first place?
Are you of the opinion that other similar sites are not faced with the same challenges of carriers increasing rates?

·1 week agoI still don't understand why ebay can't set up a way to do a surcharge on rural zipcodes. USPS has to have a database which has all those zips.
mam98031
OP1 week agoCould be the current contract they are under with USPS. I have no knowledge of that contract or for what length of time the contract is for, I'm just saying that could be a reason. When any company negotiates rates, there is a contract that gets created for a certain duration.

·2 weeks agoFor us, the increases will result in 20% of our buyers paying the same as the day before [media], and 99% of the remaining 80% paying ten cents more.
According to the post office people we talk with, the beginning of the end for the PO was the lost of those [let's say at the time] thirty cents each 'letters and postcards' - tiny light weigh items each taking up a minuscule amount of space - and the increase in boxes costing, again at the time, maybe $2.50, each taking up the space of hundreds those tiny letters and postcards.
Today - how many number ten envelopes, each with an eight two cent stamp, would fit into the space of a Chewy's or amazon box that ships for $5 to 8 dollars?
Think about the size of a box of 100 or 150 #10 envelopes.
Also printing meter labels when there are hundreds of dollars of already paid for stamps in the drawer.
If the post office 'had brains' it would follow the 'mint' [coins] and their proof sets deal, and issue some special 'lick to stick' stamps that can be steamed off the envelope to maybe get kids collecting again. At one time ton's of money was tied up in 'collected' stamps. About 3-5% of the Elvis/Marilyn/Beatles stamps ever got mailed.
OK, time to open the real store.
mam98031
OP2 weeks ago · Edited@steve_stuff You think it is cheaper to run a Brick & Mortar store than it is a virtual one? Chances
Changesare you are incorrect on that. Running a B&M can be far more expensive.steve_stuff
·2 weeks agoNever mentioned anything about the cost of operating the store, just that I had to start 'operating' it.
But you are correct - $45 a month for internet is less then the $800+ in property tax along with monthly costs. But the store makes more in a month then all the ebay IDs do in a year.
mam98031
OP1 week ago@steve_stuff If you are only seeing a 10 cent increase for the minority of your buyers, you aren't considering the huge jumps in pricing that happened over the summer. In the spring, something I could ship for around $5.50 or so increased to over $8 earlier in the summer. We have had 3-4 increased this past summer and one more coming late next week.
bolensparts-360
·2 weeks agoI may just start phasing out the ground advantage on listings as its pricing itself higher than what the quality level of service is and just go with Priority like we used to do when we first sold here , Currently we are offering slow cheap ground advantage and priority or UPS for shipping .
mam98031
OP2 weeks agoPriority is going up the first week of next month too. I posted the changes happening on October 4th on this thread. You may want to review them before making a decision on your best approach to all of this. Keeping in mind that your BUYER is paying for the increase or should be, not you.

·2 weeks agoHow can Usps make any profits, everytime I'm there there is always 1 person who comes in with their reusable shopping bag & wipes out every shipping envelope padded or not & every size box from small to large and then I travel to 4 locations and they're all wiped out clean as well, and there isn't a charge for any of it or a per person per day limit.. So how can they make money... no other shipping services provides thousands in packaging materials for free... I receive packages constantly that priority padded mailers are used in place of bubble wrap... Definitely not a profitable business model so of course they will raise the fees continuously to cover all the unlimited free shyt... LOL
participatrophy
·2 weeks ago · EditedFedEx, UPS, DHL all provide free branded packaging materials for express shipments too. USPS continuously raises fees to cover an albatross of unfireable incompetence. So you're right, they are indeed fueling an unlimited free bleepmobile. But yeah the Priority packaging is drops in a bucket.

·2 weeks ago".....to cover an albatross of unfireable incompetence." Wow, as a retired USPS employee after 33 years, you hit the nail on the head. mam98031
OP2 weeks agoHighly likely that has very little to do with the problem of USPS not being profitable for a couple decades. Chances are far higher it is the rise of electronic delivery of stuff and the need for USPS isn't necessary for a huge amount of document deliveries. That is a big factor in how this all started.
There are many other legit reasons why they find themselves in the situation they are in. To try and blame this on the quality of the employees of the agency is simply unfair and very unlikely to have much of anything to do with the problem. With that said, most large companies have a certain amount of this going on, so it is highly likely it is a very small portion of why this is happening.

·2 weeks agoI'd report those sellers and their return addresses to USPS and I'd hit their feedback!
We're all paying for those miscreants.
mam98031
OP2 weeks agoAnother reason why USPS is having so much trouble losing money is all these FAKE tracking numbers. Many of those packages make it through their system, which is a cost with no money being paid to actually pay for services rendered. This is a huge cost to USPS.

·2 weeks agoAnd yet one of Ebay's competitors has free shipping - how does that even work?
mam98031
OP2 weeks agoWhat? Not a single company out there literally gets Free Shipping. Not a one. They all cost money. Whether they charge the customer separately for that shipping is a different statement all together. Some do not, but the cost is the same, we ALL pay to use a Carrier to ship an item, without exception.
Even Mercari recently announced increases in their flat shipping rates. Poshmark is likely not far behind.

mam98031
OP1 week agoThere isn't a lot of difference there @sfau because the buyer on Vinted pays shipping. Same here, buyer pays shipping whether the seller uses Free Shipping, Calculated shipping or Stated shipping.
Just two different sites that have two different ways for buyers to pay shipping.

·2 weeks ago · EditedWhat happened to the rates eBay negotiated? How is the usps able to go back on any discounts, raise the rates and do so again and again in such a short period of time? There needs to be legal consequences.
mam98031
OP2 weeks agoYou are talking about two different things. When rates are "negotiated", they are for a specific period of time. As for rate increases, it is likely this is covered in the contract Ebay is under with the Carrier for that specific period of time. If the contract covers the regular price increases that the Carrier has, then there is nothing illegal here. Since USPS has been doing this at least 3 times a year for well over a decade, it is likely it is legal and within the rules controlled by the contract.
But the increases are just nuts this year, there is no doubt!!!
alpinesigns
·2 weeks agoagreed we didn;t even get any time to adjust our sales cost since there is a increase more losses for us business sellers
mam98031
OP2 weeks agoI'm not sure what you define as a "business seller", but this increase applies to ALL sellers shipping items via these methods. There are not exceptions. Any seller that sells on a regular basis is in fact a business seller. All transactions on Ebay are business transactions as there are no personal transactions here.
It is quite possible that USPS did not notify Ebay any sooner about this increase as it is an unusual one and I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't hear a peep about this before hand from anywhere. Ebay gains nothing by keeping such important info to themselves, in fact as you stated, it hurts sellers.
I use the Bulk Editor to adjust my shipping rates. It is highly likely it can help you as well get this done in a timely manner. Good Luck to all.

·2 weeks agoThat is extremely low for what is essentially a CEO of a giant corporation. I don't want the government to waste money, but I think they actually don't pay the high level people enough to attract the best talent. To compare the CEOs of UPS and Fed Ex make more like 20 million a year. There is no way that the Postal Service can attract the top talent in logistics management when they aren't even on the same planet when it comes to salary.
Example, the CEO of Heartland Express Inc a regional trucking company with 3600 employees makes twice total what the postmaster general makes overseeing an operation that employs 630,000 people. If the USPS was a private company it would be 52nd on the fortune 500 list and would have the lowest CEO pay on the list aside from a few companies run by founder CEOs who pay themselves a ridiculously low salary and make all their money off their equity stake.

mam98031
OP2 weeks agoALL sellers @ogaugeminiaturefigures can use Calculated Shipping if they want to. There is NO REASON to call for Ebay to "get rid" of Flat Rate Shipping. It is a CHOICE for each seller to make, NOT Ebay. You have every right to do calculated shipping but no one has the right to FORCE me to use it unless I want to. I don't understand why you think this would be a good thing or the proper thing to do. Many of us have different needs as sellers from some other sellers. We are NOT all the same and we don't all have the SAME needs. It is not one size fits all even if you don't recognize that there are other sellers with different needs than you have.

christworks
·2 weeks ago · Edited@cityslickercreations2004 I agree and that's an eBay issue. In fact, a lot of what we've gone through the past six months is largely due to eBay not taking the lead a few years ago when rates started going up 3x/year. The biggest reselling platform in the United States, the world even, has failed their sellers and buyers when it comes to offering the best shipping rates out of all the reselling platforms.
Poshmark, Mercari (as much as I hate to admit it), and other sites have a far better structured shipping system. The Poshmark shipping rate isn't changing every other week. eBay should have already had a similar deal in place.
mam98031
OP2 weeks agoI find that interesting and hope that Ebay does take it as an example very soon. But even Amazon, while not announcing all these changes like Ebay does are still subject to them so sellers that ship their own stuff just find out by surprise.

OP2 weeks agoYes indeed, yet another one coming in a couple of weeks. It goes something like this:
U.S. Postal Service Announces Temporary Price Change for 2026 Holiday Shipping Season
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service filed notice today with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) regarding a temporary price change for some package products for the 2026 peak holiday season. This temporary price adjustment is to help cover extra handling costs to ensure a successful peak season.
The planned change for peak season, which was approved by the governors of the Postal Service, would affect prices on the following retail and commercial domestic competitive parcels: Priority Mail Express (PME), Priority Mail (PM), USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select. No other products or services would be affected. Pending favorable review by the PRC, the temporary rates would go into effect at 12 a.m. CT on Oct. 4 and remain in place until 12 a.m. CT on Jan. 17, 2027.
This seasonal adjustment will bring prices for the Postal Service’s retail and commercial customers in line with competitive practices.
As a part of the Postal Service’s transformation plan, these temporary changes will support the organization in achieving our public service mission — providing a nationwide, integrated network for the delivery of mail and packages at least six days a week — in a cost-effective and financially sustainable manner over the long term, just as the U.S. Congress has intended.
