Unfair eBay Decision to Seller
Bought and used the new shipping/tracking label from eBay and payed the USPS/eBay calculated price for it. The post office at destination asked for 40 cents more from the buyer.
When I was told by the irate customer I offered to refund the difference of the 40 cents.
Buyer responds with NO but wants "pay for my time to run home to get the money.
Also, pay for my car, the gas to the post office - my time waiting AND the 40 cents.
Then gives me nasty negative feedback. Cost me higher eBay fees, knocks my rating down.
All this from using the eBay tracking label. This label was inaccurately calculated
I write to eBay and they side with the buyer and will not remove feedback and what goes with it.
After being with eBay for more than 20 years I've had it and I have decided to wind down my shop and my purchases with eBay. They can be so unfair.

·2 years agoIf you used an eBay label, you should get charged by USPS directly if it's short paid. I've gotten notifications from Paypal (how I pay for my labels) and they tell me they've charged or refunded $1 because the weight is over or under what I thought when they check.
Your buyer sounds like someone I'm related to that sends messages like that to sellers asking to be reimbursed for her time spent on a silly little problem.

·2 years agoNot sure where anyone is getting the ESE usage from. Did I miss somewhere along the way where seller states ESE usage ?
That buyer could have just picked that item up next trip when they had 40 cents. USPS would hold the item for them. If I had been there, I would have given the 40 cents to the buyer.
They were likely more stressed about not being able to use the purchase on the trip home.

·2 years agoOP's own words: "Bought and used the new shipping/tracking label from eBay and payed the USPS/eBay calculated price for it."
The only "new shipping/tracking label" is ESE.

·2 years agoOnly forty cents? Fedex has hit some sellers up for over a thousand dollars. They have gone soft.
adkhighker
·2 years agoYes, maybe you made a mistake with shipping, but I think the feedback you left for your idiot buyer was spot on, no matter if all the morality police are telling you otherwise. Nobody deserves running into ignorant scamming buyers like you ran into over 40 cents.
yuzuha
·2 years agoHow is the buyer scamming? They were charged money to be able to pick up their package due to the SELLER'S error in shipping an item via a shipping method that it did not qualify for.
OP's items are non-machinable and thus CANNOT be shipped via ESE, as anything shipped that way needs to be machinable. This is 100% on the OP.
adkhighker
·2 years ago"How is the buyer scamming?"
I guess you missed the part where where the buyer insisted that the OP pay for their car, the gas to the PO, and for their time to go there and back....all over a 40 cent issue. Maybe it sounds like an honest buyer to you but to me it has scammer written all over it. Scammer, dishonest predator as well.
inhawaii
·2 years agoSo this buyer is a scammer and would have tried some other scam if his package did not have 40 cents due?
My opinion is that he is not a scammer, but a P'd off buyer.
adkhighker
·2 years agoI labeled the buyer as a scammer for trying to do ONLY what he tried to do to the OP. I never mentioned anything about the buyer trying some other scam if his package didn't have 40 cents due, but nice try at putting your words into my mouth.
inhawaii
·2 years agoFair enough.
Keep in mind, he wouldn't have said what he did if the package didn't have 40 cents postage due.
yuzuha
·2 years agoSounds perfectly fair to me, honestly. The SELLER inconvenienced the buyer, who was expecting to simply receive the item they ordered (and paid the shipping for) with no ado.
adkhighker
·2 years agoYou honestly think it's "perfectly fair" for a buyer to demand what he did of the OP? I can understand any buyer being inconvenienced over having to go to the PO to pick up his package because of a 40 cent issue, one that was not even done on purpose by the seller. But for anyone to think it's perfectly fair for the buyer to insist that the OP also pays in his words "for my car, the gas to the post office - my time waiting" is puzzling at the very least.
1786davycrockett
·2 years ago@adkhighker
". . .one that was not even done on purpose by the seller."
Except that it WAS done on purpose by the seller -- by deliberately shipping a roach clip using the eBay Standard Envelope (ESE) -- the seller purposefully shipped an item that is NOT qualified under the rules for the ESE, to avoid shipping at the correct (and higher) USPS Ground Advantage rates.
adkhighker
·2 years agoSo you're saying the OP didn't make an honest mistake on the shipping end of it, but that he tried to chisel the buyer out of 40 cents?
kensgiftshop
·2 years agoDo you think it's fair that the buyer had to pay to pick up an item that had free shipping?
If the seller wasn't trying to be cheap, they would have paid the correct postage and there wouldn't have been a problem.
Yes, it was done on purpose.
The seller needs to use the correct shipping service.
adkhighker
·2 years agoDo you think it's fair that the buyer had to pay to pick up an item that had free shipping?
Comparing what's fair, when it comes to what the OP did to the buyer as compared to the demands that the buyer made to the OP is like comparing apples to oranges.
tobaccocardyahoo
·2 years agoThe buyer is not just annoyed about the 40 cents.
Everything you have listed is likely to have understated the cost of shipping, could have postage due and inconvenience a buyer.
You have made it clear that you are not aware of the restrictions on the packaging for the postage you are using.
You have probably inconvenienced other buyers or cheated the post office.
How should the buyer have reacted to what he would assume to be a pattern of inconveniencing buyers?
His request to be paid for his time and gas was probably an attempt to make clear that you have been an inconsiderate seller. His FB is valid.
ebeths_eclectic_collectibles
·2 years agoMuch ado about so little. 40 cents! But given your responses to feedback and your apparent bending of policy by shopping standard envelope you got a negative. So be it
gloryglorygifts
·2 years agoEbay will not allow you to give anything less than $1 in a refund amount. Unfortunately, you used the wrong packaging to mail the item out, so ebay isn't going to remove the neg. Looking at your fb it seems that you should use another form of packaging to ship your roach clips, and ship on time. That would alleviate some of your issues.
Good luck to you.
zobal99
OP2 years agoThanks but you just don't get it. I am not objecting to the mail at all-the 40 cents or anything like that. It's not the money or the mail.
This person was not happy getting a reimbursement-this buyer wanted me to reimburse him for his time to go home to get his 40 cents and the time at the PO and the gas for his car AND the 40cents. He said he had to RUN HOME TO GET THE MONEY. 40 cents. I don't respond to crazies. ( I might be making a buck and a half on this sale but that's not the point). Because I don't respond to crazies, he put a nasty and hateful neg feedback on eBay even though I was nice to this person and offered reimbursement. When I brought this to the attention of eBay they did not stand up for me. As a result, and this is what bothered me the most, eBay allowed his nasty and hateful neg. feedback and sided with the buyer even though he acted inappropriately to a seller.
nobody*s_perfect
·2 years agoWell yes the buyer totally overreacted, but the exaggerated inconvenience was your fault, which is probably why eBay won't remove the neg. The buyer is also saying "I'm not objecting to the 40 cents..." Lesson: Don't mail non-flat objects in eBay's "Standard envelope" or as letters.

·2 years ago@zobal99
Just to be clear: What exactly were you attempting to ship?
If you were attempting to use the eBay Standard Envelope (ESE), it is intended ONLY to ship trading cards, stamps, postcards, paper currency, coins, patches, stickers, greeting cards and seed packets.
Several individuals on this thread have suggested that you were attempting to ship a roach clip, which is obviously not included amongst the items listed.
Additionally, a roach clip would not be USPS envelope machinable, since the ESEs are required to be VERY flexible, bending nearly in half, to speed through the automatic sorting system, which reportedly handles 32,000 envelopes per hour.
Thus a non-machinable envelope would be charged an extra 40 cents.
So what did you attempt to ship?
fern*wood
·2 years agoAccording to their feedback, it was a roach clip.
tobaccocardyahoo
·2 years agoI'll join the voters for the non-machineable surcharge.
Roach clips will definitely make an envelope non-machineable,
buyselljack2016
·2 years agoYup, sounds like non-machinable surcharge. Apparently the buyer really needed that item, as if they did partake in the use of such before getting to the PO they would have been a bit more mellow about 40 cents.
zobal99
OP2 years agoYes you said it right -the buyer could have been more mellow about it. It wasn't the 40 cents. It was the buyers attitude. It was full of hate.

·2 years agoI don't know what's worse... the 40 cent thing or the OP's childish and defensive replies to the negative and neutral feedbacks received...

·2 years agoAre you talking about the Ebay Standard Envelope?
I didn't think you could ship roach clips using it?
stainlessenginecovers
·2 years ago3 negs in a month with 'responses' as if though you were talking to that person when in reality you are showing ALL future buyers you are NOT someone to deal with, is NOT great.
Your responses needed to be 'Sorry you are unhappy, I was happy to help you as I offered in the best manor possible'
Vague, promising, FUTURE buyers have really NO idea how you are or what happened.
But, you look like someone most can deal with (should you have responded like that)
zobal99
OP2 years agoYes if someone is trying to get stupid on me and become abusive. Yes I will act that way.
He had too run home to get 40 cents?
The point is eBay does not protect sellers from these kind of buyers. It's not the 40cents
yuzuha
·2 years agoNot everyone carries cash/change on them unless they're expecting to use it. Picking up your mail at the PO is not an "expecting to have to use cash/change" situation.
gwenscupboard
·2 years agoGoing to play the devil's advocate here.
The indignant person didn't have to "run home to get 40 cents".
He could have simply refused the package then and there. No worry about running home, no worry about not having cash on hand or waiting at the post office. !!!
714ricki
·2 years agoBy the looks of the scenario, you under reported the weight or dimensions of the parcel. Its the seller/shipper responsibility to have accurate weight & dimensions or else the recipient might get billed for insufficinet postage or if you're lucky the USPS auto bills you for the insufficient postage. Sorry, this wasn't an ebay issue. Please be careful next time.
zobal99
OP2 years agoIt was weighed correctly. Less than an ounce and less than a quarter inch thick. It's the PO.
tsme35
·2 years agoNot sure why PO requested .40, if you use ebay's labels and your off on the postage, USPS take's it back from your fee's.
nobody*s_perfect
·2 years agoPostage errors are charged to the sender's account IF the problem is identified by the APV system at the sorting center.
Did you use eBay's "Standard envelope"? In this case, apparently the buyer's local Post Office decided that this item required payment of the 40-cent "nonmachinable surcharge," probably because it was too rigid or not flat enough.
toomuchstuffagain35
·2 years agoYeah, the nasty comments from others were uncalled for, from both posters AND the buyer.
A .40 overage, and buyer was charged? Pretty sure that sounds like a postal worker not understanding the ebay Standard Envelope, OR possibly, the OP used a rigid top loader or something to cause it to be non machinable.
If I was @zobal99 I'd be refunding the buyer the .40 and not a penny more. Not sure though if ebay allows you to refund less than a dollar, so there's that as well. (Even though they're happy to remit a less than dollar payout for some reason).
zobal99
OP2 years agoI would have given him a buck without hesitation but not after his unreasonable request and then his hateful response on the feedback board just because I refused to accommodate his stupid request. There is just so much s---t a seller should be expected to take. It aint worth the few pennies made.
He wanted a refund for his time, gas and the 40cents too. Guy is a clown.
sin-n-dex
·2 years agoYou can refund less than a dollar. I've refunded 75 cents when combining shipping on a couple of postcards (where there isn't much shipping in the first place, but I refund a little bit).

·2 years agoI feel bad for you all this over 40 cents, I have paid postage due a couple of times and didn't make a fuss. One seller reimbursed me the other I let go, I have bigger and more important things to do with my time,
Happy Holidays!
zobal99
OP2 years agoI offered a refund but he wanted to get paid for running home to get 40cents, (he didn't have 40 cents on him) His gas, his time doing this and his time going and waiting at the post office and going home and the 40cents too. Buyer is mental.
fern*wood
·2 years agoThe postage is calculated based on what is entered when printing the label. Mistakes are charged postage due.

·2 years agoIt is your responsibility to check that the label is correct before you purchase it. They give you a chance to review before paying. Sounds like you did not have the weight of the item right.
robbie31415
·2 years agoIf postage is due it's because YOU measured/weighed it incorrectly.
Your feedback responses are unprofessional.
Your negative feedback should stick because you made errors.
Should learn from it and correct your mistakes.
fab_finds4u
·2 years agoThey want to be reimbursed for their subsequent costs? No. Refund them the postage due. eBay says they or the seller is not responsible for subsequent damages caused by the item or the transaction going awry.
robbie31415
·2 years agoI never said they should.
They need to be refunded for additional costs.
I personally would add like a 5% Discount for the order for an inconvience.
If I was the buyer I'd not have picked it up and filed INR.
Small transactions aren't worth the wait in the post office.
