Trump tax 25% on Canada - Who is collecting?
I am considering to put the store on vacation for the next few days, I doubt there will be many cross border orders anyhow, to avoid the chaos. I don't want buyers to refuse packages and me have to pay return shipping cross border. Any news from ebay how it will be collected?
- By Ebay at checkout?
- By the shipping company, which will add a broker fee on top of it?

·1 year agoI live in the US. Does not bother me in the least to see Canadians booing the American national anthem, boycotting American products, and canceling US travel plans. Those are rational reactions to Trump's belligerence against a good neighbor and a loyal ally.
The tariff issue will resolve, but the damage is already done.

Canada is putting tariffs on only Republican states that sell items such as orange juice from Florida and such.

·1 year agoDrugs and immigration aside, Trump also said the tariffs were necessary because America was treated very unfairly and being ripped off by other countries.
The tariffs, he said, would make America so rich that prices on everything would come down quickly and we might even no longer need to have an income tax.
But now we won't need tariffs at all if Canada and Mexico play ball? Are we no longer being ripped off? And where will all the new riches come from now if we don't have the magic tariffs?
chevymontecarlo88
·1 year agoBoth can be true but the reason the tariffs have been placed was because of drug/human trafficking. Now that it looks like one country is falling in line, maybe the other will think wisely before punishing their own constituents. Tariffs are not just being applied to Canada and Mexico and other countries have been put on notice. Looks like Panama is changing their tune and admitting that given China control of the canal will not end well for their country.
On a side note, i do agree with some of your complaints about the pharmaceutical companies, Insurance companies and those who are responsible for distributing poison. If some would give the administration more than two weeks, maybe some of those issues can be dealt with as well.

We are already pulling US alcohol of off our shelves. Canada will never 'fall in line' for a criminal president. Tariffs update: The US and Mexico have put tariffs on a 30 day pause as they continue to negotiate. Mexico is mobilizing 10,000 of their National Guard Troops to help cut down on drug cartels and their flow of fentanyl to the US.
President Trump has a 3 PM call scheduled today with the Prime Minister of Canada.

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement governs trade relations between the three countries.
The USMCA replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement in 2020.
Who was president when that happened? None other than the guy who now says America is being ripped off by the deal his own administration negotiated.

The USMCA is the largest, most significant, modern, and balanced trade agreement in history. All of our countries will benefit greatly.

·1 year agoI’m starting to believe you’re trolling this thread the same way you were trolling everyone when you said you threatened your PO bodily harm unless they gave you free shipping. There is no way someone can misunderstand the concept of trade deficit and blame it on one country’s head of state taking advantage of another.
A trade deficit merely means one country buys more from a country than that country buys from them. It’s not good or bad it’s just an observation.

·1 year agoFor those that can't find any information about what is happening I have taken this snippet from the CBS news article titled " Trump to enact tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China starting Feb.1, White House says" authored by Aimee Picchi and edited by Alaine Sherter published on Jan 31st 2025.
As we all know this is a fact check verified news source so we are going to have to respect it unless the news is fake.
snippet: " Mr. Trump's goals include narrowing the trade surplus between those nations and the U.S. The U.S. trade deficit with Canada has surged from $31 billion in 2019 to $72 billion in 2023, largely reflecting growing American imports of Canadian energy. Over that same period, the gap with Mexico has grown from $106 billion to $161 billion"
ok that is all thank you for your time.
goldrushfinds
·1 year agoYes, the trade deficit with Canada is mostly due to greater imports of gas/oil. That is not a catastrophic failure of Biden like you seem to imply. And as far as Mexico goes (from the same article you quoted)... "Over that same period, the gap with Mexico has grown from $106 billion in 2019 to $161 billion as the U.S. curtails imports from China and brings more electronic items, shoes and other products from south of the border."
You are a purveyor of misinformation. I've grown weary of people twisting data and facts to fit their agenda. The right has tried to paint Biden as a complete failure, when in actuality the U.S. has faired better than almost every country in recovering from the Covid crisis. Per Yahoo Finance in Sept. 2024........
"Since July, the Biden economy has improved two notches on the Yahoo Finance Bidenomics Report Card, from a B+ to a solid A. That’s the same mark our report card gave the economy during Biden’s first month in office, in January 2021."
youn2240
·1 year agoso you are saying that losing 100 billion dollars in trade to both mexico and canad was good. lol I think the way the left views things is why they are losing elections to Donald Trump again because it makes no sense at all to say adding a 100 billion dollar deficit between just mexico and canada is positive. it's absolutely not positive and you have no way to twist that into a W for democrats and the other leftist morons. it's a 100 billion dollar loss silly. lol
youn2240
·1 year agoThe reason for the tariffs with canada and basically any of the countries we will be tariffing is our country was ran so poorly under the last administration that democrats allowed the trade deficit with canada to more than double over sleepy Joes term. They literally were not doing anything and allowing our country to be gutted by other nations because the run of the mill politicians we have are actually doing it to gain personal wealth so they allow these horrible policies to flourish because they are totally fine with making their own citizens go broke. but then we caught on and voted for Trump again because he's not going to sit there and have no clue what is happening or too scared to tell a foreign country to reign the deficits in. So tariff for you tariff for you. anyone who wants a tariff can get one now. we got em for all of ya.
goldrushfinds
·1 year agoIt is not as black and white as you state. The truth is, as this excerpt from from a Times article notes: "The trade gap in goods with Canada has ballooned, too: From $31 billion in 2019 to $72 billion in 2023. The deficit largely reflects America’s imports of Canadian energy."
And no Drill Baby Drill will not ease the defecit, as our refineries cannot process oil pumped in this country.
gurlcat
·1 year agoI don't know why MAGAts cannot absorb this fact, or if the absorb it they just pretend not to, and keep parroting that idiotic phrase.
We cannot USE the oil we pump; all we can do is sell it! And by "we" I don't even mean "America" because it is COR-POR-A-TIONS who pump and sell it, to countries who CAN refine it, and then sell that to other American corporations! We could Drill DADDY Drill and it wouldn't do a thing for the average citizen! Even our "reserves" aren't there for using ourselves; it's just a strategic amount to hold as leverage if needed.
chevymontecarlo88
·1 year agoWe will be ok with energy. Maybe a blip at first but energy is not going to be an issue long term. Refineries are the weakest link, and we will see if there is any plan to rectify it. Time will tell. It would be nice if Americans did get a sort of profit sharing cut from oil pulled from American territories. Things are going to change, and Doug Bergum will be one of the people to watch. I thought i read months ago that nuclear, natural gas and clean coal would also be part of bringing energy independence back to the US.
Our oil reserves were used during the last administration and need to be refilled. I agree they need be left for leverage and/or emergencies.
gurlcat
·1 year agoLet me ask you something, because Trump told us in February 2020 that Covid would be over by April, that it would just "disappear like a miracle," and his "fans" never seemed to mind one bit that it was absolute bull. But they sure continued to rant about the price of "Biden's" gas long after it had lowered back down, close to pre-pandemic prices. Everywhere I looked I saw that complaint continue to be milked, for at least another year. The sense of time is very strange with these folks, though I'm not sure if you're among them or not.
So let's say gas rises to the same price as its' highest during Biden's term. -Just for the record, under Trump, how much time would pass before you'd consider it going from 'blip' to 'long term'? A matter of weeks? Months? Years?
chevymontecarlo88
·1 year agoI would hope it would last less than a few months but think it will be less than weeks. Who knows and if it does last longer, that can be argued against the administration and is legitimate criticism. If we continue to rely on other countries for energy, we always will be vulnerable and will rely on others. But maybe give the administration a little time to fix what was broken (direction). It has only been two weeks as of today.
Let me ask you a question.
If the tariffs help eliminate human trafficking and stop the opiates from flowing, would you be ok with higher gas prices short-term?
mam98031

Your comment is total nonsense. As if Biden acted independently. He had an entire staff of highly qualified personnel in his cabinet. Also per CNN .........
The US trade deficit with Canada
During the question-and-answer portion of the Thursday event, Trump falsely claimed that the US has a trade deficit with Canada of $200 billion or $250 billion, saying “it’s not fair†that the bilateral deficit should be this high. In fact, the US goods and services trade deficit with Canada was about $40.6 billion in 2023, according to the US government’s Bureau of Economic Analysis.
Even if you only consider trade in goods and ignore the services trade at which the US excels, the US deficit with Canada was about $72.3 billion in 2023, the bureau reported, still far shy of Trump’s figure. And it’s worth noting that the deficit is overwhelmingly caused by the US importing a large quantity of inexpensive Canadian oil, which helps keep Americans’ gas prices down.
youn2240
·1 year agoWait so if Biden wasn't taken advantage of and he was surrounded by highly qualified personnel in his cabinet then how did they lose 41 billion dollars in trade with Canada? we lost millions of lives during covid and have more electric cars on the road percentagewise so how have we lost 41 billion dollars because of fuel in 4 years? I'm thinking either Canada and other countries took advantage of Joe Bidens condition or Joe BIdens highly qualified cabinet was actually not highly qualified. potentially both things lined up at the exact same time. we will have to follow along and watch closely to see if Trumps tariffs can bring this trade deficit back to more reasonable levels like before Biden was the president.

Joe Biden was like a nice old grandpa and you took advantage absolutely morally and ethically wrong to do. you get Trump and I give you a tariff.
