Thwarted Scam Attempt (empty package scam)
So I shipped a banknote. It's inside a #10 envelope with three pieces of packing tape (holding the label down which is printed on printer paper, and covering edges to make it not so likely to open). The note is inside a sleeve (an uncommon thing buying notes from various sellers on eBay), and the sleeve has two pieces of magic tape holding it to the invoice where it's folded up with the note inside. Well packed I'd say.
I get a message from someone with a grand total of 7 FB (the third FB being from me as a buyer), that they got an empty envelope that someone opened. The message wasn't very clear, and I'm not going to run out and refund without at least asking some questions.
So I asked, how was it opened, was the invoice inside (if it's not, how did they know it's from me, eBay doesn't give customers my real name). Told the buyer I'm fine with refunding it if they didn't get it, but need them to answer some questions first. The request came through eBay message, not as a request/dispute, otherwise I probably wouldn't have had this kind of leeway to delay refunding the buyer.
No messages from the buyer last night. But today they left feedback that says "I found it". (It's an uncirculated banknote, if it fell out of the package outside somewhere, it would probably be ruined).
Anyway no refund for this buyer, and a trip to the BBL.
