"Threw item away and wants a refund" scam
I've had wonderful buyers and feedback for years now....until this guy comes along. From the very start, before he even won the item he barraged me with questions and requests. Then, when he won and I shipped the item, and it showed it was delivered he kept claiming he never received it and demanded a refund, which Ebay did not do as it showed it was delivered. Then he requested a refund which said item was defective! Even though it had still not been delivered, according to him. I reported him to Ebay, although I don't know what good it did. Then he messages me telling me he finally received the item but it was complete trash, and he threw it in the garbage! And still wants his refund. I could not say no, since Ebay only gave me the option of HOW to refund the guy, so I said I'll refund when I receive the item back. Now he's barraging me again with emails saying he doesn't have the item, he doesn't want to even ship it it was such trash. I told him since I'd be paying for all the shipping I don't know why he would be opposed to throwing it in the box and sending it back to me. I'm standing firm on this. He already gave me negative feedback, so I don't really care anymore, what more can he do to me? This sounds like some kind of SCAM. I googled "throwing item in trash and demanding an ebay refund" and found other people complaining of the same thing! So... beware. I don't know what can be done about these people. The refund window is closing in a few days so I hope it'll finally be the last I hear from him, because I have him blocked now. I'm just kind of sad because it was a vintage item I had even listed AS-IS because I don't know if it worked but it looked cool AND it had the original instruction booklet. So, I don't mind at all if he ships it back and I'm out shipping money. He doesn't deserve to have the item and the money back.

How to handle Scum
The first thing to do is to accept the return, otherwise eBay will let the buyer keep the item, plus refund them at your expense, plus you’ll get a defect on your account.
If you receive the item back in a different condition than as sent and/or the buyer lied about the reason for the return, report the buyer>
https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/resolving-buyer-issues/report-issue-buyer?id=4084&st=12&pos=1&query=Report%20an%20issue%20with%20a%20buyer&intent=report%20a%20buyer&docId=HELP1263
Then block them.
Then, read this link re Seller Protection>
https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-policies/seller-protection?id=4345&st=12&pos=2&query=Seller%20protection&intent=seller%20protection&context=9056_SELLER
Then, see if this will help:
An item that is returned after it was used or damaged by the buyer
Sellers who offer free returns and who are not Below Standard are eligible for this protection
How to issue a partial refund when the item is returned in a different condition
To issue a partial refund:
In addition, make a police report, internet fraud report, USPS fraud report to send with your appeal.
Also note the weight and size of original package vs returned package, ie photos, label info
Reports for USPS here>
United States Postal Inspection Service
Mail Fraud Complaint>
https://ehome.uspis.gov/fcsexternal/default.aspx
Then
Contact eBay via social media with a private message:

AND-OR

very good customer service on these social media sites

·4 years agoYou don't have to have free returns to make use of deductions. You need only be top rated and have at least 30 day returns. This has been the case for some time now, but eBay did not communicate it very well.
