This is what eBay thinks of you...
I have had a premium store for years. I have watched as eBay used many strategies and fee increases to take more and more of our profit without really providing a better product. I rode them all out until I recently decided to go back to being a casual seller. My premium store auto renewal was Aug 1. There is a $15/month discount for renewing for a full year. However, if you decide to cancel your subscription before the year is out, you pay a penalty. Since the auto renewal was Aug 1, and it's now Nov 6, I figured somewhere around $60 - the $15 a month discount x 4. My penalty is $160. This pretty much sums up how we're thought of by eBay.

·2 years agoYeah, I cannot do it in my head but when I plan on listing something especially with promoted listing I have a calculator each time I list.

·2 years agoRegarding your premium store subscription and the associated penalty for canceling before the year is out, it's not uncommon for such platforms to have policies in place to incentivize long-term commitments. These policies are meant to encourage sellers to maintain their subscriptions and provide eBay with a stable source of revenue.

·2 years agoYou miscalculated how ebay charges the early termination fee. You pay the fee on the months left in your yearly term... not the months you used.

·2 years agoThat hasn't changed for years and eBay warns you on sign-up that this will happen on early termination.

·2 years agoYes.
They think that if you freely choose to enter into an agreement, you will expected to honor it.
And the penalty will be exactly what you agreed upfront that the penalty would be.

·2 years agoMany of us are sadly aware of what "eBay thinks of us".
We get daily reminders with their "Use Promoted Listings To Increase Sales" crap.
How about you "Promote" eBay with a couple of Holiday ads??

·2 years agoPeople really need to get out of the what does Ebay think of me. As long as I can work with this system which I have done for well over 16 years and turn a decent profit. I really cannot complain too much at all. EVERYTHING under the sun is getting more expensive. I use promoted listings at a low level and the sales have been doing pretty well and with all this economy stuff going on, wars, etc. I have to thank my lucky stars. As far as ads go, I understand that to increase their ad spend at this time beyond the car parts and authenticated products would be a waste of resources. Too much of the same stuff everywhere else.

And I'd respectfully argue that in a marketplace crowded with "too much of the same stuff" like fast food and new cars??
The ONLY way they stand out and get consumers attention IS ADVERTISING!!
Just saying...

·2 years agoSeems OK to me...$21.95 a month I can handle. A lot of us sellers find this a good resource to make some extra cash.
A curious thought, If you get cancel by eBay for doing something against eBay rules and regulations and eBay cancels your account...I assume since the seller didn't cancel the account but eBay did I assume there would be no cancellation fee.

·2 years ago$22 a month is not the premiere level store fee.

·2 years agoONLY if you chose a full year subscription. If you opted for month-to-month, you pay no penalties and can cancel at any time. You have to weigh the benefits and decide which option is best for you, but if you willingly choose the full-year subscription (which, might I add, makes very clear up front that you will be charged an early termination fee if you choose to end your subscription before the year is up), then you can't be surprised when you get charged the exact fee you agreed to.

·2 years agoSeems perfectly reasonable to me. You signed up for a year to save $190 and bailed after 4 months. Why do you think you should get the 12 month rate for the 4 months.
vintagecraze50
·2 years agoYes, A very reasonable outcome. Read the fine print before you commit. It is like that anywhere.
yuzuha
·2 years agoExactly. My cell phone company does exactly the same thing-- sign up for a two-year service contract and get extremely cheap monthly payments, but if you decide to end the contract before the two years are up, you pay a fortune in fees. They don't want you to sign up for the two-year contract unless you're actually going to honor it for the full two years.

·2 years agoTo my understanding there is no penalty for canceling an annual store subscription. You simply pay, pro-rated, what you would have paid without the annual subscription. As for what Ebay thinks of small resellers not involved with luxury goods like you and myself, well you and I are probably in agreement.
farmalljr
·2 years agoThere IS a penalty for cancelling an annual store subscription. You pay for all the moths left before your renewal date. The month to month, there is no penalty, but it costs more a month for the same size store.
On an annual plan, if you have 10 months left at 59.99 a month, you owe eBay $599.90 to cancel it.

·2 years agoNot True. Yes penalty, but your calculation is wrong. There is a table/chart of fees/penalties for early termination. The table/chart was posted earlier in the thread.

·2 years agoI do wish eBay would make the storefront software more robust in features but overall I'm quite happy with eBay. Considering all the challenges the company has faced since its inception and all of its competitors of the day all went under that clearly displays the resilience and intelligence of the company.
As far as fee's and such go it doesn't get any cheaper... I was paying more 20 years ago at Onsale, iDeal, uBid and others than eBay is charging now.

·2 years agoGuess it took you a while to figure out you could sell a $100 item on ebay 20 years ago for about 6% of the items selling price ALONE, not the entire transaction - Hate to think of how much money you wasted if you were paying 15% to 25% of the items selling price on those other sites huh?
Oh yeah, I forgot...Silly me...You actually had to pay a 10 cent to 25 cent listing fee(can you believe that?? Oh the horror) IF you weren't getting the 1,000 to 10,000 free listing emails 3 times a month like I was - Even if you didn't get the free listing emails, it was fine anyway because back then the sell through rates were about 80% to 100%, so it was money well spent and you didn't have the transaction fee of 30 cents...which is more...
yuzuha
·2 years agoAND fees for every picture past the first one. I can't believe how everyone seems to just forget that part.

·2 years agoOh yeah...And for those who didnt realize one photo,(OR EVEN NONE) was enough back then, that had to have been the pits!...Especially when considering most auctions sold for TOP DOLLAR - Yeahhhh you're right.... that truly sucked...

·2 years ago@elizro_8 Wow...You have a premium store and you have 65 feedback for the year? - I'm sure you likely sold 3 times that, but I would have to image your premium store subscription just about ate up any profit you made - Add in the 15% to 25% of the items selling price in FVF fees and you are in the hole, right?
I cringe to think of how many people there are out there doing this exact same thing...keeping ebay afloat while they are going under... unbelievable...

Lot of factors in play but tend to agree the environment is getting tougher and tougher for the seller on eBay these days. I have mixed emotions about the promoted listings campaign.
On one hand it was a brilliant move by eBay as a way to increase revenues without having to do an across the board FVF increase and looking like the bad guy. PL is voluntary and strictly self inflicted by the seller and there is NO way to prove PL actually increases sales. But now that they have the sellers in the prisoners dilemma they are starting to increase the recommended PL % and some sellers are buying off on it. If nobody promoted the playing field would be level but eBay probably could not handle the revenue loss.
I have never, and will never, use PL but I am grateful for those that do since it probably saves me from the impact of an across the board FVF increase.
