This is getting outta hand.
Summary: La discusión, titulada 'This is getting outta hand', consiste en una serie de interacciones sobre la frustración relacionada con instrucciones de embalaje para objetos frágiles.
When buyers buy something Sunday, the next day is a federal holiday, then message like this on Tuesday at 7am.
I had 6 messages on Tuesday morning like this, even after I started putting 3 days to ship in the description.

·4 months agoI just had a buyer purchase 2 things about 1 hour apart.
Then want to cancel 1 of the items because "won't be here in time"
So, I cancelled/refunded both.
An hour later the buyer repurchased the item that I cancelled on my own.
Next day (yesterday) they repurchased the item that they cancelled.
So 2 cancels, 2 repurchase; only now 1 day later delivery.
This planet is FULL of brainy people.

·4 months ago@gurlcat I usually do but this particular customer has purchased 7 or 8 other things the past couple months, so I just 'went with it'. I know they are probably doing a 'car show' and wanted the item before the next show but because we build to order, items show a 'delivery date' 3-8 days out.

·4 months agoThey want it yesterday. Delivery by drone is needed.

·4 months agoIf I was selling auto parts, I would not be surprised by these messages.
Why do people buy auto parts on Ebay?
The reasons I can think of are price, or no local source for the part.
If the car is down, they want delivery at the speed of light, and bust your chops to make you provide it.
I choose not to be in a business like that, but not everyone can find an alternative which makes as much money.

·4 months agoUGH! I hate it. I have actually had people cancel for "shipping taking too long". I have actually starting circumventing it by letting people know about a holiday weekend.

OP4 months agoSame. It really ticks me off because they never EVER message you before/after purchase that they need this shipped quickly or are offering to pay for expedited shipping.
I had a high school teacher who liked to use the phrase "don't make your emergency my emergency" and I think about that often.

I haven't had any customers who are confused about this lately - I guess I need to list more items!

·4 months agoI get these every now and then.
I know it's annoying for us to get told how to do our job, but I can only assume that for every seller who knows how to properly pack a glass, there are ten who don't.
movieman630
·4 months agoThat's my biggest pet peeve with how people conduct themselves on ebay. They treat every seller as if they're just a person selling as a hobby. They don't realize that some of us have actual business' and know how to pack and ship items. I often wonder if walmart on ebay gets these demanding emails about how to pack something.
gurlcat
·4 months ago@movieman630 True, but then there are also buyers who treat sellers as if we're Walmart (as in, a multi-billioin-dollar corporation with insurance to cover 'shrinkage' -e.g. theft). Considering the difference in potential outcomes, I would much prefer a buyer who thinks I'm just a hobbyist who's never packed before.
The great thing about buyers with low expectations is how much opportunity you have to 'WOW' them.
Wait, did you say Walmart has listings ON EBAY?
movieman630
·4 months agoAbsolutely Walmart sells on ebay. A lot of big box stores have ebay accounts.

OP4 months agoI have not bought much from Amazon lately but they would often literally put an item in an empty box and ship it like that. Their computer tells them the box size to use and it would often be hilariously incorrect.Like a pack of cards in a box an inkket printer would come in. Often with either no void fill (packing paper) or a small scrap of it, like 8 square inches.
Once ordered a new cast iron skillet, they shipped it without any void fill and it arrived with the handle poking out of the box, luckily not broken off.
So I can tell you that even some large corporations pack things terribly, which I assume if they have ordered from Amazon, understandably want a collectable or fragile item packed a little nicer than that.
tobaccocardyahoo
·4 months agoNo matter what Amazon sellers may choose to think, Amazon assumes everything it ships is in manufacturer's packaging and extremely tolerant of the way they choose to pack their orders.
If an item is collectible, or fragile and supplied by a 3P seller they had best be sure that the item that is put on the shelf in FBA in a form which is safe to ship using Amazon's methods.
Amazon has done a pretty good job of running off sellers of collectible and used fragile items, with those who remain filling their own orders.
house*of*paws
·4 months agoThe likely reason that Amazon can afford to pack more poorly than other companies is that they deliver much of their own stuff. Amazon drivers won’t last long if buyers report breakage.
I can recall getting only one damaged item shipped by Amazon in about 20 years.
movieman630
·4 months agoMy main point wasn't that big companies all know how to pack, it was that the buyer giving specific instructions on how to pack is even going to be read or abided by.
Honestly though I have more people who don't even know how to properly fill in their address' or just leave some old address than give instructions on how to pack. It's actually kind of an epidemic how many times I get an email after someone buys that asks me to change the address or tells me they have the wrong address. And I can't change it so I have to cancel it.

Argh, I just had one of those recently! I have my stores on 35% off right now and a man bought a beat up old antique Chinese dish for $7.
I then got a huge paragraph after the sale on double boxing his valuable antique with extra bubble wrap and fragile stickers, etc. I charge buyers the discounted shipping, they pay what I pay. I wrapped and shipped it my way (extremely well), waiting to see how he reacts.
It always seems to be the cheapest sales that get the most demands from buyers.

·4 months agoIt is almost funny. I had a buyer recently complain in positive feedback that a shipment took too long. Bought and paid for Thursday evening, shipped out Friday afternoon from Ohio, delivered to buyer on Monday in Florida. Good lord, people are impatient.

LOL.......Fire ants are one of the few things I don't miss from my time in East Texas................
tsme35
·4 months agoOuch, but ebay sends payments out on Monday even if a holiday, if I don't pack Sunday night, may not be money for Monday to buy labels
gurlcat
·4 months ago@tsme35 Well the member I was talking about is a buyer-only who basically hates sellers and refuses to accept any form of reality from the seller experience. This thing about sellers printing labels early is just one example. And of course the only thing that ACTUALLY matters is whether a seller gets an 'Accepted' scan within their handling time commitment, but that's not how he sees it. -Partly because he also thinks no seller should be allowed a handling time any longer than 1-day. Yes he has actually said that.
jonathanbrightlight
·4 months ago@gurlcat I remember the thread about that. Wild discussion, what discussion there was at least.
tsme35
·4 months agoYep that 1%, I used to do 1 day handling until the PO decided to scan only 5 packages per pick up, my mail lady scans everything, but the subs don't. St. Louis hub is the worse, they only scan 80% of packages, so I have buyers wanting to know if I have shipped or not. My fishing rods bypass St louis and go straight to Chicago IL, so there's a 2-3 delay. I ship out within a day but I'm rural so I still have power outages, flooded roads and snow
gurlcat
·4 months ago@tsme35 I think post offices/carriers make up the rules as they go along. My long-time route carrier Eric (who is mostly awesome) told me carriers cannot scan ANY packages when they pick them up, which I knew for a fact wasn't true, but of course the last thing you want is a route carrier who resents you. What he said he could do is scan a scan form, which if you don't know, is a single-sheet "manifest" of all the tracking numbers being picked up, in 1 barcode.
So I have used a scan sheet ever since then, even if I have only 1 item being picked up. And eBay DOES treat that scan the same as an 'Accepted' one, as far as minding your handling time goes. You might want to ask your carrier if she would do that even if you have more than 5 items going out. She might be happy to, since it would mean not having to aim her scanner at all those barcodes one-by-one.
I just realized you may already know all this and don't want to do it for some reason, but if you're interested but don't know hot to get a scan form, just say so and I'll tell you (it's easy).
tsme35
·4 months agoMy mail lady is great, she knows this is my income (and her job). I did look into scan sheet, wasn't going to do 2 scans a day, I pack orders at night, scan sheet, if I sold and pack next morning its another scan sheet. Not to mention ink is expensive
soh.maryl
·4 months agoYes, it seems like that fire ant thingy has become protocol. Surprising you were unaware.

·4 months agoPrint the shipping labels on Sunday or Monday - you can still drop them in the mail on Tuesday.
There are always impatient buyers who don't realize that Federal Holidays exist.
a_c_green
·4 months agoThe OP hasn't actually said that he didn't; some people are just oblivious about holidays.
I generally pack and purchase the label as soon as possible, partly as a CYA in case a computer or printer decides to take a dump at an inopportune time, but in the case of 3-day weekends I also send a short note saying that the package is ready to ship as soon as the PO opens following Monday's holiday. (My record-selling mentee had a big sale to Latvia last weekend via eBay International Shipping, in fact, so I thought it would be a good idea if we sent that buyer a little extra detail about how it would not be showing Acceptance until Tuesday due to the national Memorial Day on Monday.)
