"The more active listings you have the more views you get"...can someone please explain this?
I hear all the time that the more active listings you have the more views you get. Is this simply implying that the more items you have the more likely you are to get more views simply because you have more items? Or is there something else going on where the algorithm from Ebay recognizes that you have more items for sale and actually puts you a little higher on the search listings results which results in more views?

·8 months agoYou get more views, but not per item.
If you have one item that gets 3 views in a month, and you list another 99 items you will get a lot more views but that one item would still likely get 3 views a month except... There is the occasional buyer browsing through that will look at your other items so you may get an extra view or two because of that, but don't hold your breath because more items also dilutes the pool - The number of buyers doesn't increase because you have more items listed, keep that in mind.
What I'm getting at, flooding ebay with listings isn't that effective because buyers get tired of rummaging through tons of meh... Now if you can list unique items that would normally generate some sort of demand, pay attention to your views and stop listing stuff that doesn't sell, keep listing things that do, you know... If you do that then I think you could do relatively well.

·8 months agoIMO there is no direct connection between number of listings and views. But I believe there is a direct and an indirect relationship between number of listings and impressions.
Ebay displays total impressions and views each day. If you have more listings you will probably see more impression, in total. Whether that translates to views depends on where in the search results your impressions are, and whether anyone cares to click through from an impression to view the listing. I have more listings than impressions each day which is not surprising because I sell scarce and obscure items of interest to a small audience.
What I think is more important is the increase in both impressions and views when I am selling above my average rate, Success begats success and I find my views increase and my search placement improves when sales are up. (Obviously, I could be hallucinating as many sellers do when they see patterns on Ebay).

·8 months agoThere is also something to be said for the 'window display effect.' -Each viewable listing potentially begets more views, from buyers curious about what else you have for sale.

One of the first and most valuable tips I got here in the Community was from a wise regular, Mr. Lincoln. He looked and saw that my listings were well-made, I was doing everything conceivable to turn a view into a sale, but I probably wasn't getting many views because all my items were fairly 'meh,' nothing sensational. He advised me to try to get my hands on a few "showcase" items, things with lots of eye-appeal, considerably more desirable within my categories, and considerably more valuable .... but to then overprice them at least somewhat. The idea was to have those items lure people in with something they couldn't resist taking a closer look at, even if they couldn't afford it, but then they might take a look at my other items, and (still intoxicated with that 'me want' feeling) maybe buy something else they could afford.
It works for car dealerships and fashion stores, so why not here? Lol, my only problem is KEEPING the showcase items listed for very long; sometimes I can't afford to just keep letting them linger, have to lower the price at some point so somebody can buy them.

·8 months agoSeller A who has 1 item listed for sale vs. seller B who has 100 items listed for sale.
Which seller is more likely to receive more views?
On the other hand...
Seller A who has 1 listing for the latest Nike shoes vs. seller B who has 100 listings for dryer lint.
I would guess seller seller A would get more views than seller B.
It's as simple as that.
I don't think the algorithm has anything to do with it ... but people will disagree with me on that.

·8 months agoThere used to be an old mantra, and old ebay religious chant in all the ebay Facebook Groups for years and years that went like this.....
List List List List List List List.......
The more you List, THE MORE YOU SELL. Well, people would List List List List List their buttocks off to the point where their Living Room, their Guest Bedroom, their 2 Car Garage, the Shed outback was all PACKED with garbage they had LISTED on ebay. Were these same List List List List Listers making money money money money money? Majority of them were not. One Guy in Casey's Group had had enough, deleted 3000 Items in one swoop, and took 2 UHaul Trucks full of stuff to Goodwill. He got caught up in the List List List List mantra Casey's little sheeples pushed in that Group.
Nobody really knows what the algorithm is, OR if there really is one. Listing what Sells, what people Buy, is what gets Views AND Sales. You can List List List List Idget Gidgets all day long, but if no one is interested in those Idget Gidgets, then No, you will not be getting views, and/or sales no matter how much you List List List List........

·8 months ago@gurlcat I'm guessing it is a reference to Casey Pariss (sp?) , the "Rockstar Flipper" on YouTube. But that's just a guess. I imagine @hotwheelsbum will be along to make it clear.

·8 months ago@mackn_26 Well, I would take that statement to mean: the more items you are offering, the more views/sales you are likely to get. That's just numbers.
I suspect what you've ACTUALLY been hearing is: the more active YOU are----listing every day , revising listings, sending offers, etc----the better visibility ebay will give you. There is probably some truth to this---ebay has occasionally hinted at it---but I don't believe there's any magic number---1 new listing, 5, 10? Who knows?
So, sure, list more, but don't get tied up in knots over ebay's algo----they change it often enough that even if you did figure it out, it would probably change not long after...

I couldn't agree more even though I can't prove it.

·8 months agoI'd say it has to do with being active, not actually listing. Listing is just one activity, there's also selling and revising. You can take old stuff down and relist it with updated information (I use third party software so I saved all those listings, I take stuff down, change it on the third party software and relist it as new), so I can list list list, without having to buy buy buy new inventory.
Also it helps to clean out old stock and get rid of stale items. Since many of my items come from the B&M store where I work, stuff goes back to them if I can't sell. For instance having a series of some kind of a product and having it picked over through a few years of running listings, what's left will go back to the store if it won't sell for a price I'm happy with, then they deal with it. I imagine if you don't have a brick and mortar store to handle your left overs you could donate them. I have had numerous items I didn't want to be bothered with trying to sell and just donated them in some way shape or form to get rid of them.

·8 months agoMore items, more views...that has nothing to do with EBAY algorithm, just a numbers game.
If you pay EBAY to "promote listings" EBAY promises to make your "promoted item" available for viewing by a wider audience. There is no guarantee customer will "click and view your promoted item" or that will result in "more sales".
If you use "general ad campaign" you only pay "promoted fee" when your item sells. Promoted fee charged on "purchase price + shipping + sales tax". If you are shipping "heavy items" with high shipping costs "this can really eat into your profits".

yes, at least that's what I mean when I say it.

None of us know what the algorithm does.......and they "seem" to change the algorithm periodically so any assumption may not be permanently valid.
