The fees are very high
Summary: stephano-ca expressed frustration over high fees on eBay, noting a significant loss on a skateboard sale. Several participants responded with advice and insights. dhbookds suggested reviewing fees prior to selling, while mam98031 mentioned the transparency of the fee structure. tobaccocardyahoo pointed out that international sales can incur higher fees and duffy4444 analyzed the earnings, suggesting that the net return was reasonable. Some participants reminisced about simpler times on older eBay, expressing similar frustrations regarding costs on other platforms as well.
Hello, the fees are very high. I sold my skateboard at a loss—it sold for $165.91 with shipping paid by the buyer, yet I ended up with just $88.10, even though the base price was $115.00. The fees are really too high; I’m disappointed. We try to offer good prices to buyers, but it ends up meaning selling at a loss. I think I’m going to leave eBay; I miss the old eBay where everything was simpler.

·1 month agoDid you promote your listing? Fees plus shipping would account for about $100 of that. I am guessing you were promoting your listing which costs more.

·1 month ago · EditedYes, I agree! The old eBay was much simpler. Bring it back!
Let's see, that's what percentage on the first $25, then what percentage on the next $500? No, wait, its the next $1000. Those over $1000 sales are so easy to calculate! Now how much was the insertion fee? I forget, did I start it at $25 or $50??
Plus, we had the wonderful Paypal fee, I loved paying that too. How much was that on the entire transaction?
And, I only had to take one picture, that's all you could have on a listing. That made it so simple!

·1 month agoAs a general rule of thumb, eBay fees and related selling costs can amount to approximately 15–20% of the final selling price.

·1 month ago · EditedThe shipping and the taxes is essentially a wash because the buyer paid it. So forget using the $165.91 order total when calculating your net return. $165.91 is only the total that eBay uses to calculate your transaction fees of $26.40.
You've netted $88.10 on an item you listed and sold for $115.00. This is your base and the bottom line reality that you, the seller, should be concerned with when figuring your net profit and loss percentage on the sale.
That $88.10 is a 77% return on your $115.00 sale, which is a pretty good percentage on a sale that a lot of online sellers would die for! -- So what's your legitimate beef? I don't see where your excessive "loss" is.
Keep things in perspective of the real bottom line and from where you should be starting your profit calculation.
Cheers, Duffy

·1 month agoEbay's fees are competitive with other major internet marketplaces.
Fees on international sales are higher than domestic sales unless you have shipped with EIS
As a Canadian seller, selling to Canadians you are paying fees on a higher amount of taxes than we typically see in the US.

·1 month agoEbay is VERY transparent about their fees. The Selling fees [this link is for the Canadian fees] are published and relatively easy to follow. All sellers should review the selling fees for an item they want to sell so they can make sure they price it accordingly so they can make a profit. Ebay hasn't changed anything recently. This is something ALL sellers should know.

·1 month ago · EditedShipping is not a "fee".
It is a cost of doing business.
I pass my shipping costs on to my buyer.

·1 month agoUnfortunately, the fees are a fixed expense in your transactions here. You determine whether you make a profit or not, not eBay. Most sellers feel your pain. It is what it is. I wish you the best.

·1 month agoAlways a good idea to figure out the fees before you price/sell an item..........
