Tech glitch, sneaky marketing campaign or outside social media assist courtesy of eBay?
So, I have a question that I would like to ask of the many far more seasoned sellers out there.
Upon reviewing my orders page, I noticed a tiny header at the top of the page that reads:
"Congrats you made your first sale with ads Boost now (underlined)"
This is new and wasn't there a few short days ago.
I know for a fact as a matter of both principle and economics I do NOT ever spend additionally for promoted listings or additional advertisement on this platform at all.
So, the question, how could I have made a sale with an ad I never placed?
Furthermore, there are certainly no line items in any of my recent orders billing for ads/promotions.
My thought processes lead to only three possible conclusions:
A. It's a technical glitch and is not applicable (my least likely assumption)
B. It's an extremely dubious means by which to massage me into investing money in promoted listings/ads
C. I was the beneficiary of an eBay sponsored/subsidized ad (either on platform or social media)
Any thoughts on this would be most welcome as I am perplexed.

Is the banner kind of like this one? If it is, then it's really terrible word choice on a marketing banner; it's not alerting you to an ad fee on a sold item. I wouldn't worry about it unless you see ad fees appear on your payment transactions page.
I found this banner on the My eBay > Overview page for my forum posting ID which is not used for selling.

OP1 year agoYes, exactly like it (in wording, not font presentation).
Wasn't worried, just trying to determine whether it was a marketing technique to stimulate ad buys or an actual benefit from one of those eBay sponsored social media ads that I have been hearing about.

Was hoping that it was the latter reason. You are most probably correct on this one.
I am not sure of the reasoning with eBay on this one.
I commend your consideration in regarding this as a marketing attempt with a "terrible" word choice.
I would be more inclined to consider it well thought out and deliberate.
I am not a huge fan of extremely misleading sales techniques & this approach makes me much less likely to make an ad buy now or in the future.
I cannot imagine that this was focus-grouped. Crafted, yes.
Just one man's opinion.

·1 year agoYou're actually very close. Some time ago I was about to make a major electronic purchase. Off to the right under the price there was an eBay promo. Follows is an example of what I saw (although it is not the one I actually saw - that promo is over). But this is very much like it.
It is/was a promo run BY EBAY hoping to drum up business. I only had to pay the stated price LESS the discount BUT the buyer got the FULL price (less FVF of course)

·1 year agoI know you're going to take this wrong, but why are you complaining about ebay actually showing you useful information as to where the sale originated?
I would love to know if those google images generate any sales, or social media lstings....whether they influence my marketing is debatable, but I wish I knew the origins of EVERY sale.
Does something always need to be nefarious?
They have been adding some "useful" info lately.....

OP1 year agoI am not taking it wrong. Quite frankly, you are. You are assuming facts not in evidence.
If you read my opening to the thread, the info I supplied was 100% of the info I received.
I would LOVE to know where the sale originated. I would first like to know which sale it was.
None of that data is being furnished to me. It is a generic header at the top of My Orders page.
If it's A. A sales gimmick, I would like to know.
If it's B. An eBay provided social media ad that helped to generate a sale, I would LOVE to know which item it was. Perhaps that info might stimulate me to do what I never do which is pay for ads. Perhaps not.
If it's C. A tech glitch I would like to know that as well.
Nothing nefarious here. Just curious as to what was meant by the message I received.

I missed this...I thought it was applied to a specific item. You are spot on....the info does us no good in the manner it is being presented.

·1 year agoeBay can retroactively take fees from funds or sales if they are able to say something was sold with ads.
So it's an issue if, like me and OP we got the "you made a sale with ads" banner when we **bleep** well didn't pay for any ads.

OP1 year agoSure, I certainly wasn't thinking of an isolated incident.
Just not sure if it's a clever way to massage sellers into paying for ads/promos....or....
....this is revenue brought to the table by the recent social media selling/campaign?
I know that when I occasionally click on a major newsfeed or my PC cover screen, I see an ad for one of the items I have listed for sale & I know I did not pay additional revenue for any online ads.

·1 year agoIDK. I'd love to see a screen shot if you can post one. What's interesting is that I use ads on almost everything & I don't see any such verbiage on my Orders page, where I think you're saying this is, even though one of the items clearly did sell from a PL.

OP1 year agoAt the very top of the My Orders page in small but dark black font with a clickable "promote now" at the end of the sentence with which to link promoted ad listing buys.

·1 year agoOk, thanks, that is where I looked I think. It's not My Orders though, it's the SH>Orders screen. Unless you're using the old My Selling pages, in which case I think it was called 'My Orders' there. If you mean on Seller Hub, it's just called Orders & it defaults to the current unfulfilled orders. Assuming that's what you mean, I do NOT have it, which makes sense b/c I promote virtually everything, so I would conclude that it is eBay trying to promote the using.

OP1 year agoAlso, to further support my assertion, every single one of my current listings is available for promotion.
Not currently being promoted and annoyingly every listing constantly bears the header attempting to massage me into promoting.

As I had indicated in my opening to the thread, my line-item billing for each sale has no fees charged for ads.
