Tax Day for Those 1099k are Due Tomorrow
I had a feeling there be no sales today(as of yet) because taxes are due tomorrow.
I ponder and thought...we owe Uncle Sam and I will make my way to mail my check to him today.
I think of all the people who will be mailing out checks to Uncle Sam today and tomorrow.
Could there be hundreds or thousands? I have no idea.
And here's the kicker....we don't use any type of tracking to send a check to Uncle Sam...I owe a few hundred dollars.
And yet...some sellers will use ESE tracking to send a trading card that maybe was bought for 2 bucks.
I realize not everyone owes and some get a refund but I think it is just funny that someone wishes there be tracking on an item under $20. bucks.

Historically, more than two-thirds of tax returns are filed and processed by the first week or April.

·1 year agoTracking isn't necessary because the IRS is not going to receive a check, intentionally never cash it and intentionally claim it was never sent. The IRS also can't revoke your Top Rated Seller status and the benefits that come with it. The IRS is also not going to nag people for tracking numbers the second the taxes are e-filed.
If I had to send the IRS or anyone else a very large amount of money via check I'd send it registered mail, tracked with a signature and return receipt.

·1 year agoI mailed my tax return on April 7th, they cash the cheque on April 10th, they assessed my return on April 14th and asked me for another $86 today (due to a calculation error, that's no big surprise having self employment income and work income in Canada is complicated and making mistakes is inevitable). I'm not mailing the cheque for $86 with tracking since I'll know if they cashed it (and I filed on time, so the worst that happens is they assess interest).

·1 year agoTaxes are due today! Unless you live in Southern CA. They have a 6 month extension, until Oct. 15, due to the wildfires. (My daughter lives in Los Angeles).

I've filed electronically since it became a thing many years ago. I can barely remember the days of sending in a paper return. You are correct... it is flawless. The last few years I sent in my payment on the IRS website. You can use a cc (small fee) ... or make a direct payment (free) from your bank acct. ... which is what I did. As they say, easy peasy. I got an immediate email with a confirmation # ... and within a day, the payment cleared my bank account. No worrying /wondering if the payment got there.

I suspect that there are hundreds of millions of Americans who are terrified that the gummint is going to spy on them if they file electronically.
You know, because the USG has nothing better to do. 😄

·1 year agoFor the last dozen years I have just sent everything in to the IRS electronically. Works flawlessly.
You get a text letting you know that your payment (ACH transfer) has been received and processed.
Is that an option for folks here?

·1 year agoIt is completely an option - it's the same no matter what work one does. It's just that some people are really uncomfortable with that, or their computer expertise doesn't stretch to it, or whatever.
I remember the days when the IRS CHARGED you for filing online - $15...for saving them hassle. 🙄
Overhauling my retirement portfolio, I cashed in a couple of accounts to roll over. Two of them sent me paper checks in the mail. ::head desk::
ETA: Or the gummint spy thing, yes.

·1 year agoI did the same roll-over with one of my savings accounts. BoA would only process a paper check. That was a couple years ago.
But I understand the thinking. USG retirement applications are to this day handled in paper form and processed, and archived, in an old limestone mine in Pennsylvania.
I find something about that very reassuring... sometimes it's vital to retain manual control over certain life-cycle changes.

As for taxes, file electronically and have the money withdrawn from your account. Easy Peasy

"eBay buyers are not affected income tax for the year 2024. = buying goes on as usual - unless the are a procrastinating combo buyer/seller.
Some sellers might not meet their stated 1 day or same day handling times as they scurry to finalize their income tax forms and get them in the mail before midnight tonight. Procrastination is not a fun game. But here is a musical about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi3aEGo8y-E

What a pain in the butt but what a relief getting it done.

·1 year agoThere was a line of old people waiting for my PO to open when I dropped off packages this morning. I expect scans will be backed up a day or two because of this.

·1 year agoMy tax return isn't due until April 30, but I sent it off with tracking (by express mail to make sure there's no accusation about getting it in late... they charge 10% of what you owe as a "fine" if you're late in Canada, for me that's $150, and I hate wasting money).
When you send a cheque though you know they have it, they deposit the cheque the day your tax return arrives.

·1 year agoWhat is this "mailing" you speak of? We file ours online. No tax refund - I don't believe in giving Uncle Sam money that I can invest better myself.
Is "slamming" the same as merely investing?

·1 year agoI have complicated taxes, three T2125 forms, and I'm not sure how to file all three online with the appropriate deductions on each (mixing them will reduce what I can deduct). Seems easier to do it on the computer, print it, and mail it by Express (with the cheque).

·1 year agoOur taxes are complex, too, but it's mostly about sending checks through the mail (I don't even use checks but the DH still does). Particularly with the current chaos in this country, it just seems too insecure (sending via Express is a good idea - I'd say anyone using the snail mail method of filing should do something like that).

·1 year agoTBH, I wanted them to cash the cheque very fast and balance my chequebook.
But I'm a little bit of a technophobe when it comes to change, so I don't like the idea of filing online. Some day I will be forced to change, CRA (Revenue Canada) is trying to get everyone to change to some electronic filing method.

We file online or my tax guy does but it was my reselling net that put us over the cliff so I paid the IRS. I love the way you write cheque makes it sound so elegant ( when it's not, yuk burns my bum!!!)

·1 year agoI had to pay tax too because of online selling (it kind of couldn't be avoided) but thanks to all sorts of deductions we get with Revenue Canada, it lowered my taxable income quite a bit so my tax payment wasn't too much.
Check is a Canadian word too (but when you say "check" you mean "check the check engine light" if you're in Canada). The cheque is the money one (and it's elegant to be on the receiving end of those).

·1 year agoI sent off my 1st quarter taxes to him today, I had all my paperwork done and waiting on ebay end of Jan., drop it off with accountant, he had it all done and even got a couple hundred back from last year by middle of Feb.

·1 year agoDid mine a long time ago, got the return, slammed the return into my 2025 IRA, which actually ended up being a bad idea seeing as how poorly the market has done since then.

I understand what your saying, made me a tad nervous writing a physical check out and mailing it.
I just transfered the amount into my checking account used for ebay and PP and wrote a check from there. When I seen it had been cashed ( rather quickly) I called the CU and they told me who cashed it ( US treasury) Whew! They don't sit on payment checks long, they cash those puppies now!!

But, you can! You can always send your tax payment by Registered Mail with Return Receipt Requested.
Sure, it will cost you a couple dollars more, but you will receive a signed card with a signature from the IRS-person who accepted the mail-piece from the Post Office.
Same for our California Franchise Tax Board if you owe them money, too.

·1 year agoJust heard on the radio to be careful driving tomorrow due to increased accidents on tax day!!
Be safe everyone.

·1 year agoWhy are there "increased accidents on tax day"? People in a hurry to get to the PO to mail their tax return?
Try H&R block. Filed on March 20, refund check in my bank account on the 28th.

OP1 year agoH & R Block did our taxes again...I live 2 blocks from them...Hurray!
But we owe this year...so we had to send a check.
We usually break even every year.
But my wife got put on jury duty this year...Our city pays $100.+ incidentals every day you are on it.
And she did I think 3 elections as a volunteer which you get paid.
I never do our taxes with all these plus my 1099k with deductions and such.
Yes, our post office had a line today...not many people have a stamp lying around these days to mail taxes to Uncle Sam and the state(for some).

Only caught the tail end of the report, but it seemed that more stress and anxiety which creates distraction due to filing of taxes creates the increase of car accidents, on and around April 15th.
I'm not sure if they meant only here in Southern California or across the country.
