Talk about your choice not to use your Selling I.D.
I've known for years that it would be wiser to use my Buyer account here in the forums, and I probably should have started doing so years ago. To my knowledge it hasn't bitten me in the butt, yet, but .... how could I know it hasn't, or won't ever? I can't.
But at this point it would feel so weird to start using it. I'd be this cocky newbie with a 2-digit feedback and no sales history, but talking like someone who's been here for years, and surely get some major side-eye as such. Maybe one or more regulars would eventually recognize me, and maybe I'd be glad of that, to feel 'known' again. But maybe not, and maybe I'd gradually have a full-on personality compartmentalization. Maybe the gurlcat me would continue to chime in now and then, maybe even in the same threads as __________ me, maybe they'd start liking each other's posts, oof maybe they'd start arguing.
OMG maybe ___________ would eventually manifest in flesh & blood, 'Dark Half' style, break into my house, destroy all gurlcat's wurld selling inventory (actually some of it I kinda wish she would destroy, so I could just stop putting off deciding if it's inventory or donation fodder, but I digress), and maybe she'd strangle me in my sleep !!!
So I'm curious, those who use your non-seller I.D., was that your choice from the start or did you switch-over at some point? How long ago? Was it weird? Do you still post with 2 or more I.D.'s? What are they? Don't worry, I won't tell anybody and I'm sure nobody else in this thread will either. It'll be our little secret.

·4 months agoYou just basically described the origins of Dragon Ball Z characters Kame and Piccolo or Majin Buu and Evil Buu. Even so, Evil Buu ended up consuming Majin Buu (good) to transform into the far more dangerous Super Buu (Evil Buu's conscience in the driver seat). 😀
As for why I have this account, my cat stepped on the keyboard and accidentally created it. 😺
If I recall correctly, I switched because I was using a different device and travelling or something and couldn't retrieve my primary pw. I have a bunch of devices that access my accounts and I was too lazy to change the pw's for all of those if I chose to reset. So I just created an account on the spot and have been using that ever since. As for people who turn their noses at me for having a low feedback; either I don't care, I don't notice the reply, or agree with them that I was spewing nonsense.
Do you still post with 2 or more I.D.'s? For all you know, I could be posting with 10+ ID's. Perhaps 20+ replies to this thread is just me with my many many accounts arguing with myself.

·4 months agoI can be a little absent-minded - I'd be posting with my seller ID, buying with my posting ID, trying to sell on my buying ID. The path of least resistance (not to mention the flogging portion of it). I'll just say what I have to say under my regular account ID.
gurlcat
OP4 months ago@chapeau-noir I'm pretty sure I would not only mess up but in some spectacularly embarrassing way.

·4 months agoI do not recall reading any discussion about a Community member retaliating against another community member because they got offended by a comment on these boards. By retaliating, I mean making a purchase solely for the purpose of leaving a negative feedback comment as payback. I'm not saying it has never happened, just that I've never read a testimonial about it.
I have read two discussions this year about non discussion board retaliation. Seller A uses one ID for both selling and buying. They left a negative for seller B. Seller B then purchases the lowest priced item from seller A solely to retaliate with a negative. The takeaway is that neglecting to add to your BBL enables retaliation.
I use one ID for selling, buying and posting. I am unwilling to used multiple computers, multiple browsers or sign in/out of multiple accounts.

·4 months agoI think that's probably the easiest way to deal with things. I have at least a half dozen posters from this board blocked, and they are exactly the people you'd guess I wouldn't want to do business with.
I know myself pretty well and it's almost guaranteed that I'd end up posting with my "real" ID by accident if I used multiple IDs. I keep this tab open while I work, kind of the way you'd keep your office door open to chat with colleagues/coworkers while you tend to your tasks at your own desk. Changing IDs would be the equivalent of leaving my office to meet with all of you in the conference room. I'm too lazy to do that.
gurlcat
OP4 months ago@onlinecentral I think the likelihood of of reading a testimonial would be minuscule compared to the likelihood of it happening. First of all the retaliator would have to use THEIR same I.D. as they were using when they got offended. Then the retaliate-ee would have to recognize that name and remember why they recognize it. Then they'd have to decide to post about it here, which they may be too embarrassed or scared to do. But if they did and the said the retaliator's name, it would have gotten removed for naming and shaming, in fact I wouldn't put it past a mod to remove the post entirely.
I've put tons of forum hot-heads' names in my BBL, but chances are those weren't their only i.d.'s, and if they wanted to do something to me they'd probably use another one just to avoid being reported to eBay.

·4 months agoOut of several id's I just settled on this one, an occasional buying id. I can't say it was a conscious decision.
It was much later before I read on the forum that using a selling id might not be a good idea.
It really was pot luck that I ended up using this one. eBay, at the time, was running some special offers for buyers so I rotated a number of buying id's to make the most of it. When the offers ended I just happened to post on the UK forum with the one I was currently using and I've stuck with it for posting.

·4 months agoIt's my understanding that there are many people here who have a selling ID, a buying ID and a posting ID.
Many years ago, I sold on eBay. Now I only buy and I post with the same ID. Evidently it's suspicious that I won't use or reveal my former selling ID.
So be it.

What an interesting brain you have. Personally, I would rather try and diffuse a war of words than contribute to it, so using my selling ID is no big deal. Besides, I'm retiring soon and would rather exit in style than get pushed out the door. 😉

·4 months agoYou could pick a name that is close to your seller account so that the regulars here know its you. At the same time anyone who doesn't know you won't be able to trace it back to your seller account. Not foolproof, but would make just a little more difficult to retaliate.
itsjustasprain
·4 months agoSure. I use my selling account for routine answers or conversation or problem solving ect. I use my buying account for everything else - mainly in threads where the OP is already overheated and otherwise may not take answers well if they are not what he wants to hear.
I know Ebay is touchy about linking problematic accounts with any others shared so I keep my buying and selling accounts very well separated just in case.

If you don't mind losing your forum status and rank, I'd say go for it. Most people around here judge you on the quality of your replies anyway. I personally use my selling ID, I do have a separate buyer ID that I use sometimes to buy, but I don't use it on the forums. As for the chances of someone retaliating? I really don't know, and honestly, I don't worry about it.

·4 months agoI use to have in my signature something to the effect of "This is just my buying/posting ID. My seller ID has over 50,000 feedbacks and is Top Rated.
It was mainly just because posters would say Why would I take advice from you when it shows you have never sold anything?
soh.maryl
·4 months agoUsed to get that remark a lot: "Why would I take advice from someone who's never sold?" Hey, it doesn't matter to me at all where you get your advice. Most of the responders here, regardless of status, are very smart and experienced. Their advice often comes from similar situations where they have learned a valuable lesson the hard way and are trying to save you from that.

OP4 months agoSame here. And that's WITH knowledge that the bleeped-off person could do awful things to me as a seller. Now that I think about it, how big of a monster would I be without fear?

·4 months agoPffft! As if the weirdness would last even a week. I for one would welcome our new fearless monster overlord, and the trail of utter fun that would be left in her wake. 😂
Reading your OP conjured all sorts of very entertaining could-be posts in my mind....

·4 months agoMy husband starting selling on eBay about 3 years before we met and had a very good selling career and loyal customer base. I sometimes may say things on the eBay boards that could be upsetting and didn't want to risk some angry person from the boards buying from us and messing up my husbands stellar feedback.

·4 months agoThe ID I sell on isn’t mine, it’s the account of the company I work for, so not only did I decide I shouldn’t be posting here as their official account, but I couldn’t get notifications because they went to the company owner’s email. Just all around worked better to set up a posting account, which also has Team Access set up to that company account.
gurlcat
OP4 months ago@jonathanbrightlight Wait wait wait, so are you saying on any given day, one of your coworkers could write posts as 'jonathanbrightlight'? Mercy, that's a whole other Stephen King story.
Now I think I remember there being an account here ..... for a while(?) ... where it was a husband and wife, and you never knew which one was writing.
jonathanbrightlight
·4 months agoNo, other way around, the account I use for selling any of my coworkers can log into, but this one is mine only. I have access to limited functions of that account while logged into this one, but not the other way around.

People can get pretty nasty with each other here.
I don't use my selling ID.
Who cares if people think I look like newbie?
I'm here to gather information.
Could you just make a posting ID, or does it have to be an actual eBay account?
chapeau-noir
·4 months agoEach ID, no matter what it's for, is a separate account with a separate email.
gurlcat
OP4 months agoWell I should have been clearer about this in my post instead of trying to be funny. When I said "newbie" I meant it mainly in the sense of 'new to the forums' not so much 'new to eBay'. Like even without any selling activity in adamcartwright's account, you're a regular known by regulars. We have a sense of your personality, know some of your stories, etc. But imagine if you had a 3rd i.d. and how weird it would feel to start posting with THAT.
adamcartwright
·4 months ago@gurlcat
With a 3rd ID, I could invent a whole new me.
gurlcat
OP4 months ago😮That's the kind of endeavor I find very alluring but could never pull off. I think I do a pretty good 'peabrain troll' in Reddit and Youtube comment threads once in a while, but only if I keep it short like one "sentence" (in quotes because peabrain trolls don't really write in sentences). Any more than that, and my good and bad writing habits would surely surface.

·4 months agoUsed my primary account here on the boards for about 10 years (up until the end of the Powerseller Board where you had to use a Powerseller account to post on that board.
When that went away (and at a time when the boards were a lot more brutal than they are now) I switched to a posting ID.
When I switched I got the usual "you are not a seller, what would you know" comments. Those come from people who seem to think that you have to be a long time experienced seller to know anything.
There are many sellers who come to this board that have tons of feedback but still don't know the basics. Like just finding out that eBay charges fees on shipping even though they have been paying them for 15 years.
I do wish that sellers who come here with a question about a problem would use their selling ID. It's hard to be helpful when you can't see the users account and the sellers doesn't presents a vague issue that we can only guess at the issue.

·4 months agoLOL I was actually just thinking about this, wondering if the bracelet lady might have been a poster/visitor.
I've considered using my dusty old buying ID, but I like being able to get input on this account and its listings/items/sales. When I see a poster with no listings or feedback make some authoritative statement, I don't discount it out of hand but I do wonder if the person is actually walking their talk, or even just has the experience to weigh in on things with any kind of insight.
If I say something, even if it's wrong, anyone here can look at my claims (sales are up, sales are down, you can make enough to live on, etc.) and weigh it against actual evidence. I also think about the minor drubbing I got when I first started posting a couple years ago, and the number of times I've had to defend myself from "noob" abuse despite having been here since the last millenium. I can't be bothered to go through all that silliness again. If I say something stupid now, people know it's just because I'm stupid, not because I'm inexperienced.
