Strikethrough pricing
How much of an advantage do you think strikethrough pricing has over the traditional pricing these days?
I'm referring to having for example a price of right next to a $10 compared to just pricing at $10.

As a buyer wanting to buy five of your items and just ONE of those with the strikethrough is included in my cart, I will NOT be allowed to request a total for the lot. I use a computer so the "request total" button is there, and I can click on it, but I will get an error message somewhat along the lines of this:
You can't request combined shipping because the seller has already offered a discount
If traditional pricing is used, I can commit to buy all of them and will pay the invoice as soon as it arrives.
A similar error message will appear if only ONE of the five has free shipping (there are others reasons as well). I do realize that many sellers are not interested in selling multiple items to the same buyer, but in case you are not one of them, I just thought I would point out that aspect.

·2 years agoWe've sold a number of older items with strikethrough pricing, but whether it's truly better than simply lowering the price if it doesn't sell is something I can't determine. That said, it's far easier to set up percentage based discounts on a hundred items at once, than to go in and manually revise prices down.

OP2 years agoThat's true if you are using the strikethrough discounts as they were intended to be used. But if used as a marketing strategy, it won't matter as much because you really aren't going to be dropping prices.

·2 years agoStrikethrough pricing on items which are "blind items" is worthless. It may be effective for branded items from a known manufacturer IF it is less than street price.

·2 years agoSale pricing can spark the interest of items with watchers. They may end up buying. Lower pricing can get it sold fast if it's the initial price.

·2 years agoThat advertising gimmick tells me two things. The item was overpriced to begin with and / or the seller raised the price then used the strike through to imply a false savings off the inflated price.
Reminds me of a small furniture store in my area that promoted a going out of business sale for many years. A local mattress company did the same thing for over 10 years. Both eventually were cited for an array of fraud charges.

OP2 years agoCorrect. So I wonder what advantage does strikethrough have among the masses these days.

A shop in the same mall as us once covered all their windows with brown paper with signs saying "Everything in Store FOR SALE!"

OP2 years agoLike in the movie You Don't Mess with the Zohan there was an electronics store named "Going Out of Business"
